Inspired by doesn't mean that Lars is better than him. I know it's an opinion, but for fuck's sake it's a wrong one. Mike is far superior to Lars in any way you could care to name. He's faster, more technical, he can play a huge range of styles, and he has better facial hair.
@AQDeathstar Not even saying Lars is better than Portnoy, I know Lars isnt the greatest drummers ever, he has a unique style though for sure (lars does, ive seen lars live, he can play whether or not people can believe that) But I was just saying Portnoy is influenced by lars everyone is like shocked and since when does a dream theater vid have comments about lars seriously?
I've seen Lars at Sonisphere managing to screw up One. A song he's had 20 years to practise, that most 15-year-old drummers with double bass can do well, and he screwed up the signature part.
I respect him as a drummer, but when people start talking as though Lars is better because he came before Mike, I get annoyed.
@AQDeathstar well I think people need to release Metallica has a whole is getting old, People need to get that. The band is getting older, i love Metallica to death i own every album blah blah. Lars is a great player, he isnt the best and he isnt the greatest. I know Portnoy is a great drummer ive met him and ive seen him play live, but in the end, you cant compare drummers from two different genres... But yes, Portnoy is a great player, completely phenomenal player.
@libertheme66 realize* but what Lars does, he does it good. And he has a unique style that is very easily recognizeable. but people need to realize the band is getting older, and theyre not teenagers anymore.
@TheJasepetrucci I honestly feel that its age, not laziness the bands put a lot of effort in their performances, but its age. I dont care though i love that band.
No portnoy wasn't getting lazier he just wanted a break from the band and when he asked they kicked him out. And mangini can never be as good as portnoy
if i could play drums like this, i would suck my own dick..... except i wouldn't have to.... people would be paying ME to suck my dick.... lmao! fucking BEAST
@HarnessDavid I agree except for the solo-bit @ 4.00 which is quite cool. Portnoy's become lazier, perhaps because of age during the last couple of albums. Double kick @ 180bpm has been the trend during the last couple of albums. I'm really satisfied with Mangini in the band now. It felt like MP had given up both musically and personally.
@Eye4Fail I just think that it is fear to give a little bit credit for MP about he's work. He has been a creative motor for allmost everything DT has made since 90's I think. Now ofcourse they will find new people to go on with these materials etc. but MP is a big reason why DT has become what it is. MP is also a big reason for that drummers are in "frontline" and not only behind the kit... Lazy is wrong word, maybe a lack of interest or creativenes(?), but he has done more than many ever can
Interesting. I didn't know the drums were so intricate during the hardest part of the guitar solo. (4:49 - 5:00) Who Knew?! No wonder DT is so fucking awesome.
i just love the solo of this song so much, the snare is on perfect tick every time, a perfect metronome. and yet he makes it look so effortless as though it's second-nature to the degree of walking or breathing. i can never understand how people can train to such a degree, absolutely biblical.
@x5492 i dunno not sure but im pretty sure mike portnoy uses drum triggers. nevertheless. pro. :P HAHAHAHA i still dont know how to head bang to the intro!
Portnoy is simply one of the Greatest MUSICIANS in recorded sound. He re-invented, (like Buddy Rich, and Neil Peart....and others), his musical instrument. Les Paul, Jimi, and Eddie (and others too) re-invented the tenor electric guitar..... Mike continues to re-invent the Drum Kit/Sets/Percussive instrumentation............ a world class Musician for sure!!!!
Mike is greatness.if only he wouldnt sleep with his lover(a7x) and then left his wife(DT) and then being kicked out and wanted to return to her.now his pal (mangini)bangs her wife. just theory with oximoron and anafora
4:04 This is why he's my favorite drummer. Playing what seems to me as pure random and still following the guitar perfectly making it sound so awesome!
@NeveGialla161 Check out DT2BLZ's video of him playing The Count of Tuscany if you haven't already. He's wearing a shirt with himself on it in that one. That's how you know he's epic :)
See that's not true although there may be 1 person named mike portnoy there are at least 5 drummers that are double his skill. I love the man he is my inspiration to drum but DT had 7 drummers who had tried out that should have all made it over mike Mangini. I love DT and when I say this it's from the heart you guys are oblivious to to choose a worse mike then portnoy and turned down the best such as Marco minnemin or aquiles priestess or even Thomas Lang
@DaFuckinSchwartz "7 drummers who had tried out that should have all made it over mike Mangini."
You mean the ones that struggled with the odd time signature jams? Playing with DT takes a lot more than chops. You have to have to have a complete understand of music theory beyond 4/4, 3/4 and the key of C. They chose Mangini because he does understand all of these things, he was a teacher at Berklee prior to joining DT. And there were 6 others, not 7.
@DaFuckinSchwartz I do not understand why it is so important to put MP down? There is no 5 better, and I must say that there is not so many people who can even rank MP anywhere. Teaching in berklee... wow, and it was so hard for MM to leave that job... What do You think If MP wants would they take him to teach in Berklee...? Hahah I think Berklee would do anything to have MP if he wants to teach... But their style is different so there is no point to compare MM & MP.
Mangini is very good but yes he isn't Mike. Although I much prefer Transatlantic over DT so I can see what Mike was thinking. Also, Blake Richardson I believe just passed up Mike in skill. Lol just saying
when i first heard DT this was the song i heard, i thought it sounded like metallica, but thought "nah lars is NO WAY NEAR as good of a drummer as this"
@ProgMetalPortnoy10 Pro tip, never compare Lars and Mike. Lars stomps Mike. Just because you hit every fucking drum/cymbal doesn't mean you're a good drummer.
@RideTheLightning8801 Sorry, I am a life long Metallica fan. However, I am a drummer of 20 years. Lars is average at best. The only album that he sounded above average on, was ...And Justice For All, which was a great drum performance. Mike Portnoy is light years ahead of Lars. Saying Lars is better than Portnoy is like saying O'Doul's is better than Budweiser.
@goldwrapper Agreed. Lars never brought any creativity to the table, it was always a standard beat with mediocre fills. Granted, the music was still amazing because the drums fitted the songs perfectly, but I for one do not draw any inspiration from him.
@rushbum I don't know about you, but to me it looks like he's just having fun and getting into it, rather than having to put forth much effort at all. Just saying.
It takes brainpractice to learn drums because the two halfs of the brains want different things. Mikes' brains is divided in three pieces and this is the proof of it.
dude....danny carey is like ringo starr compared to portnoy. u probably dont even play an instrument. this is how u could say this. its just foolishness. like saying hannah montana has more complexity than beethoven. it just simple fact that danny carey...i like him...tools kind of lame in that 4 albums in 20 years and the last one could be bedtime music....but danny carey is NOTHING compared to energetic drummers like Portnoy and Mangini and Lang and Minnemann. no comparison.
@maiden9449 you ridicule this guy's comparison of Carey to Portnoy, yet you yourself compare him to Mangini, Thomas Lang and Marco Minneman...THAT is ridiculous. Portnoy is a great drummer without doubt, but he is not in the same league of playing as Thomas, Mike and Marco. Those 3 are in the true upper echelons of drumming, and Portnoy is NOT up there with them. His playing is quite simplistic in comparison to theirs. Also, for the record, Carey probably does out-play Portnoy, but not by much.
dude.did u watch the auditions? i gained a new respect for portnoy that i should of had.
also.mangini and the rest are show boats. theyre like vagabonds...jumpin around...blowing minds with their skills.but are they really working drummers? not really. is there really any drummer as good as portnoy IN MUSIC? not sittin round makin books and videos.
portnoy was in fucking DREAM THEATER! the best band to happen to music in 25 yrs.
the rest of em, who'd they play for? portnoy wins!
@maiden9449 you're seriously asking is Mangini, Lang and Minneman are working drummers? Do yourself a favour and look them all up on Modern Drummer or Wikipedia to see the list of artists they have worked with. OK, none of them have been long-standing members of any particular bands, but they are undoubtedly working drummers. Portnoy is great, no question! But I think you owe Danny Carey a bit more respect. Likening him to Ringo is a joke and you should educate yourself before saying such things
brother....i love danny carey. he is the band as far as im concerned. he's amazing. he has a very unique drumming style. very odd time...very difficult. but sometimes...its a bit nerdy. not meaning that in a bad way. but some of the things he does....just doesnt flow for me (i play the drums). and i sit back and go....why does he do that (in certain portions of music)? it is awkward. but uniquely Carey. but danny carey is way easier to play than Mike Portnoy. i'm just telling u.
@maiden9449 man I've been drumming for 20 years - you don't need to tell me about whose parts are harder to cover! I can see we're just gonna have to disagree on this but i'll finish by saying that in my opinion and experience, I find it easier to play Portnoy's parts than Carey's. I just think that Carey's playing is more interesting and, to me, more musical. But hey, it's all a mater of taste! All the best man, and respect to both Mike and Danny.
i have to say this. danny carey has...what...5 albums in 20 years!!!...and really didnt start hitting odd time hard til the last three....is he really a working drummer? mike portnoy is god to him! thats just the way it is.
@maiden9449 Mike Mangini (or as I, perhaps unfairly, like to think of him now, "New Mike") played with Steve Vai for 5 years and recorded three albums (one live) with him. Vai's got a bit of a rep for having some of the world's best drummers in his live bands; I think after Mangini moved on he hired Virgil Donati, who as you may know was one of the other 6 drummers DT auditioned. New Mike's incredibly hard working, just look at how much he gives to his audition (not that you see much of it).
i like the new mike. he seemed extremely grateful and humble. and i know he's a freak on the drums. and im lookin forward to seeing how DT sounds with him. but at the same time....i'm a bit ticked about the whole damn thing.
i believe minnemann to be the best drummer on the earth...but he's sort of a goof. didnt have the edgey presence that mangini had. but portnoy (saw DT last summer with maiden) just is a force to be reckoned with. huge stage presence.
Wow, dude I don't remember music being a contest, I remember music being music and that is that, why is it that every one has to argue that this person is best no this person is best. Can all of you SHUT THE HELL UP and enjoy it for what it is instead of argue.
tool doesnt even play lead guitar. theyre not in the same league as DT. thats just the way it is.wake up! tool has sort of a cult following. and u, like christians, think youre right. period. its pointless to argue with u. tool is slow and sometimes flat out boring.when the fuck are they going back into studio to blow our minds like 10000 days did (im being facetious).
@iWentToNam sry bud but this is a harder song then rosetta stoned trust me ticks n leeches now that a technical song plus danny n mike r like the same technical n r prolly too of the best modern drummers n the las 15 years
As much as I love Joey J and every other drummer, MP just blows these guys away. Who gives a damn if you can play faster than shit, ala Joey or the guy from Slayer, Mike has some much technique playing, it's not even fair!!
@raylgonzo. yeh, i like joey but mp owns him. i think MP and George Kollias are the top guys of rock, to be honest. just cuz kollias is in nile doesnt mean hes all speed. he started out playin jazz and other stuff, then transitioned into metal
@1337RaysoRb well you could write something that consists of 2x 7/8 and then one 6/8, rise and repeat and boom! you got your 20/8. Not all that magical ;)
he has his kit set up so precise to play amazing shit, and hes a god, so ya, lol. and rasie ur hand if ud steal his kit if ever given thae chance -raises hand-
I have a question, Im gonna be honest I dont know much about drumming, but alot of people seem to br bringing alot of attention to the part at 4:04, i know i cant do it, but is that part really that hard. I dont know what hes doing on that part that is so much more difficult than the rest of the parts in the song. Can someone give me a detailed explanation of what he is doing in that part that is difficult to do. Im really not trying to come off as a dick, im just ignorant when it comes to drums

dude....danny carey is like ringo starr compared to portnoy. u probably dont even play an instrument. this is how u could say this. its just foolishness. like saying hannah montana has more complexity than beethoven. it just simple fact that danny carey...i like him...tools kind of lame in that 4 albums in 20 years and the last one could be bedtime music....but danny carey is NOTHING compared to energetic drummers like Portnoy and Mangini and Lang and Minnemann. no comparison.
maiden9449 9 months ago
@maiden9449 you ridicule this guy's comparison of Carey to Portnoy, yet you yourself compare him to Mangini, Thomas Lang and Marco Minneman...THAT is ridiculous. Portnoy is a great drummer without doubt, but he is not in the same league of playing as Thomas, Mike and Marco. Those 3 are in the true upper echelons of drumming, and Portnoy is NOT up there with them. His playing is quite simplistic in comparison to theirs. Also, for the record, Carey probably does out-play Portnoy, but not by much.

@calcuttr1
dude.did u watch the auditions? i gained a new respect for portnoy that i should of had.
also.mangini and the rest are show boats. theyre like vagabonds...jumpin around...blowing minds with their skills.but are they really working drummers? not really. is there really any drummer as good as portnoy IN MUSIC? not sittin round makin books and videos.
portnoy was in fucking DREAM THEATER! the best band to happen to music in 25 yrs.
the rest of em, who'd they play for? portnoy wins!
maiden9449 9 months ago
@maiden9449 you're seriously asking is Mangini, Lang and Minneman are working drummers? Do yourself a favour and look them all up on Modern Drummer or Wikipedia to see the list of artists they have worked with. OK, none of them have been long-standing members of any particular bands, but they are undoubtedly working drummers. Portnoy is great, no question! But I think you owe Danny Carey a bit more respect. Likening him to Ringo is a joke and you should educate yourself before saying such things

@calcuttr1
brother....i love danny carey. he is the band as far as im concerned. he's amazing. he has a very unique drumming style. very odd time...very difficult. but sometimes...its a bit nerdy. not meaning that in a bad way. but some of the things he does....just doesnt flow for me (i play the drums). and i sit back and go....why does he do that (in certain portions of music)? it is awkward. but uniquely Carey. but danny carey is way easier to play than Mike Portnoy. i'm just telling u.
maiden9449 9 months ago
@maiden9449 man I've been drumming for 20 years - you don't need to tell me about whose parts are harder to cover! I can see we're just gonna have to disagree on this but i'll finish by saying that in my opinion and experience, I find it easier to play Portnoy's parts than Carey's. I just think that Carey's playing is more interesting and, to me, more musical. But hey, it's all a mater of taste! All the best man, and respect to both Mike and Danny.
calcuttr1 9 months ago
@calcuttr1
i have to say this. danny carey has...what...5 albums in 20 years!!!...and really didnt start hitting odd time hard til the last three....is he really a working drummer? mike portnoy is god to him! thats just the way it is.
maiden9449 8 months ago
@maiden9449 You know Tool isn't Danny's only band right?
Portnoy is a great drummer, but so is Danny. Neither of them is a God to each other, they're both just great drummers who respect each other.
ryder187mac 8 months ago
@maiden9449 Mike Mangini (or as I, perhaps unfairly, like to think of him now, "New Mike") played with Steve Vai for 5 years and recorded three albums (one live) with him. Vai's got a bit of a rep for having some of the world's best drummers in his live bands; I think after Mangini moved on he hired Virgil Donati, who as you may know was one of the other 6 drummers DT auditioned. New Mike's incredibly hard working, just look at how much he gives to his audition (not that you see much of it).
TheBurnievator 8 months ago
@TheBurnievator
i like the new mike. he seemed extremely grateful and humble. and i know he's a freak on the drums. and im lookin forward to seeing how DT sounds with him. but at the same time....i'm a bit ticked about the whole damn thing.
i believe minnemann to be the best drummer on the earth...but he's sort of a goof. didnt have the edgey presence that mangini had. but portnoy (saw DT last summer with maiden) just is a force to be reckoned with. huge stage presence.

@maiden9449
Wow, dude I don't remember music being a contest, I remember music being music and that is that, why is it that every one has to argue that this person is best no this person is best. Can all of you SHUT THE HELL UP and enjoy it for what it is instead of argue.
bassguitarkeybordwiz 5 months ago
@iWentToNam
tool doesnt even play lead guitar. theyre not in the same league as DT. thats just the way it is.wake up! tool has sort of a cult following. and u, like christians, think youre right. period. its pointless to argue with u. tool is slow and sometimes flat out boring.when the fuck are they going back into studio to blow our minds like 10000 days did (im being facetious).
maiden9449 8 months ago
@iWentToNam sry bud but this is a harder song then rosetta stoned trust me ticks n leeches now that a technical song plus danny n mike r like the same technical n r prolly too of the best modern drummers n the las 15 years

As much as I love Joey J and every other drummer, MP just blows these guys away. Who gives a damn if you can play faster than shit, ala Joey or the guy from Slayer, Mike has some much technique playing, it's not even fair!!
raylgonzo 10 months ago
@raylgonzo. yeh, i like joey but mp owns him. i think MP and George Kollias are the top guys of rock, to be honest. just cuz kollias is in nile doesnt mean hes all speed. he started out playin jazz and other stuff, then transitioned into metal

They said the intro is in 20/8 time signature.. how the hell can someone write a riff in 20/8. Definitely not from this world!
1337RaysoRb 11 months ago
@1337RaysoRb well you could write something that consists of 2x 7/8 and then one 6/8, rise and repeat and boom! you got your 20/8. Not all that magical ;)
KillerFrettchen 10 months ago
@KillerFrettchen Yep I figured it out I think it is 4x 5/2 ;)

Zeldabo146676 11 months ago
@Zeldabo146676 its all the diffrent movement in the arms and legs so its very hard to stay in rythm
TheMrbaasb 11 months ago
@Zeldabo146676 Every limb is building up upon each part that each limb is playing, and soon it becomes 7 or 8 different things going on at once.
