Uh...just a quick note...cold packs can either contain ammonium NITRATE or urea...first of which releases carcinogenic gases like dinitrogen monoxide nitrogen dioxide or nitrogen monoxide...and urea is highly found in urine...so it'll smell like it!...just quickly adding a note!

Ammonium nitrate is dangerous, yes, but nowhere near a high explosive. It's an oxidizer. And as far as I can see, the only thing in there which has any fuel is the plastic bag. Besides, once that water bag in the middle bursts, you're gonna have wet oxidizer which isn't gonna be very effective. The only way one of these things could be dangerous is if you opened it up, scooped out the NH4NO3 and put it in a beaker full of gasoline and aluminum foil. Which is a retarded idea without the NH4.

No no Sodium acetate is in hot packs not cold packs..

I would not experiment with microwaving high explosives like ammonium nitrate which is the main ingredient in those instant cold packs. Microwave ovens are not very well understood but I could imagine the radio waves sparking a plasma and detonation of the entire mass, leaving you deaf if not dead.
