@PeterMayer Correct. They invested in the vari light technology with showco sound in order to make it happen. They were the first to have the prototypes and this was the first tour they were ever used.
I remember the 3-Sides Live album very well. All the kids who'd never heard of Genesis before were really floored by that Cinema Show jam section. Just that part was a high-volume favorite.
Genesis - always ahead of the game visually and musically. In 1981 weren't they the first band to use the now ubiquitous Varilites to put on such a dazzling show?
Their 2007 gigs set new standards again - simply awesome, and as usual the musicianship faultless. I only wish they'd used as much smoke in 2007 as they used to do in the 80's.
Yes. This is from that VHS. And, although EWF were the first with this type of light show, I'm not trying to take away anything from Genesis. They are also innovators in their own right. Genesis & EWF are heroes of mine. And, EWF were pretty amazing in concert between 74-81. In fact, there are quite a few classic EWF performances here on YouTube to be found.

I still want to know how Tony was able to play with all those lights flashing about. I'd be dizzy as crap. :)

love the lights in this concert. bathed in total blue, green or red. nice.
also note the bobo sneakers mike rutherford is wearing when they show the bass pedals. I had a pair of them! ah, the 80's. miss you

The ABACAB tour was the first use of Vari lights and I thought "what in the hell do these guys have for lights?" wow!

Even today the VL sequence at 1:00 is quite impressive. 28 years ago to have seen something like that must have been something else. Fantastic.

Yup. The mirrors in 78 was bigger and better to me.

I hate the way they piped, faded in and out the audience. No reason for that.

I prefer the Seconds Out arrangement of the Cinema Show instrumental, but oh, well, this is great too.

Cool. Wish I'd seen EW&F in concert back then!
Incidentally, is this video from the Three Sides Live VHS? Be good to see it released on DVD.

@greenmay As much as I love this tour the video quality and the camerawork of this show is some of the worst I have ever seen.
