your technique is just amazing. I've been watching your videos all morning. God really has blessed you with incridibal talent. Thank you so much for your music!
mike118117: Thanks for bringing this to my attention. You are correct, in part. According to Wikipedia, this song "is thought to be an English or Scottish folk song". However, other sources claim it to be Irish (ireland-information and other websites). I have updated the description text in the sidebar to indicate that it is also claimed by the English tradition. Since this is such an old song, it's precise origin may be very difficult to determine.
What a beautiful arrangement! Thank you so much for sharing. You "own" this song. It is now the standard by which all other renditions will be judged.
thanks to qpidon to make me discover your fantatic interpretation!i recognize a video comment of vreci (love sunset song of him)thanks again and happy new year from france!PS 5*****+FAV OF COURSE!
Thanks for watching blargendarg. Perhaps someday when I have the money to spare and if I could make a living playing professionally, then I could justify buying an high-end acoustic guitar. God bless.-
A lousy guitarist sounds lousy on even the best custom made guitar. You sir are a VERY good guitarist so you sound very good on whatever you play! I do hope that someday you can save up enough for a better guitar that you really like and want though.
Great tune Robert. Your style is pleasant to hear and see. I rated 5 stars as a guitar rookie. From a more critical view I would say you need to shape the partial hard and soft edges. It's about the edges. Interesting to read some history about this song. To me it has been a great inspiration to learn and play folksongs and using alt.tunings.
Thanks for your comment Lapz. Yes, the performance is a bit rough around the edges. I should of done another take on this. I will post a better take someday.
I enjoyed this a lot. I checked out Ed's version, also very nice. There's only one other I've heard/seen that is in the same class: Tam Stevenson's rendition at Acoustic Avalon 2006. A search for "Tam Stevenson" on YouTube will give you the video, since I can't post the URL here.
Hey Jim, thanks for watching. I checked out Tam's version and you're right; I added this video as a favorite. Perhaps I'll create an instrumental "Water is Wide" group to add all the versions I can find on YouTube...what do you think?
That would be an interesting group. There a lot of folks who have posted videos of this song, the majority include vocal (and not often very good). It seems that for as simple as it is, this old tune is very demanding when it comes to playing it well.
Is Tam playing in Drop-D, Open-D, or Open-G? It's been so long since I tuned to any of those that I can't really tell.
Thanks for watching Bruce. You and Judy are awesome musicians. The tuning is DADGAD. You will find more info about this tune in the description to the right of this video. God bless.-
Hey Rob, my brother! I appreciate you coming by and watching my video. I have no problem playing all day long if you are willing to listen. God bless.-
Geoffrey, thanks for commenting. I feel the same way every time I play this tune. It makes me so happy that I have been able to transmit this to you through my guitar playing. God bless.-
Hey Sheri, thank you so much. You always have something positive and encouraging to say, which fills my heart with joy. Sorry for not replying sooner, I was in the UK without Internet access (I live in Texas). God bless you, my friend.
This video's fabulous inspiration for me to keep playing guitar--great motivation to see someone play something this delicate when all of what I hear usually in Memphis is some kids trying to make "rock and blues" on Fender Strats. (I hope you know what i'm talking about) None the less--Thank you! :)
Man I have to be honest..it's 3 in the morning, just got back from the hospital with my wife(sprained ankle)checked on the kids(4)still kinda wired from the journey and I have a headache..but after listening to you play everything seemed to just level out..absolutely great playin..I like listening to my friends and family play and you were on my cuz's list.(xis333) .....saw your note that you had some medical issues and I sure hope you can get back at it soon..take care DougHowell

Fantastic music, and it looks like it makes you truly happy to play. Having listening to a lot sad or aggressive music during my teenage years, it's wonderful to discover more and more people who play with joy. Thank you.
Robert, I am truly amazed by your incredible gifts! You're playing some chords that I can only dream of =) The tone of your guitar is very nice. Man! Great job! I'm convinced that there are as many variations of this song, for guitar, as there are players.
Personally I would prefer hearing a little less harmonics and more straight forward picking. All that aside.... you played it exceptionally well.
