As much as I love this quartet, I don't particularly like this performance. It feels a little too emotionless. Like a bunch of stuffy old men playing with the metronome too loud. This is just personal opinion, but I think that this quartet should be *performed,* not simply played.
I'm not denying the talent of the individual players, because it's obvious that they are extremely talented. I just don't like this interpretation of it.
@HanKyeolYoon I never said that. Shosti happens to be one of my favorite composers. I'm not so much into the romantic stuff. I do believe that while Shosti does require a bit more of a rigid metering than other pieces, that it still can have an essence of humanity about it, and personality; fire, even. I, personally, do not feel that in this performance.
i have a cd of the Emerson quintet playing this(it's a cd of all the shosty quartets)obviously the sound quality was much better, but i liked their energy as well.
can anybody recommend some composers if i like this type of style and ensemble of music?
Actually I think this is a bit lifeless... It seems just a little bit lethargic and uninspired. There is so much more in the music that could draw you in that's not there on this recording.
Wow, I really like this . . . sometimes this movement gets a little messy because of all the funky accidentals and changing bow styles, but they have great control of it. And their tempo changes are really well done, even if I would have done a couple differently. Of course, I'm an amateur!
underappreciated

@bpertz Do you wanna hear some sort of romantic performance with lots of rubatos? Then, I recommend you not to hear Shostakovich's pieces.

@bpertz check them out in their prime... i agree that the synapses aren't firing as passionately in this performance.

Béla Bartók.
His complete quartets are available by the Emerson Quartet.

It does sound rather like Shostakovich turned into harmless after dinner entertainment.
Gentlemen, you may smoke :)

I saw I posted a comment two months ago, but I absolutely disagree with my opinion then (why did I said that???!)
I totally agree with you, isaacspookytac. You should try the recording of the Jerusalem Quartet (EMI), it's fantastic.
This one is, in my opinion, too slow and the recording technique isn't really good too.

For this piece's debut, Shostakovitch renamed it "Blithe ignorance of the future cataclysm"
