I use Cablevision Ultra and it it says 101 down and 15 up but i get 68MB low to 98MB high and around 60 Avg so your getting ripped of if they say your getting 100MB you should atleast get 60 something MB or higher. I would report it. I am now moving on to Verizon at 150MBs down and 20 up hopefully i get the speeds they say i should

wow what an internet. i actually came here to ask why, even though my speed test tells me i am downloading 9.5 meg a second, i am really downloading little over a meg a second. i am optic fibre, living in a big city and i feel cheated. i really want good download speeds as it is what i bought an optic fibre broadband for. Mb/s is actually megabits per second and i have read there are 8 bits to a byte. this sounds about right as the top speed i have downloaded at is 1.2 MB/s. still sounds a bit low considering i have fibre optic and up to 10 meg internet. does up to 10 meg broadband mean i am capped to 10mb/s or 10 MB/s? thanks for the help by the way.

@allypezz A simple rule of thumb is to divide the quoted speed by 9 to get it in MB/s (As in a song is 5MBs). 10MBit = 1.1-1.2MB/s.

@allypezz While you can buy 10/20MBit your speed will ultimately depend on your line and its distance from your phone exchange. If you're reaching 2MB/s speeds without Fibre Optic then chances are you're pretty close to your exchange, the reason your Virgin connection is limited is due to the package you're on. You'll have to upgrade to their higher plans to take advantage of the superior speeds. Also look into BT Infinity/FTTC provider if it's available. An excellent alternative.

FAiber Optic IS the way to go. I just went from 3 mbps down with basic DSL to around 14 mbps down with fiber optic, I got the lowest package & for me that's fast enough, the highest package offered here I believe is the 100 mbps down. I even paid MORE with basic DSL & now I pay less for a faster speed, went from $60/ mo. to only $40/mo, I don';t know why more people don't look into fiber optics.
