I personally like Jimmy Farrar as he gave an edge/growl to MH that could have easily appealed to the heavy metal revival back then.
The big problem was the dishonesty from MH's management such as the take no prisoners recording that featured them as muscleman on the cover, when they had a number of beer bellys
@jbjester1 I got the joke as well, but others did not as I remember such dishonesty being a critique that resulted in the fine music on the recording being ignored because of this.
Sadly, similar fake Frazetta covers on subsequent MH recordings are also leading to this situation
@theStiggler You're a dangerous conclusion jumper. There was nothing stating in my comment that a I preferred Farrar, I just like the difference of his singing compared Brown and the reasons why.
Personally so called MH "Purist" may not agree with such opinions, but is not a idiotic thug who would "break your jaw" and risk going to jail in expressing such a disagreement
This is from American Bandstand, no doubt lipsynched, and to show how lack of knowledge Dick Clark's crew had about the band, they assummed the large crow at the back of the Beatin the Odds album cover was from a Molly Hatchet concert - no it was from a festival that MH was invited to play
Used to hang out with Jimmy Farrar's daughter in HS, I'm from Lagrange, GA also. The only notable musicians that town ever produced was Jimmy Farrar and Bubba Sparxxx....good thing we have Jimmy cause Bubba Sparxxx is fucking retarded.
molly hatchet 8 tracks were in my truck all through high school from 1979 to 1983...ha ha i saw this on Solid Gold the night it came out I always wanted a Hamer Explorer like Dave Hlubeck..! I loved his flame maple top explorer that one was awesome..! almost bought one used in a Guitar Center in Los Angeles back in the early 1990's but it got away..ha ha !
This looks to be from Solid Gold, late '80 or early '81. It's Jimmy Farrar on vocals. He sang on the Beatin' The Odds and Take No Prisoners albums in the early 80's. Saw this lineup live in Jan. '82, Jimmy did a good job. Those are both good albums.
I knew Molly hatchet , partied alot with danny Joe and David Hlubek . Danny died from Diabetes.there is a bar in Florida cant remember the name of it. But at the bar it has a sign that reads Danny joe Brown stood right here and did 30 straight shots of Wild Turkey !!!!!
Guys, a little help please? The lead singer of Molly Hatchet Flirting With Disaster singing is the same as singing Beatin 'The Odds. His voice is different if the same. I swear I heard a version of Beatin 'The Odds to "another voice". Excuse my ignorance, am new to the subject. Thanks.
@GustavoJCPirituba You are right, the original singer(on flirtin)was Danny Joe Brown,he left for awhile for health reasons(died in '05)I can't remember this singers name,
Love this sh*t man.....real good ole fashioned driving hard rock with a real Southern fried twist.......Love these guys, Blackfoot and Axe with Bobby Barth!!
Lots of people outthere consider Hatchet a "Southern Metal" band . . . not too far off the mark. Bands like them, Blackfoot, Axe, Nantucket, even Mother's Finest on some of their early '80s stuff are as close to metal as you can get without actually being metal.
Some bitch named "Victory?"in this tune? The same when a bitch is named "Destiny" by a fucking derelict daddy?By todays standards the bitch better have alot of money for any guy she wants to "hang" with that has real talent that is/has been ignored by alot of non-talent trash.
Okay, who wants to tell Dave that his shirt doesn't send the right message for this hillbilly metal known as Southern Rock? Floral print Hawaiian? I ain't going to tell him. He looks like he could get downright irritated with a careless word. Great memories. Dave made me want to pick up a guitar. He's just so dang cool. Even in the floral shirt.
This is great.Just wish the picture quality was better. Molly Hatchet`s first two albums with original singer Danny Joe Brown are always deemed their best, but this is from their third album with Jimmy Farrar on vocals.Jimmy wasnt too pretty, but the man sure could sing!!! Buy this album, its awesome. P.S. How cool is Duane Roland?
In case no one has posted this before - this is from Dick Clark's American Bandstand where almost everyone lip synched their songs.
I personally preferred Jimmy Farrar, and I would rather listen to him fronting Gator Country than with at least two original members than what is currently called Molly Hatchet with only Dave Hlubek left and no (RIP) Danny Joe Brown
P.S. I don't think they went down too well with AB's disco audience
@smscamp Fuck the disco DIRT.This band has more soul, sad to think some of the band members have died.Tells you why the vid still plays here for people to see.A hard/fast song with hard/fast instruments played with alot of HEART!!!
I don't think this band when down too well as the biggest
This song here proves that Molly Hatchet were the Heavy Metal of Southern Rock, much heavier than Blackfoot, although they are a great band too! Beatin' the Odds and next album Take No Prisoners basically stripped almost all southern ifluence and went all hard rock/metal direction. But I love almost every Molly Hatchet album
I remember watching this when it was first aired back in "81" on Solid Gold' this line up included all the original members except for Jimmy Farrar on vocals,DJB had his own band there for a while.
I liked the first album Hatchet did with this singer. He had some good slow ballads as well. Saw them in concert once in Jax. in '79 and later, in the band shell in Gainesville (blazing hot sun) in the summer of '83 I think. The singer came sometime afterward. Thanks for posting.
Dave Hlubek-Lead guitar. Steve Holland-rhythm guitar. Duane Roland-rhythm/lead guitar. Banner Thomas-bass guitar. Bruce Crump-drums. Jimmy Farrar-vocals.
@greeneyefull IMO Jimmy was the best replacement vocalist ANY band has ever picked. It's hard to replace a band icon like Danny Joe, but Jimmy did BETTER than GOOD. He fit the band almost like he started with 'em and that's RARE for a replacement.
@robzillafobia Its called AGING, and don't say he should exercise, he may have health problems that prevent it. I have REALLY bad hips and Knees and I'm just 44, and he's way older than me. I'm the same size as in middle school just because I got LUCKY with my metabolism, and I hope THAT don't change or I'll get big as a house, it's about all I can do to WORK much less exercise.
@bloodmoonblooz Must have been during the time he left MH, he was quite a good looking dude before.
haha i think my comment before sounded well harsh actually...there one of my favoirte bands Molly Hatchet, just really shocked when I saw dave Recently.
@robzillafobia The last time I saw MH live they all looked a little sad, played great though. I get shocked looking at most all my music "hero's" from back in the day.
I was so proud of my cousin Jimmy when he performed with M.H. I remember telling Jimmy that he had a pretty voice. He had a voice with a rough edge to it, but could have sang ballads very well.
Jimmy Farrar was a really good singer, he could be heard without a mic,his voice was huge, as his stature, I remember he played at gigs locally here with his band Raw Energy before he joined Molly Hatchet ,now I think he is still w/SRA not sure though
I gotta say...Jimmy is an awsome singer...he did a great job fillin in for DJB....those shoes are impossible to fill, but they continued to put out some awsome records.....God Bless the diehard Hatchet fans Helllllllllll yeaaaaaahhh!
Hlubek has said that from the beginning he considered Hatchet to be a metal band with a southern flair rather than a "southern rock" band. (that being the late '70s definition of "metal", when it was hard guitar rock, as opposed to what it devoloved into in the late 80s with hardcore bands like Metallica and embarrasing crap like Winger)
I went to the april 1980 show Vets Memorial Columbus-noone said that Danny Joe left and Jimmy was the lead singer- Dave went frickin off!!!! 8th grade. Great SHOW
i saw them at the miami baseball stadium in 1980, with heart and bob seger...they had to wait for danny to be flown in cause he was late for the first song, they started and kept going til he got there
sorry but you are wrong.... Danny Joe Brown. Left us on March 10 2005 and 6 days later. March 16 2005. We also lost Jakson Spires Drummer & Writter of the Blackfoot song's.....
Shame on me for thinking Flirtin' with Disaster was one of their only good songs! This kicks ass...plain & simple. I'm still not sure if I should call Molly Hatchet "southern rock", or maybe southern metal??? Either way...good shit!
I saw Molly Hatchet and the Outlaws in 1980. Molly Hatchet started the concert at 8pm and didn't finish playing until after midnight. Then the Outlaws came out and played for 2 hours. It was a great concert.
I have been a Molly Hatchet "connesuier" or fan since 78 when "dreams I'llnever see" hit the airwaves, and you hit it,I told a freind of mine they are the heavy meatel band of the southern rock era. But,I still can't figure out why Daany Joe left when he was of top of his game ,but he went back not too long after to make NO GUTS NO GLORY in 83 with M Hatchet.Killer lp with the song FALL OF THE PEACE MAKERS and it will bring a tear to your eye. Those guys had heart and soul
Another great Jacksonville FL. band: Blackfoot, 38. Special, Skynyrd. I got to see them all...those were the days...when southern rock would KICK YOUR ASS!
dave is living in port st lucie florida now, he is not in that good of health as he weighs adout 400 lbs,i knew him when i lived there, we jammed together a few times, he was my guitar hero growing up, but was a dissapointment when i met him in person :( just to arrogant, oh well i guess thats how it goes! keep on rockin!
I am glad that Im not partial to either one, My first memory of them was this song and I like both singers,I am partial to some like Bon Scott over Brian Johnson but as far as Hatchet both front men kick ass to me they are = !!!!
Great video! I remember seeing this on Solid Gold TV. Duane Roland, man what a rock star! Guy had the look. Jimmy sure did do a helluva job stepping in for the big fella Danny Joe. I saw this tour about 5 times, and the next tour in '81 about 5 more. Then Banner cut all his long hair off towards the end of '81.
Molly Hatchet ruled with Danny Joe Brown up at the front, It's not just the way he looked it was also the way he sang, whistled, moved, every inch of him was so SEXY!! (Hello from Mackenzie, B.C.) No one will ever replace Danny, I don't care what anyone says. It is not just about the way the instruments are played. It is the whole package that made Molly Hatchet who they were.
First of all with no Lynyrd Skynyrd there would have been no Molly Hatchet. Second, Molly Hatchet loved there Jacksonville brothers from Lynyrd Skynyrd so much they asked Ronnie Van Zant to produce an album for them. Let's not get carried away with an average song like "beatin the odds" and pronouncing these guys way better than Skynyrd.
Around 75/76 I remember Banner taking me to see the band he was in. went to the Castaways bar at the beach. I just got back from hawaii surfing and was blown away. so cool to see them on YT. we had some great times in jax then.
I'm sitting here reflecting on the past and trying to decide whom I like on vocals more, JF or DJB. I have come to the conclusion that I cannot label either of them better than the other. They both are fucking awesome and kick that sweet ass. I'm glad to hear the songs from both guys.
I personally like Jimmy Farrar as he gave an edge/growl to MH that could have easily appealed to the heavy metal revival back then.
The big problem was the dishonesty from MH's management such as the take no prisoners recording that featured them as muscleman on the cover, when they had a number of beer bellys

I dont care what they say, thes guys are way better than Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Around 75/76 I remember Banner taking me to see the band he was in. went to the Castaways bar at the beach. I just got back from hawaii surfing and was blown away. so cool to see them on YT. we had some great times in jax then.

I saw them in Indianapolis that same tour. A week later, I was in a guitar store in Jacksonville, and in walks Dave Hlubek himself. That was wild.

I'm sitting here reflecting on the past and trying to decide whom I like on vocals more, JF or DJB. I have come to the conclusion that I cannot label either of them better than the other. They both are fucking awesome and kick that sweet ass. I'm glad to hear the songs from both guys.
