  • Very impressive video! You sounded great! May I ask one thing though?

Where does one get a lute? I want one so badly after seeing a few videos like yours, and I just don't know where to get one!

  • @xFrostiee:

I came here because of Name of the Wind too! He just played Josn's lute. That's awesome haha

  • I am speechless... that was better than awesome.

  • @BarbaricNotions

    Thanks a lot ;-)

  • I came here for the 'Scottish', I left feeling more Scottish than usual xD

  • this is so meditative and beautiful val.. j'adore :)

  • @debs4mysweetbaby One of my favorite... ;-)

  • I came here because of The Name of the Wind

  • @xFrostiee So you're welcome here ;-)

    V.

  • @xFrostiee me too! Wanted to know how a lute sounds...

  • Really beautiful performance. I think the lute has to be among the greatest sounding instruments.

  • @Bolognalegs

    Thank you ;-)

  • Is that a Barber lute? Sounds great!

  • @synicman No! It is a Murphy's lute ;-) (much better...)

  • @Luthval Stephen Murphy? The price seems a lot better, that's for sure :)

  • @synicman I don't know about prices of Barber compared to Murphy. But I know about quality... Barbers lutes are very good and beautiful. Murphy's ones are excellent. But i is just my personal opinion. Someone else advice may differs. Just try both and take your choice by yourself.

    ;-)

    V.

  • this music just calms the spirit.

  • @knightofbruma

Maybe it is that music was made for... today it is perhaps different with modern music...

    Thanks

    Val

  • the Lute is lovely, it really is

  • bravo. Well done!

  • @alanbstard4

    Thank you very much !

    V.

  • I love the feeling that the song needs another chord to end. Leaving it in suspense like an imperfect cadence. Wonderful playing conveying much emotion!

  • @Edwardo1993

    Thanks a lot ;-)

    V.

  • why do i have to have such an expensive hobby as with pedals amps and guitars....why cant playin this or and acoustic suffice.....damn it....

  • @ihaveaverybadcold

It is also quite expensive to have lutes of many size, strings and shapes... lol

    V.

  • Beautiful tune, thank you for sharing!

  • Thank you for sharing this! :D

  • @FreakyMonstaa

    Thanks a lot ;-)

  • @DwellerOfTheElmTree

    Thank you !

    V.

  • ive noticed something very oriental in this piece and some of O'Carolan's work...strange but nice

  • @shariotoflove

Very true, probably because of the use of some pentatonic scales, more obvious even in the Skene mandora book.

    V.

  • aye ! nothing beats listening to a beautiful lute = )

  • @MyFISHLEGS

    Thanks ;-)

  • What lovely music great work!

  • @lizziestew

    Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • Dear Sir.

I have a request, can you play something happy? Something you'd hear in a tavern while downing ale and mead

Thank you for the beautiful tunes too!

  • @FrancisHallelujah

Listen to some of my 567 videos, many are quite happy (pastyme in good compagny, Clement's squirell, the shoemaker's wife etc... make your choice ;-)

    Thanks

    Val

  • @FrancisHallelujah Music is beautiful, not sad or happy. Feel happy yourself, then ask someone simply to keep playing.

  • @jansonmorr I don't think so. It's been a fact that music affects the brain and the mood / mindset of someone. Even if I'm happy but listen to something upbeat, death metal, my whole mood will change.

  • no body can play lute such orients (especially Egyptians)

  • @Radio1515 It is the same family but not the same instrument, neither the same music ;-)

I love oriental lute too, but it is different.

    V.

  • i studied lute many years ago..........still my favorite music........

    thanks, corey

  • @coreyagraph

    Thanks ;-)

    Regards

    Val

  • Thank you so much for your beautiful playing!

I am currently learning lute on my own (as there are no teachers for this instrument close to me) and I have been trying to figure out correct right-hand position; Is it okay to use my pinkie-finger as a constant anchor (actually making contact with the instrument's body) or is it supposed to hover just over the wood at all times?

  • @katethegreat19

    Hello,

I put my little finger on the soundboard, but it is free to move if my hand move. ;-)

    Enjoy playing !

    All the best

    Val

  • I enjoyed it so much! is it possible to find the guitar scores for this piece?

  • @scowlge

The scores arranged for guitar are published by Mel Bay (Scottish lute music, Ronn McFarlane)

    Try on their web site.

    V.

  • wow, where did you learn to play? I might give it a try after learning the guitar.

  • @TheA340guy

I learn at the Toulouse dept of ancient music (Conservatoire) and in master classes with some great masters ;-)

    Good luck ond good music.

    Val

  • Very moving indeed!!!tell me,is it a baroque or a renaissance lute the one you are playing?...i think it is the latter....i am newly exposed to the world of the lute...

By the way i like your singning off ...it reflects prestige...

  • @diCeanddiMe757

It is a renaissance lute on this video ;-)

    Thanks

    Val

  • I was just looking for videos of people playing the lute after I heard that Robert Barto had played at a recent Leo Kottke concert and found this! This is great! I really liked both your playing and the song! Keep them comin'!

    -Zack

  • @Cartel232

Thank you very much ! Look for my playlist of scottish tunes if you like this one, you'll probably like the others ;-)

  • you are very good. Continue to make videos if you can =)

  • @ggbbeeddee

    Of course I will ;-)

    Val

  • Where can i get rare instruments like this. Musicians friend is very mainstream. I love the lute and other great sounding inst.

  • @Guitarstring187

Look on the net for 'lute society' you'll have all links and adresses you need... ;-)

    Good luck !

    Val

  • @Luthval i play guitar, bass mandolin and enjoy collecting ad learning stringed instruments. is there tab books or websites for the lute? im only 16 so i dont havealot of money so if u could suggest a cheap website thatd be preety cool

  • @njlacrosse9

Hi, thanks for the message, see my answer in PM...

    Val

  • @Guitarstring187 I wouldnt be too harsh on Musician's Friend, I've always had a rather enjoyable experience with them in the past. Of course you are right, they are a large company and not exactly a place to get a very intimate instrument, but their not a bad source for materials.

  • Beautiful piece Val!!

    Vicente

  • @Gealach74

Thanks a lot my friend ;-)

    V.

  • I think that this tune was written by Rory Dahl (c 1600) Blind Rory who lived in the Canongate, a stones throw from Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh.

  • @Auldguit1

    Maybe it is possible ? I don't know. ?

All the pieces in the Straloch Lute book are anonymous.

Any evidence of your thinking ?

  • Thanks for the response, I have found a luthier who makes Lutes, and I'm looking into joining the London Lute society, Jan Akkerman is the man who turned my ears to the lute after spending HOURS trying to decode his Carcassi Etude - thinking it was a guitar. Not sure which course lute to order - probably the same as Jan's - please check out Jan by entering in "Jan Akkerman on his lute" which lute is that?

  • @spacemanGoldie

I think Jan is playing a 7 or 8 course renaissance lute (what is needed to play Dowland for example) I play an 8 course (to have to extra basses for some English music).

  • How does playing the Lute compare with Guitar? Is it more difficult? Do you need to be able to read? Where would I start? I'm seriously interested in starting after 30 years of guitar and John Dowland is a personal favourite, this music is fabulous, is it available? Your playing is flawless

  • @spacemanGoldie

Going from guitar to lute is not so difficult, right hand is a bit different, because lute is most often plyed without nais (because of double strings) and we have more strings on the lute. Tuning is more difficult with wooden pegs. For a start, try to look on the net for the lute society of your country, where you can find all infos about lutes, playing, teachers and so... Music is in tabs.

    Good luck !

    Val

  • @Luthval about the theorbo, the tecnique change from the lute?

  • @Mr98giuliano

Not very much, but most of the theorboes have single strings (so it is easier for the right hand, but some work to find the extra basses on the theorbo. Also the theorbo have less repertoire than the lute itself.

  • i'm a classical guitarist and i think this would be amazing to learn after I complete my guitar studies!

  • @Iambillsjumbie

    Yes you should try ;-)

Good luck for your studies !

    Val

  • I'm more a fan of the Bouzouki than the Lute, but I still find your music music wonderful.

  • @MrBardTard

Same shape, same family, somehow different music from this two instrument ;-)

(I'm more fan of lute lol !)

    Val

  • Did you learn this on your own or from a book? And where would you buy one of these? (For a reasonable price xD)

  • @Azsharis

This music is in the Straloch Lute book.

(you can find a lot of music for lute on the net, search for "lute society"...

    Val ;-)

  • Dear Luthval, I am your fan :)

  • @folkatka

    Thanks a lot ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • Carry on dear Sir! Carry on playing this heavenly music!

  • @trepolinic

    Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • I'm 19 years old and would like to start playing the renaissance lute! How long have you been playing? Is it hard to learn?

  • My answer on your other comment ;-)

    Val

  • can't help but keep coming back to this, your play very good :)

  • Thanks !

    V.

  • yeah! all for the lute! FTW!!

    :3

olden day stuff gets the best of me... =w=

  • So is this like a 12 stringed guitar on a smaller scale with different gauge strings? (it actually looks like you have more strings, maybe 16?) Also, I find your technique rather strange, classical guitar (as I am sure you know) tilts the wrist differently and is played with nails.

  • It is quite different than 12 strings guitars (not the same tuning, not the same technic, not the same repertoire, and of course not the same shape. There is here only 15 strings (the top one is alone). The technic I'm using here is the correct technic for the lute, not classical guitar technic.

    All the best

    Val

  • I would like to see you pick up a lap dulcimer!

  • Sorry I don't know how to play this instrument ;-) (on day perhaps...)

    Regards

    Val

  • I really liked your music! You are really awesome! The lute's sound is amazing, and all these scottish and "medieval" songs you play are so amazing! Congratulations! Keep on playing! Mike

  • Thank you very much. Of course I'll keep on playing, as long as I could be able to ;-)

    Val

  • its really interesting to hear the tunes that people were listening to back in the day, to me its awesome that you can play it, that its still here ...anyway the beginning reminds me of lykke li-im good im gone, jus a bit lol

  • What type of lute is that?

  • It is a renaissance lute with 8 courses.

    Regards,

    Val

  • beautiful.

  • Thanks

    Val ;-)

  • switching over from guitar to lute, is it hard to pick up this instrument?

  • right hand is a little bit harder (double strings, no nail) but not so much !

    good luck !

    Val

  • How long did it take for you to learn how to play this well? To learn how to play in general?

  • Difficult to answer, I worked since a long time on scottish music... I start lute playing in 1980 (and was playing guitar before...) so...

    Best regards,

    Val

  • I have got a question- How can I get a lute like this? please answer

  • Im thinking of buying a lute. is it worth it?

  • What would you think if I said No ?

Are you a guitar player ? Just try (but it is an expensive instrument and difficult to play...)

    Good luck !

    Val

  • If you said no i would still look into it more. no im not a guitar player. Thank you for the info 5/5 stars

  • That was beautiful. as soon as i have the money, im going to buy a lute. Is it a lot different to playing the guitar?

  • Not so much, better to play double strings without nails, but you can with too... Left hand is the same, just right hand is more different (see my position)

    Regards

    Val

  • nice playing

i find it interesting how some *folk metal bands* can mix modern instruments with "ye olde" instruments

  • We always used old pots to make good soup...

    V.
