This is amazing; at times it sounds like a different soprano but it is clearly Kiri Te Kanawa; probably a young Kiri (her voice was more energetic and vibrant in the 1970's) In the 80's and 90's, her voice tended to become a tad too sedate and elegantly mannered and controlled. I love Kiri but it's rare to find her in spirited voice like this. The conducting of this Alleluja is very fast and bouncy....love it...her coloratura and trill is excellent.
I saw here in Boston last year (or was it '07?) on her farewell tour. She was wonderful. The voice was exquisite and she looked more beautiful than ever.
Hello musicyh and kachzvi18, I always enjoy the thoughtful comments you make on Dame Kiri's artistry. I have a simple question: do you think that her training in church music with Sister Leo enhanced her opera singing? Given that many opera singers nowadays lack training in church music would their technique be adversely affected?
And happy birthday to Dame Kiri (in 3 days?) May she have many more happy returns and give more recitals. We all owe so much to her!
IMHO, I think her training in church music probably taught her to sing for the joy of it instead of singing to serve one's ego. That probably contributes to her humble attitude despite the media putting her on a pedastal. But I don't think a lack of church music training would do anything major to technique - the basics are the same regardless of what you sing.
Yes, happy (early) birthday to Kiri! I'm singing in a concert the day after that (7 Mar), and I'll think of her while I'm on stage!
Many thanks for your answer. Best wishes to your performance in the concert. You play in the orchestra (what instrument?) and you are also a singer: wow!
piano. I only got to play in the orchestra because they needed a keyboardist/pianist for some items. So I was on the celesta for Dame Kiri's "Depuis le jour" and "Marietta's Lied", and on the piano for some other pieces (including one of Kiri's encore songs).
ehasl, perhaps one day you'll look like 55, too. How would you feel if someone tells you that they are shocked to see you look so old. Check out the Youtube clips on recent interviews with Kiri, The Spirit of Arts - Kiri te Kanawa - Passion for life; and judge for yourself whether Kiri looks her age - 62 at that time. As she grows older, she seems to me to be more serenely beautiful, though she is full of zest and her singing is still beautiful.
I agree. She still has those beautiful deep brown eyes, and her singing is still as close to perfection as you can get given her age. I just did a concert with Kiri (I was part of the orchestra) in Oct 2008, and she's still beautiful - at 64. I could never forget looking directly into those eyes and seeing the zest and warmth in there.
Thanks again for posting Dame Kiri's Laudamus te from Mozart's Mass in C minor (at another site). Whenever I feel down I only need to click on that clip & listen to it; then I'll be ready to work again in front of the computer! (I also like her Laudate Dominum, probably from the same cd as this clip from Exsultate Jubilate. I have a question for you and musicyh, probably appearing in a separate comment.

It's a very very young Kiri! About 27 years of age at that time, if I'm not wrong.
