This is really interesting, though I've read about this in fictional books, I've never seen it before. It's so nice of you to share your past experience with us :)
@lukaluei Hi there, glad you liked my video. Not videos but I have a bunch of stories about growing up during the depression and into WW-II on my website that you might enjoy like the one about my first hunting trip in which I killed a deer with an axe. Go to JimForemandot com and click remembering,
My grade school was twenty years before you which was also during the depression. But you mentioned time travel. I wrote a book about just that, I was delivering a restored antique Piper Cub and it took me back into the time when it was made. It's on Amazon.com I also have a video introducing the book. It's called The Flight of the Temporal Cub
I was in TX grade school in the 50s, carried my lunch in a brown paper sack -- American cheese with mayo on white bread, some green grapes and 3 cents tied up in the corner of a hanky for a carton of milk ... the 30s are my favorite historical period, I would go there in a heartbeat if time travel were possible.
Yes, it's a raw onion but you have to remember that Texas is famous for their very mild onions like the 1015 and the Texas Sweets. But did you ever see a 5th grader who was worried about bad breath.
I am and I also fly airplanes. Check my other video on Startup of YAK-52. Not just riding around looking at the ground but doing what it does best; loops, rolls and wingovers. It was a real kick in the ass to fly.
Few people have any idea where the term, Lunch Pail, came from. We carried our lunches in small pails which served many other purposes. One pail heaping full of wild plums would make about one glass of sand plum jelly.... sure was good on Cowboy Biscuits.
My Great Aunt Ree had little pails like that on her farm. In the 1950s when we stayed over night, she would take us down the lane with those pails, and we picked wild strawberries. We would go in the house and she would serve them in little pink depression ware bowls, smothered in canned milk. It was only topped as my favorite by fresh peaches with canned milk in those adorable depression ware bowls. I would trade a Caribbean Cruise to go back in time to that farm of the fifties.

In the South it was most often a cold baked sweet potato and a biscuit or two, and a pint Mason jar of milk if you had it

Speaking of canned milk, that's the only way to make real country gravy. See my video, Country Gravy made the cowboy way.
