When I first began playing, I tried to save money by buying a digital amp, line 6 spider 3, 75 watt, do you think I could at least achieve this tone with that amp? I feel so stupid "investing" in that amp haha.. Help?
@JrOsS696 Yes, it is possible but hard to do. VERY hard to do. I would recommend a Fender pro Junior or a solid state fender or Marshall. Either way, TUBES is really the only way you'll get close to any legends tone. (Usually)
It's actually not bad. There are some hints of SRV but one thing we should understand, to cop a tone, it should flow through you like the air you breath ..Still you will not be that person but you will def/ live in the moment ...
get yourself some pu's from early to mid 70's.Their reasonably priced and pretty close to the 60's in qaulity. Then u need a ts that's modded to original specs, the new ones don't cut it.
I think most people miss his tone because they think loud and crunchy. He used nickel rocker strings, they have a sweeter tone and not harsh and brittle like most of the Stevie wanna be wankers.
distorted bridge for pride and joy? is this guy kidding me? for SRV tone all you need is a mid to high end fender valve, a vintage 'styled' strat or even an SRV strat and there's the closest you're gonna get without SRV's hands
Why did they use an Keeley Tubescreamer? There was no Keeley when SRV used the tubescreamers (he first used a 808, then 9, then the 10). Also the gain on the TS-808 in this video was to high. SRV would set the level very high to push the amp, the gain was low.
Not sure what the mystery is behind this tone. Push the front of a loud, clean Fender amp with a Screamer, plug into a Strat, and bend, push down, and play twice as hard as you normally would.
Practice all those , learn your trills, perfect your pull offs, and go from there.
start off playing hendrix for easier stuff like purple haze or crosstown traffic and move up to some SRV but don't just practice songs, see what signiture licks they do practice them and put them into your play style.
you have the perfect tone man, i have a peavey classic fiftey and it looks just like the 59' bassman, would it get me the same tone as the bassman in this video?
WHEN STEVIE RAY DIED, HE TOOK HIS FINGERS WITH HIM TO THE GRAVE - THAT IS WHERE THE TONE REALLY WAS!
I AM GLAD I COULD HELP CLEAR THAT UP FOR YOU, YOUR BILL WILL BE IN THE MAIL, KEEP WAILING, KEEP JAMMING, AND KEEP YOUR DAMN GERMS TO YOURSELF, I BID YOU A DOO-DOO!
@kentekent .13's-.56's or .58's I believe. He really used hybrid sets though, because later on Rene Martinez had him switch his high E string to an .11 to save his fingers.
For you guys criticizing him, watch the whole thing! He acknowledges strings and digging in hard - and also admits that overall this is a step in the right direction, not the complete picture.
Stevie Ray created a sound that has gone onto be probably the most copied tone out of blues and rock soloists. Also his playing style rubbed off onto the millions of players who idolized his tone, such as the guy giving this demo.
But the lesson lost is that the sound was in his fingers. Vaughan could have taken any set up and made it sound that good, he had a signature.
Not bad, but there' quite a lot of details missing here. I find the 3 BIG things that most people never pay enough attention to when it comes to getting his tone is
@MEX0688 No I have a Mexican Tele which doesnt do it. My Ibanez SZ Prestige does a decent job. I havent found a Strat that has a good feel. I use to own a 60"s reissue but sold it because I needed money to put toward my wedding. My wife bought me a jem which is an awesome guitar but it isnt for that sound. If I drop the pick and pluck the strings on my SZ I guess it does ok.
@Beers782 Ok I see... I would recommend a TS-9 (DX) do the trick as in the video. A nice well rounded strat does a great job. I have a 2010 mex strat and I love the feel. Another guitar that I liked that worked really well with a nice blues sound was the Thin Line Tele, and it worked even better with the blues reissue amp. I just love the sound that it makes. I would recommend, also, spend hours, if needed, at guitar center and look for your tone on that amp and guitar combo.
Does anyone know what settings the Gain/Level/Tone knobs need to be on the TS to get Stevie's tone? I just received the TS9 today from Keeley and messed with it for about 2 hours, but I still couldn't get his tone. I'm using a tube amp (Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 401 Combo). Anyone have any suggestions where the controls should be? I know I'll never sound exactly like SRV, but I'd like to be able to emulate his sound somewhat. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks and peace!
@jkretch72 the overdrive should be low and the tone should be about centered, but the output should be way up. that way it really sounds overdriven without sounding like a crappy distorted metal kind of thing.
He's using one that was modified by Keeley Electronics. They switch out the original LED with their signature "Blue". If you look at closely at the pedal @ 2:14, you can see the blue "Keeley" label.

@PIlotrcm mex strat plus tex specials...here I come - woohoo...now if you tell me I can tear open an old radio fit it with even older oven knobs and plug it in to a speaker bought at a church sale for a hymn and a prayer to make the same sound as a Fender Blues Deluxe amp I'll be impressed...ha ha ha
You can do that too! Just check out Mojo amps! But guitar wiring isnt to hard I highly highly recomend everyone learn to use a soldering iron and practice!! Its way more fun than just playing on it's own!
@1Ma9iN8tive Actually he's right. There's a lot of morons that buy into the whole "gotta have it" philosophy. Its like these people that buy signature model guitars in hopes to sound just like the artist they're trying to imitate. You can in fact buy a mexican stat, upgrade the electronics slightly(might cost you $200) and get the same sound you would from a guitar costing four times as much. Don't believe me? Go to a guitar store and do an A/B test with tex specials.
@Danklin24 Actually...I know he is...an actually I'm gonna go and build a few of my own guitars and see what I can create...who knows a bit of fishing line and some nice wood I might just build me a monster Strat from "Oh my God That Strat Is A Monster"...ha ha ha
@PIlotrcm And don't forget your picks! And did you notice that he was using a Kelley Modded Tubescreamer? Because Stevie did not use Keeley stuff. Not that Keeley is bad, but he used stock Tubescreamers.
Will a TS9 cut the mustard or close enough to get a good SRV Tone? I have a Peavey Classic 50 212 so I would think it would do the same thing and push the amp the same. Any input? or can you just do a demo for us?
@ClupeGuitar Either way, the tube screamer is what you're hearing. Why make it personal? Judging by your profile, you're just a fucking prick who likes to post petty comments. Grow up and have an intelligent, mature conversation. You should get a fucking life, pathetic cock sucker.
If anyone cares... the tube screamer SRV used most was an original Ibanez TS-10... and back in those day "Maxon" made the inside guts of the ts'10's... so if you want a ts10 without paying 400 on ebay buy the maxon od808 for 150 new as it is the original ibanez ts-10
not only did he use 13's and tune down, he also used two to three different amps at the same time with different set up's. I don't think anyone will ever truely achieve Stevie's tone no matter how hard they try. Although I have to say that Fender made a guitar called the Toronado (I think that's right) that came pretty darn close.
Another few things to note are that steevie had huge fingers ,used jumbo frets on his guitars , overwound single coils , and the lefty tremelo. But I think the tone is mainly down to the fingers , people say srv sounds symilar to Hendrix but Hendrix had .900 guage strings , small frets and used the amps overdrive rather the an overdrive unit , but Hendrix did also have large finger tips , so I think the tone must lie in the fingers and the way the hands are placed on the neck
@13Musicmachine yes fingers has something to do with it. billy gibbons has one of the best tones ever and that man doesn't have huge fingers. it's the way the notes are played and phrasing. but gear does play a large part. especially since srv used .13 gauge strings tuned down to Eb.
Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo Great White Buffalo
Here is another comment from me on this video. This is what I think the secrets to his tone is. Ts-808 tube screamer, dumble steel string singer amp head, fender amp cabinet, really heavy stings, 60s' strat, big frets, and LOTS of soul.
@dmak111 by the way, I almost forgot. F sharp is between F and G. The note I think u meant would either be E sharp or F flat. Which to my knowledge neither of those notes exist.
@dmak111 I think u have just confused yourself slightly. E flat tuning is a semi-tone below E tuning. Where a whole step down would be D. There are no flat or sharp notes between E and F, or B and C. But there are between D and E. Which would be E flat. I hope I didn't confuse you if u are new to guitar. But I think if you read it a of time u will understand.
he said SRV played in the E Flat key. so according to music theory that i'm trying to learn, that key could also be the F sharp key? but i also thought there was no sharps of flats between E & F
@dmak111 Almost. It'd actually be D Sharp key. D# and Eb are enharmonic equivalents. And to elcottonball, there is an E# or B#. They're enharmonically equivalent to F and C, respectively. For musical annotation purposes, it makes sense. In an A# major scale, the notes would be A#, B# (C), C## (D), D#, E# (F), F## (G), G## (A), and returns to A#. Of course this would be cumbersome in practice, so we refer to that as a Bb scale (Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb). Much easier, but same scale sonically.
@TheFranMan ok so technically there can be sharps or flats b/w E and F. i think its funny how its perfectly sound in music theory that F# and G or A# and Gb are the same note but can come from different scales, yet they're still both the exact same note. thanks for clearing that up
@dmak111 Well there aren't actual notes between E and F. But F can be written as E#, just as E can be written Fb.
And technically, there are tones between E and F. But Western music really doesn't use these semitones. Those are more prevalent in world music (India, etc.). But basically for our purposes we'd never practically use a semitone (or quarter bend as ghost6392) aside from just making a slight change in sound to a note.
@dmak111 yes you r correct but if you bend that f# between a half step down, not the E note, like a quater step down(E flat) that should give you that E flat note. and if you apply that to any string especially in the 1st 5 frets it gives you a very bluesy type sound with the quater bend. especially when you apply the quater bend to a note followed by a pull off, it sounds beautiful.
how about coming up with your own sound, I think the world has heard more srv and hendrix impressions than it can bear. would be nice to see guitarists do something original for a change and not have to listen to the same ole licks and sound over and over and over and over and over and over and over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please oh lord ! let someone come up with somthing new. So with that, everyone have a nice day. Peace........

I would consider strings a part of your gear.

@PRSguy94 Don't forget a guitar cable...without that .....you got just an amp and a guitar
PIlotrcm 1 year ago
@PIlotrcm And don't forget your picks! And did you notice that he was using a Kelley Modded Tubescreamer? Because Stevie did not use Keeley stuff. Not that Keeley is bad, but he used stock Tubescreamers.

Man, Clay Aiken sure can play!

Will a TS9 cut the mustard or close enough to get a good SRV Tone? I have a Peavey Classic 50 212 so I would think it would do the same thing and push the amp the same. Any input? or can you just do a demo for us?

I'm pretty sure Stevie didn't use a keeley modified Tube Screamer. And i would classify strings as a part of the gear.

U showed neck without ts9 then bridge with ts9, u changed 2 variables...thats not a good comparison

@ClupeGuitar Either way, the tube screamer is what you're hearing. Why make it personal? Judging by your profile, you're just a fucking prick who likes to post petty comments. Grow up and have an intelligent, mature conversation. You should get a fucking life, pathetic cock sucker.

@55centerstage he used a ts808,ts9 and ts10.
xxxtrndamncellws 1 year ago
If anyone cares... the tube screamer SRV used most was an original Ibanez TS-10... and back in those day "Maxon" made the inside guts of the ts'10's... so if you want a ts10 without paying 400 on ebay buy the maxon od808 for 150 new as it is the original ibanez ts-10

Shelbones01 1 year ago
not only did he use 13's and tune down, he also used two to three different amps at the same time with different set up's.

13Musicmachine 1 year ago
@13Musicmachine yes fingers has something to do with it. billy gibbons has one of the best tones ever and that man doesn't have huge fingers. it's the way the notes are played and phrasing. but gear does play a large part. especially since srv used .13 gauge strings tuned down to Eb.

Here is another comment from me on this video. This is what I think the secrets to his tone is. Ts-808 tube screamer, dumble steel string singer amp head, fender amp cabinet, really heavy stings, 60s' strat, big frets, and LOTS of soul.
elcottonball 1 year ago
@dmak111 by the way, I almost forgot. F sharp is between F and G. The note I think u meant would either be E sharp or F flat. Which to my knowledge neither of those notes exist.
elcottonball 1 year ago
@dmak111 I think u have just confused yourself slightly. E flat tuning is a semi-tone below E tuning. Where a whole step down would be D. There are no flat or sharp notes between E and F, or B and C. But there are between D and E. Which would be E flat. I hope I didn't confuse you if u are new to guitar. But I think if you read it a of time u will understand.
elcottonball 1 year ago
he said SRV played in the E Flat key. so according to music theory that i'm trying to learn, that key could also be the F sharp key? but i also thought there was no sharps of flats between E & F
dmak111 1 year ago
TheFranMan 1 year ago
@TheFranMan ok so technically there can be sharps or flats b/w E and F. i think its funny how its perfectly sound in music theory that F# and G or A# and Gb are the same note but can come from different scales, yet they're still both the exact same note. thanks for clearing that up
dmak111 1 year ago
@dmak111 Well there aren't actual notes between E and F. But F can be written as E#, just as E can be written Fb.
And technically, there are tones between E and F. But Western music really doesn't use these semitones. Those are more prevalent in world music (India, etc.). But basically for our purposes we'd never practically use a semitone (or quarter bend as ghost6392) aside from just making a slight change in sound to a note.
TheFranMan 1 year ago
@dmak111 yes you r correct but if you bend that f# between a half step down, not the E note, like a quater step down(E flat) that should give you that E flat note. and if you apply that to any string especially in the 1st 5 frets it gives you a very bluesy type sound with the quater bend. especially when you apply the quater bend to a note followed by a pull off, it sounds beautiful.

it sounds great, but i hate the color of that guitar

how about coming up with your own sound, I think the world has heard more srv and hendrix impressions than it can bear. would be nice to see guitarists do something original for a change and not have to listen to the same ole licks and sound over and over and over and over and over and over and over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please oh lord ! let someone come up with somthing new. So with that, everyone have a nice day. Peace........
