  • Very beautiful playing! And a lovely arrangement. Thanks for posting! :)

  • I love it! gives me chills :)

  • The song is English not Irish or Scottish.

  • mike118117: Thanks for bringing this to my attention. You are correct, in part. According to Wikipedia, this song "is thought to be an English or Scottish folk song". However, other sources claim it to be Irish (ireland-information and other websites). I have updated the description text in the sidebar to indicate that it is also claimed by the English tradition. Since this is such an old song, it's precise origin may be very difficult to determine.

    love/peace

    jesse

  • Thanks Jesse bro! Means a lot to me coming from a guitarist like yourself.

  • very well done.. and a piezo sounds like a piezo. let your talent shine with a good instrument.

  • Thanks for watching blargendarg. Perhaps someday when I have the money to spare and if I could make a living playing professionally, then I could justify buying an high-end acoustic guitar. God bless.-

  • A lousy guitarist sounds lousy on even the best custom made guitar. You sir are a VERY good guitarist so you sound very good on whatever you play! I do hope that someday you can save up enough for a better guitar that you really like and want though.

  • Thank you my brother.

  • I'm convinced that there are as many variations of this song, for guitar, as there are players.

Personally I would prefer hearing a little less harmonics and more straight forward picking. All that aside.... you played it exceptionally well.

  • Thanks for watching and commenting Swampdog. I sometimes can't help myself, I just love playing harmonics...

  • Great tune Robert. Your style is pleasant to hear and see. I rated 5 stars as a guitar rookie. From a more critical view I would say you need to shape the partial hard and soft edges. It's about the edges. Interesting to read some history about this song. To me it has been a great inspiration to learn and play folksongs and using alt.tunings.

    Lapz

  • Thanks for your comment Lapz. Yes, the performance is a bit rough around the edges. I should of done another take on this. I will post a better take someday.

  • Excellent brother, excellent....

    *M*

  • Thank you my sister "M"!

  • Beautifull!

  • Thanks buddy Joeal! Love your playing, my friend. You have great guitar chops. I'm off to subscribe to your channel...

  • I enjoyed this a lot. I checked out Ed's version, also very nice. There's only one other I've heard/seen that is in the same class: Tam Stevenson's rendition at Acoustic Avalon 2006. A search for "Tam Stevenson" on YouTube will give you the video, since I can't post the URL here.

  • Hey Jim, thanks for watching. I checked out Tam's version and you're right; I added this video as a favorite. Perhaps I'll create an instrumental "Water is Wide" group to add all the versions I can find on YouTube...what do you think?

  • That would be an interesting group. There a lot of folks who have posted videos of this song, the majority include vocal (and not often very good). It seems that for as simple as it is, this old tune is very demanding when it comes to playing it well.

Is Tam playing in Drop-D, Open-D, or Open-G? It's been so long since I tuned to any of those that I can't really tell.

  • very excellent instumental of this classic spiritual.praise the lord!

  • Thanks brother Dan! I'm very glad you liked it. It's my own arrangement. God bless.-

  • This is lovely, you play so well. This one really makes me think. Ahhhh... nice. :)

    Vally

  • Thank you so much again my friend Valerie!

  • Great song well done***** Judy and I sometimes play this song. What tunning might this be thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for watching Bruce. You and Judy are awesome musicians. The tuning is DADGAD. You will find more info about this tune in the description to the right of this video. God bless.-

  • Ah man that is so beautiful, You are an amazingly talented guitar player Robert. I could listen all day.

    Rocket

  • Hey Rob, my brother! I appreciate you coming by and watching my video. I have no problem playing all day long if you are willing to listen. God bless.-

  • GREAT playing man! Love those harmonics!!

  • Thanks buddy Jerry! I use a lot of harmonics in my music. I guess I'm a harmonics kind of guy. ;-)

  • Moving, touched my soul, had to wipe away the tears.

  • Geoffrey, thanks for commenting. I feel the same way every time I play this tune. It makes me so happy that I have been able to transmit this to you through my guitar playing. God bless.-

  • truly truly one of the best versions of this song I have ever heard....

It is such a wonderful way to end or begin one's day...listening to this work of art...

    *sheri*

  • Hey Sheri, thank you so much. You always have something positive and encouraging to say, which fills my heart with joy. Sorry for not replying sooner, I was in the UK without Internet access (I live in Texas). God bless you, my friend.

  • very relaxing. put me in a nice, mellow mood.

  • Thanks buddy Mike. I like your tunes.

  • Came back to drop some more stars!

  • Thanks buddy Pat, you are too kind. Please check out my harp guitar video and let me know what you think, you may find it interesting. God bless.-

  • This video's fabulous inspiration for me to keep playing guitar--great motivation to see someone play something this delicate when all of what I hear usually in Memphis is some kids trying to make "rock and blues" on Fender Strats. (I hope you know what i'm talking about) None the less--Thank you! :)

    Brittany

  • Thanks Brittany! You are too kind and I know exactly what you mean. When you get a chance, check out my other videos and let me know what you think.

    God bless,

    - robert

  • simply beautiful, your melody shines from the chording, the feeling as rich as any voice,

perhaps more so, since we are left listening closer, on the edge of our chairs....

beautiful way to begin a morning..

  • Thanks Doug. Your words make me very happy and inspire me to keep at it. God has been good to me and my health is much better now. I still have quite a bit more guitar playing to do here on Earth. Soon I will be posting more videos of my music. Please stay tuned.

    God bless,

    - Robert

  • Fantastic music, and it looks like it makes you truly happy to play. Having listening to a lot sad or aggressive music during my teenage years, it's wonderful to discover more and more people who play with joy. Thank you.

  • Thanks Wobinidin, your music is great too! I appreciate your comment.

    God b;ess,

    - Robert

  • May I say, celestial music, see u bro in paradise, but don't know about a jam, there's no use for my blues there...

Thanks for bringing echoes of that place here anyway,

    Bless u, -HM

  • I'm sorry to tell you this, but I happen to know that this video was not made in 1724; they didn't have color then.

    Otherwise a very fine arrangement/performance.

  • Thanks eyknow, for making me laugh! You're right, color didn't come until 1725.

    God bless,

    - Robert

  • Robert, I am truly amazed by your incredible gifts! You're playing some chords that I can only dream of =) The tone of your guitar is very nice. Man! Great job! I am inspired by your playing and what God has entrusted to you! Keep using it for His glory! May your music touch the lives of many. Mine sure is!! -Joe Monto

  • Joe,

Your comment makes me very happy and inspires me to keep at it. Thank you my friend!

Playing in open, alternate tunings allows you to discover strange and beautiful chords you normally couldn't play in standard tuning because of the expanded range. Give it a try. With your talent, it shouldn't be that difficult. I could give you some pointers if you'd like.

    God bless,

    - Robert

  • 40 years of playing and back to first grade for me.... A masterpiece!!!

  • Thanks Byrdfan! Just remember that passion is more important than technique. Playing guitar with passion is what touches the souls of listeners, not how difficult or advanced is your playing. People can feel the passion with which you play and will respond accordingly. But you already know that, of course. ;-)

    God bless,

    - Robert

  • Wow, I am honored you responded to my post. And yes what came through in you masterpiece was your passion. As well as ability that few of us will ever have.... BTY this is one of my all time favorite pieces which I have done several different recordings of..... Yours dwarfs my efforts......But has also encouraged me to go back and try a few new things.... All the Best Al
