mike118117: Thanks for bringing this to my attention. You are correct, in part. According to Wikipedia, this song "is thought to be an English or Scottish folk song". However, other sources claim it to be Irish (ireland-information and other websites). I have updated the description text in the sidebar to indicate that it is also claimed by the English tradition. Since this is such an old song, it's precise origin may be very difficult to determine.

Great tune Robert. Your style is pleasant to hear and see. I rated 5 stars as a guitar rookie. From a more critical view I would say you need to shape the partial hard and soft edges. It's about the edges. Interesting to read some history about this song. To me it has been a great inspiration to learn and play folksongs and using alt.tunings.

That would be an interesting group. There a lot of folks who have posted videos of this song, the majority include vocal (and not often very good). It seems that for as simple as it is, this old tune is very demanding when it comes to playing it well.

Is Tam playing in Drop-D, Open-D, or Open-G? It's been so long since I tuned to any of those that I can't really tell.

Playing in open, alternate tunings allows you to discover strange and beautiful chords you normally couldn't play in standard tuning because of the expanded range. Give it a try. With your talent, it shouldn't be that difficult. I could give you some pointers if you'd like.
