Silicon is a semi-likely candidate for another basis of life. Showcasing my geekiness, I remember an episode of the original Star Trek where they encounter a species based on silicon. It can bond with itself many times over like carbon and is stable but reacts readily. Just some food for thought.
Sagan would have been flabbergasted by the discovery of arsenic-based life here on Earth. Total game-changer.
