@MikeInc79 Thanks for your comments Mike. It's always good to hear from someone with something sensible to say instead of idiots like the ScottishPEACEguy below. You make a very good point and as I note you are from Sweden you'll be even more aware of the need for well insulated homes. The main point I was making is that these Dundee tower blocks were only standing for around 35 to 40 years before demolition. The houses that they replaced in the 1960s had stood for over 100 years.
Great video, throughly enjoyed it. Multi's were up well before my generation (I was born in the early 90s) and never lived in any, but my mum used to live near Yeaman's and I've had some cracking stories and tales from both my parents and grandparents who did stay in them. Small shame they deteriorated in the way they did, they probably housed far more character than those daft, overpriced, clone like housing developments you see nowadays.
was just saying on other video about alaxander st multis. i wonder what they are going to build in their place. may i suggest high quality high rise flats, multis if you will, with stunning views over the city and tay estuary. just an idea.
@grazer770 I think you make a very good point. They did look a bit austere but I personally wouldn't have called them hideous like someone commented earlier. I remember them going up in 1966/67 and for hundreds of families back then they were a welcome escape from the crumbling old tenements that blighted Dundee back that had no indoor toilet or bath. The skyline could do with some high quality, well designed high rises.
@ScottishPEACEguy I'll sleep easy tonight knowing that Mr ScottishPeaceguy is still policing the internet looking for recalcitrant Youtubers and Facebookers who don't know the rules (sorry his rules) about posting photos and videos.
@ScottishPEACEguy You're right there are lots of weirdos on Facebook but I've also encountered them on Youtube. There's you, just to mention one and apart from being weird you seem to be on some big ego trip. Either that or your on drugs. Peace man? I think not!
@drumcoltran you do realize that you got your self into a state because i pointed out the fact that youtube is for videos and not slide showes, your video is a disapontment to youtube users, we click to see a cool VIDEO of some buildings blow up, then we get a damn slide show, then we get the confused owner of THAT telling you that "you think your right all the time" and unrelated remarks about the spelling, changing the subject sudenly, ARE YOU FUCKING PREGNANT? ON THE RAG? OR JUST A LONLY COW?
They are demolished because the Great British Isles is here now only for one thing and thats Real Estate! These Islands now thanks to China and India have no worth other than the Rich wanting to live here like Guensey and Jersey are places for the old English to go to once millionairdom is reached! Scotland and Wales Espcially have nothing to offer and once the Lower classes are got rid of then the Country whether it reaches independence or not will be a better place!!!
think that it is a totall waste demolishing the alexander street and derby street multis when dundee city council are keeping the crime and junkie ridden dallfield multis up when the alexander and derby street multis are far better and the house inside them are far better as they are all maisonnets rather than flats that is the real reason they are being demolished because they are too costly to maintain because they are bigger houses a totall disgrace peoples homes and memories destroyed
@louisestirton I totally agree with you Louise. If Dundee council had been a responsible landlord they would have kept a check on the tenancies and prevented the rot setting in. I was up in Dundee last Sunday and it was sad to see the multis come crashing down. I never lived in them but you're right. People's memories gone and they only lasted just over 40 years. That's no time at all.
@ScottishPEACEguy Who are you to decide that Youtube is for videos and Facebook for pictures? They've both got loads of both and anyway nobody forces you to watch anything you don't want to. While you're at it you should have a change of name too as you don't sound very peaceful.
@drumcoltran i dont sound peace full? please show me your logic, based on my comment. common you went to a demolition with a camera? why not a video camera? puting a slide show on here is like fuckin a burd fae dundee, a let down.
@ScottishPEACEguy The last comment you made about fuckin a burd fae dundee sums you up and confirms to me what I said about you. I'm not into 'my channel is better than yours' crap that you are into. The clip you are on about was a serious point about social housing provision in Dundee or maybe you just missed that. Some people have been able to disagree with me without being abusive. I quite like Paulo Nuttini but think the cartoons you've posted are dreary. That's life get over yourself.
Instead of complaining about how badly it turned out, I wonder if anyone in Dundee is reading about WHY high-density high-rises will always turn into crime-ridden slums. Try looking up Defensible_Space_Theory on Wikipedia and build them correctly next time or repeat history!
Derby St had white roughcast from new but in the mid 80's there was a large project undertaken to remove it hence the change in colour in later photos.
I think it isn't so much to do with the maintenance so much as a change in styling for thew city. The council it looking towards the future and by removing the high-rises they are doing this. Dundee is a city which is dominated by the law, why now use that as the skyline when approaching the city rather than the block of 1960/70's concrete jungles?
I think that it is a totall waste demolishing the alexander street and derby street multis when dundee city council are keeping the crime and junkie ridden dallfield multis up when the alexander and derby street multis are far better and the house inside them are far better as they are all maisonnets rather than flats that is the real reason they are being demolished because they are too costly to maintain because they are bigger houses a totall disgrace peoples homes and memories destroyed
@louisestirton I totally agree with you Louise. It's a criminal waste and I've heard lots of talk of junkies and crack heads who've blighted the lives of other tenants, but the people to blame are the Dundee authorities who over the years have not looked after their properties and who didn't make sure that the people who were allocated the flats were made to be responsible for them. The city council are guilty of mismanagement for not dealing effectively with the anti social people. Derek
I think the problem is that you can't stack people vertically in concrete boxes and expect them to thrive. Earlier (1920s, 1930s, 1940s) social housing, in four-in-block cottages with gardens, were based on a much more promising idea - that ordinary people should have a decent HOME, not just a "dwelling unit" in the sky.
Its shame some of the multis in dundee are coming away..the skyline will look alot differant..But all the same a waste..especially the Ardler multis..there was also the Claverhouse ones too that where taken down...I could be wrong but i;m sure the derby street multis had sort of cladding hence the white/black stripe then back to red brickwork you see now.....
I totally forgot about the Whorterbank ones, when did they come down? And how come the ones at Derby Street look a kind of white colour 0:36 then look red brick? 0:26
@raymond904 I'm sure there are no plans to demolish the Wharterbank Multis. As far as I can gather, they will be kept as I mentioned in my description. I recently read that of the 56 original multis that were built in Dundee, there are roughly only half remaining and that the Alexander Street multis may well be gone by May of this year and soon after that, the Derby Street towers. I also thought it odd that the 2 pictures of those flats could be so different in colour. I sourced them on the net.
i lived in maxwelltown multi for 6 years and never had any problems in, or with them, it was good, spoke to the neighbours but could also keep yourself to yourself, they due down soon this year, at a critical part of the dundee skyline..
I agree. I don't like the way the skyline is disappearing at an alarming rate to make way for boring poor quality low rise "modern" housing or simply empty spaces no longer in use.
Often it's more efficient to demolish eldery mass produced houses of pre-fab and build new more energy efficient which can achieve modern standard.
