I listen to a wide, super wide arrange of music but ELO Time has been stuck in my head for the last 30 some old years and never left, listen to the lyrics, they called it out.
@jamesterc ME TOO! I Have older sisters who played ELO all the time- and time and again I go Back to those classics. Sooo underrated! Face The Music, Eldorado, New World Record, Out of the Blue, Discovery, Time.... Fantastic.
I find nothing wrong with this track...I've grown up listening to ELO and I think ELO brought on alot of Great Tunes with their own Robotoc Sounds and I think that's what made ELO who they were!!! Seriously folks Everyone has their distinguish stylings in music and ELO is one of them...Please Give your Head a shake!!!
@bbhrupp Stick to your convictions about music. When I was your age, I liked David Bowie and I got razed about it all the time. And Look how popular he turned out to be. I'm 53 now. And Still enjoy Bowie, ELO.... Don't ever let friends try to influence your musical tastes. If you enjoy it, that's all that matters!!
I saw them in concert in Milwaukee, WI. My friend and I were having a bite and the band came down. i couldn't believe it, but we were to chicken to ask for an autograph. It made the concert so special to me.
I was a 7 year old kid in 1982 when I first heard this. It was played for me by my older brother. I asked him who did this and he said "ELO" I never forgot this song. I tried for 27 years to find it. All I could remember was the beginnings lyrics. I typed it in one night and the lyrics came up. I came here, found it and since have been addicted. This song and concept album showed the world ELO was way before there time and that Jeff Lynne is a cosmic genius.
@DoubleVisionandco I'm 8 yrs older than you, and can still remember the first time I heard ELO. They were on a music awards show and they did, "livin thing". I asked my sister what the name of the group was, and I became a fan, and have been one ever since.
The who were a STRONG influence on ELO...and it went both ways. Although quite different in their approach, sound, and concept the genious worked both ways.
I've read that Jeff Lynne hated this album, but then warmed up to it later on. He must have gotten a lot of fan support to make him realize how good this album really is.
@Supercharge87 I believe there was a reason why Jeff Lynne hated the record, because he was screwed over by the label behind this record, Time was originally planned to be a 2 LP ordeal and to include a song called "Beatles Forever" but CBS Records got fidgity with the buget and reduce it to the LP ablum we see today w/o the "Beatles Forever" song
@SuicideBoner8IIIIIID I felt (and still do) very emotional listening to 'Time' and 'Out Of The Blue' over and over when I was a kid. So, I guess all take it as it comes... Whatever it makes you feel is correct. Funnily enough, I read that Jeff was a huge fan of the disco genre and wanted to make serious disco records.
Come on all you ELO fans, demand thy get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I have already contacted them, but I am only one person. Just e-mail them and tell them what you want.
@TheLaluna1 Hey....I sent them an e-mail too....ELO should have been in a long long time ago.....it is a disgrace that they are not....Jeff Lynne should also go in as a song writer and whatever other categories there are...he is a genius created a style of music that in my opinion nobody else has ever come close to mastering and never will!!
I will never forget seeing this in concert and seeing ELO eating in the same restaurant as me and my friend. I was too chicken to ask for an autograph. I wish I would have now.
This would have been a classic theme song for the Twilight movie series. I was actually bummed out when I saw the movie with my girlfriend and they DIDN"T play this.
@NausicaaRaine That's exactly why this song should have been in the movie. It would have made the movie better. OK, I'm not going to rank the movie 'Twilight' in my top 10 list. But after seeing a VERY bad movie, 'Inception', "Twilight" at least had a story behind it. Bottom line is that I LOVE this song and I LOVE ELO!!!
the tone of this song and the movie totally don't match, though. It'd be like playing the Beatles during Saw. Anyway, no matter how good a song is, it can't make a bad movie good. Also I've never seen Inception, but I assumed it had more of a story than twilight, I saw it and the whole thing just seemed like bella complaining about stuff and then bella and edward staring at eachother. Is there really a story? I don't remember it.
@NausicaaRaine Hey, I didn't want this to be the debate of the decade. I love ELO and this song. The movie and book were entertaining. I listen to music and read books to get away from 'The Real World'. And the "Real World" sucks.......
@NausicaaRaine Nothing to be sorry for...:) You have your opinion and I have mine. I truly believe this tune would have made the movie that much better. But since they didn't use it, It's a dead issue.....No matter what, I still LOVE this song!! And I'm glad YOU do too!!
I'm not sure. It just seemed like a good soundtrack for some parts of the movie. Never mind me. I'm odd..was as a kid too. "Hold on tight to your dream" matches them trying to get CarolAnne back from the other side and her father holding the rope.
I also saw the concert in Milwaukee, it was great, but my friend and I got a bite before and ELO came down and ate there too, I was too chicken to get teir autographs, but it made the concert even greater for us.
I was at this concert, it was awesome. The arena was pitch black, and a small robot came out and recited the prolog. It was mayhem after that. I miss this band.
I so love this song with the prolog! I was a huge fan of ELO + when this came out I saw them do this live at Wembley, London. The prolog was recited by a life size robot of R2D2 out of star wars!! AWESOME! I'll never forget that! - what a fantastic way to begin a concert!! ELO were always ahead of their time! :-)
@Hugs4Michael ...I stilll remember the robot opening the show in las vegas too..this was the first big concert I went to 'back in the day'',great stuff here, great memories, I just wish there wasnt 30 years between then and now...Haha..
@stumpya1 i was at that concert too. it was at the aladdin theater for the performing arts. had orchestra seats. i was young and stupid though, and we thought to beat the crowd and left before the encore. that was so awesome though!! it was like my second or third concert.

@azanti I am going to see ELO Part 2 this Friday. As long as they play ELO songs, they are ELO. I have Jeffs Zoom DVD and love it, I just want to hear the music, too bad Kelly is gone. I have his last CD, Great!
I saw the original line up god knows how many times, and the band as they are now, which consisted of three of the original members until Kelly Groucutt died and I don't consider them a knock off band in any sense, and they are every bit as good as the band with Lynne in the line up, if not better and their gigs were certainly better as the original line up gigs were always really short. So no I'm not punking you and I'm not going to debate it, ELO is more than just Lynne.
I saw ELO tour this showin Miwaukee and we saw them come down at the hotel to eat and couldn't beleive it was them. Ii was too chcken to ask for their autograph, but it was a thrill non the less and the show was awesome.
@tonypybus My dad took me to the time tour at Wembley Arena it was the first ever concert I went too . Couldn't say it then as i was too young ...So I'll say it now fucking awesome
@wayneburgess63 Yes, I thought that after hearing it a couple of times too. Listen to the keyboard intro of Baba O'Riley, by The Who. There is one keyboard pattern in Twilight, during the chorus, that matches almost perfectly!
I love this album. Used to listen to it over and over on vinyl. My stepmother has a very eclectic collection and that allowed me to look into a lot of music that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Wish I could find it on CD.
@chopinbloc Yeah I used to listen to it over and over when i was in grade 12 in 82. I was obsessed with it. Still listen to it in the car often. Just timeless (hahaha). God I miss concept albums. It is available on CD.
i thought I was the only one who saw this. Great hearing it from someone else. I was always the weird one at school--a 12 year old american girl who loved an eccentric british band!
@clara2768 the history of this band started in Birmingham UK in 1968 called the move and by 1971 became ELO, your not weird at all they are the closest i think british music came to an answer for the loss of the beatles. They created some really magical records and i would like to add you as a friend i have sent an invite.
My favorite band is Guns N' Roses and I started listening to ELO because I read that it was one of Axl's favorite bands... now I love it as much as I do love Guns...
L'àlbum "Time" d'ELO va salvar les meves orelles de la mediocritat musical d'aquell temps. Gràcies Jeff, Richard, Bev i Kelly. ELO, us trobem a faltar!!
"Time" album saved my ears from the musical mediocrity of those times. Thank you Jeff, Richard, Bev and Kelly. ELO, we miss you!!
I heard this in the "music store" as it was called back then and immediately bought it. On vinyl. The opening, indeed the entire album, is indescribably complex musically. If you can't hear that and just want to bitch about the synthesized voice you are missing the entire picture and I feel sorry for you. This is a vastly underrated masterpiece.
One of the most notable songs of the last half century. When this went on the air in 1981, it gave me goosebumps because of the strange sounds that builds to the climactic intro of Twilight. The song is timeless itself, using blends of electric keyboards and wonderful use of Jeff Lynnes voice in the high octaves. Excellent music for such a legendary group.
the prologue to this summarizes my years of exponentially, unintentionally suicidal excessive drug abuse, the draining of my bank account and loss of friends and family and eventual decent into feeling the need to carry kitchen knives with me and clinically confirmed insanity so perfectly it's amazing
Oh for Christsakes...The opening is clearly a fucking Cylon from Battlestar Galactica ready to kick some ass. SHEEESH....wake the fuck up you 21st century men!!!!
I loved this album and played it to death when I was a kid. So I bought the CD and settled down for those memories to flow. And then my kids just ripped the piss right out of it! I should have seen that one coming from all the way back in 1981 :-)
@Azanti Live, 5 times last year? Please elaborate,; are you saying you saw ELO recently or was it the knock-off band formed by the drummer Bev Bevan ELO Part Two. I was under impession Jeff Lynne just doesn't tour anymore, prefers to produce for other bands. Or are you just having fun, wishing you could see them again, kinda like the main character in the TIME concept album(living in future but longing for the past). Did I expose you "punking" us?
*happy sigh* I just worked out the chord progressions for this on the piano. I couldn't be happier. Jeff Lynne is an amazing composer. A lot of the classical stuff I've learned can't touch this for harmonic and timing complexity.
I agree totally. I've drawn so much inspiration, also on a subliminal level, from these tunes over the years... Jeff Lynne is truly a musical genius, also from a producer point of view.. Always very innovative ways of arranging and producing these masterpieces.. A lot of the production work he's done is epic from a tech point of view, given the avaliable technologies at the time when this was made.. And it still sounds f'in great! Perhaps the album title should have been "Timeless" instead..:-)
Interesting. I play piano too, and am curious about the harmonic complexity you found in this track. Care to share a few details? You can just send me a message if you don't wanna get into theory here in the thread (either way is cool with me).
I'm not being sarcastic, BTW. Am totally serious. :-)
thx nice

Can anyone else hear a little bit of the who in the background?
wayneburgess63 1 year ago 13
@wayneburgess63 Yes, I thought that after hearing it a couple of times too. Listen to the keyboard intro of Baba O'Riley, by The Who. There is one keyboard pattern in Twilight, during the chorus, that matches almost perfectly!

I love this album. Used to listen to it over and over on vinyl. My stepmother has a very eclectic collection and that allowed me to look into a lot of music that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Wish I could find it on CD.
chopinbloc 1 year ago
@chopinbloc Yeah I used to listen to it over and over when i was in grade 12 in 82. I was obsessed with it. Still listen to it in the car often. Just timeless (hahaha). God I miss concept albums. It is available on CD.

i thought I was the only one who saw this. Great hearing it from someone else. I was always the weird one at school--a 12 year old american girl who loved an eccentric british band!
clara2768 1 year ago
@clara2768 the history of this band started in Birmingham UK in 1968 called the move and by 1971 became ELO, your not weird at all they are the closest i think british music came to an answer for the loss of the beatles. They created some really magical records and i would like to add you as a friend i have sent an invite.

ELO Time is one of my most fave records of all time. Nothing can beat this album.
motokops22 1 year ago
I heard this in the "music store" as it was called back then and immediately bought it. On vinyl. The opening, indeed the entire album, is indescribably complex musically. If you can't hear that and just want to bitch about the synthesized voice you are missing the entire picture and I feel sorry for you. This is a vastly underrated masterpiece.
natureboy99 1 year ago 3
I'd never known about ELO until this year, and this is hands down my favorite album. I could listen over and over and never get tired of it.
I'm 17 and I prefer this over the new crap:)

If you have this record, try prologue on different speeds like I did when I was young! kinda spooky slower!
still have the record, possibly the greatest underappreciated album of all time - in my opinion. Jeff Lynne is a great songwriter/musician/etc.
love his solo stuff from the 80's too

ESTA ES LA BUENA MUSICA
ARTURINCA 1 year ago

Just on the border of your waking mind.
There lies another time, where darkness and light are one.
And as you tread the halls of sanity, you feel so glad to be unable to go beyond.
I have a message from another time.

I loved this album and played it to death when I was a kid. So I bought the CD and settled down for those memories to flow. And then my kids just ripped the piss right out of it! I should have seen that one coming from all the way back in 1981 :-)

I agree it's one of their best. I saw them live 5 times last year and they played this song at every gig, it was awesome.
Azanti 1 year ago 2
@Azanti Live, 5 times last year? Please elaborate,; are you saying you saw ELO recently or was it the knock-off band formed by the drummer Bev Bevan ELO Part Two. I was under impession Jeff Lynne just doesn't tour anymore, prefers to produce for other bands. Or are you just having fun, wishing you could see them again, kinda like the main character in the TIME concept album(living in future but longing for the past). Did I expose you "punking" us?
scubarulz 1 year ago
I LOVE this song. <3
TakeMeOut2Nite05 1 year ago
*happy sigh* I just worked out the chord progressions for this on the piano. I couldn't be happier. Jeff Lynne is an amazing composer. A lot of the classical stuff I've learned can't touch this for harmonic and timing complexity.
janiscortese 2 years ago 2
I agree totally. I've drawn so much inspiration, also on a subliminal level, from these tunes over the years... Jeff Lynne is truly a musical genius, also from a producer point of view.. Always very innovative ways of arranging and producing these masterpieces.. A lot of the production work he's done is epic from a tech point of view, given the avaliable technologies at the time when this was made.. And it still sounds f'in great! Perhaps the album title should have been "Timeless" instead..:-)
Thissucksrealbad 1 year ago 3
@janiscortese
Interesting. I play piano too, and am curious about the harmonic complexity you found in this track. Care to share a few details? You can just send me a message if you don't wanna get into theory here in the thread (either way is cool with me).
I'm not being sarcastic, BTW. Am totally serious. :-)
