actually u people r not found of knowing any thing abt islamic history, and will know when enieme of Rasool Allah had broke his one teeth during Gazwa and Rasool Sahabi who was not in Gazwa but heard his news about Rasool Allah injuries so his himslef brooken down his whole teeths in following of Rasool pain.
the idea of dripping blood with chain is an ancient practice which should be stopped. ths shia religion forbids such actions however much of whats left is strictly cultural. shia nations such as iran and bahrain outlaw this practice because its not right. however the remembrance of Imam Ali a.s will always go on. and the story of the ahl al bait will never die down.
my friend is Shia. If you honestly want to know I can ask him. I think that the Imam was related to Mohammed and was killed by someone so this day is observed to remember his death. I think that they hit themselves observing how Hazrat Ali was killed. I don't know for sure - but this is what I remember without googling or asking my friend.
