AOL 9.5 Refresh BETA 8 is pretty fast compared to AOL 9.0 ... I have to admit that it has a good email archive database, that is all I use it for. I just sign on to get mail and archive all incoming and outgoing mail forever! It is my 'outlook', and I am running it on a Asus G50VT laptop, so the bloat of that software (even though 9.5 refresh is leaner than the previous version) doesn't affect me.

I use AOL as an ISP on a Mac, and have tried the AOL Desktop browser, but it's redundant. Safari, FF, Flock etc are all better. AOL DT didn't take over my Mac, and was easy to uninstall though. As an ISP (in the UK) they are OK until you need tech support. They do their damndest to keep you on the phone - 30 mins later it turns out the problem is theirs! A shame cos support used to be a point in their favour.

I was able to get rid of their software completely many times. laptop and PC. But when I use them I get a lot of interference with pages I want to see, I get way more spyware and its slow.
I dont use IE anymore either for the same reason, it blocks page after page that firefox allows...easy choice.

Well it is refreshing to finally hear someone defend the early years of AOL and give it props for what it has accomplished. Don't get me wrong though - although AOL H.Q. was practically next door to me I hold no love for them. What they became in the end was nothing shy of despicably egregious. Having said that, there still can be no doubt that they single handedly exploded the internet evolution into what it has become today.
It was also a vital service to the general populace that didn't understand all of the intricacies of establishing a network connection and browsers and email clients. It was just a different time, a different age. Not everyone (think of your grandparents) was so tech savvy in the mid 1990s. In fact most people weren't.
Nevertheless it is sad what they descended into. Very sad.

I used the free trial ONCE long after I had already been on the web for years. Unistalled it once the Free Trial was over cause it was too invasive.AOL did nothing but make money

I was able to get rid of their software completely many times. laptop and PC. But when I use them I get a lot of interference with pages I want to see, I get way more spyware and its slow.
I dont use IE anymore either for the same reason, it blocks page after page that firefox allows...easy choice.

Between the ages of 14-18, AOL provided me with the majority of my 3.5 floppies. Atleast a couple a week in the mail. At a $1 per disk at the time, I saved some major money. Thank you AOL!

i used to draw on the free aol cds that came into the mail. then i would cut them up and throw them out. i did have aol like 4 years ago but then i got dsl and i was soo happy! aol always froze on me and it was such slow dial up!

Well it is refreshing to finally hear someone defend the early years of AOL and give it props for what it has accomplished. Don't get me wrong though - although AOL H.Q. was practically next door to me I hold no love for them. What they became in the end was nothing shy of despicably egregious. Having said that, there still can be no doubt that they single handedly exploded the internet evolution into what it has become today.

It was also a vital service to the general populace that didn't understand all of the intricacies of establishing a network connection and browsers and email clients. It was just a different time, a different age. Not everyone (think of your grandparents) was so tech savvy in the mid 1990s. In fact most people weren't.
