Torturing myself: I couldn't get tickets to Teenage Fanclub this week in Sao Paulo (sold out concert in less than 24 hours!!), now I'm looking for live videos... :-(
I totally missed these guys 15 years ago: what the F*** was I thinking? What a waste of my teenage years! Mind you I was listening to Cast at the time, so I'll let myself off! The more I find out about these guys, the more I like. Anyone got a spare ticket fro the Paris gig in November?
Better then the Byrds! Fantastic days and music and such good times. White Room was a brilliant show back then with some great bands. Don't know why it was ever axed so quick.
This song always reminded me of TFC! God they really do it well. Now I think about it I'm not at all surprised that they like The Byrds, you can really hear the influence.
@mcs1hr that's a question i'd like to know the answer for, specially knowing that the music TFC does is very "accessible", in terms of listening... maybe TOO "accessible"... who knows?! their albums are excellent, and their b-sides always impressionate... my favorite band!
I've read that due to the fact that they love Big Star and The byrds, they were at one point going to be called The Big Byrds, but they were slapped with an injunciton by Jim Henson.
I've also read that they were once going to be called the Whom?
I saw them cover Mr Tambourine Man at Reading Festival in '92 on a freezing wet Sunday afternoon. I think Nirvana had chosen the main stage bill for that day because they were headlining. TFC really cheered me up that miserable day.
What a song, what a band (the byrds i mean) and a great cover by a good band!
I remember i used to go to the late but great Wag on Wardour St on thursday nights and always request this from the benevolent poor dj Spencer, who always did play it eventually. Happy days.
Anyone else remember this being played upstairs at the Wag thursdays circa 1997-98?..
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for posting. Just heard the Byrds version on the radio and remembered this version. One quick search and here it is. I also remember the Fannies used to cover the Beatles' Rain around this time. Sadly I don't think there are any recordings of this.
Man, this takes me back. Yeah Browboy, they used to cover Rain and they also used to close the set with a 15 min cover of the Yo La Tengo instrumental, I Heard You Looking. Would kill for some live footage of the Fannies circa 96/97....good times.
Damn, I remember watching this when it was on. A top, top cover by a great band (and an amazing song). I miss The White Room though, miles better than Jools bleedin' Holland.
Agreed! I still have some remnants of the White Room scattered through a variety of increasingly lessly played videos from the 1990's. Some cracking stuff in there, enhanced by Mark Radcliffe's humour and presentential skills. Can't help feeling that these videos are now the 2000-thingy's equivalent of playing 78's in the 1970's. Which you clearly didn't. Oh dear.
Man, I have a MP3 of the Fannies doing Fell a Whole Lot Better for years. It's from a radio program and it's completely acostic. Never though I could see a video from an electric version. Great Great Great!!!
This is good....I think I prefer the Tom Petty version meself.

Fantastic. Great powerpop song covered by a great powerpop band. Now, whatever happened to the girl in the black singlet top down the front?

met these guys a few years ago. Great bunch and the MOST underrated band of all time.

This is quite simply the best British band since the Smiths.
Astonishing live, their albums are all classics and their singles always have first class b-sides. Why on earth aren't they squintillionaires?

Amazing Fannies! Have you heard their cover of the Beatles 'Tell Me What You See'? Definitely one of the greatest Beatles covers ever.

Excellent version of a great song which was released as the B side of "All I Really Want To Do" and thus failed to be a deserved hit.
