Also, even after watering with 5 gallons, I seem to be able to put my hand in the side of the planter all the way to nearly the bottom, and it comes out dry. Im nervous! My plant is already in there and I don't want to ruin it. Cost me 16 bucks! LOL...Also, I have several big holes on the bottom of my barrel I drilled, and have it up on bricks for drainage. The only worry I have is with the peat!
I used Canadian Peat Moss, but it was totally brown. No white perlite or stuff in it. It also seems retract the water. I do have the 9 month time release fertilizer in there, and I also doubled up with the Miracle Gro water soluable mix, and I planted my Million Bells as you did. I am just worried about the peat not being so absorbant. Ido also have polymer crystals towards the bottom.
Very heathy roots in the hanging basket, but you're going to want to consider breaking them up if they're extremely compacted.
If your new transplant is going to be somewhere hot and dry, wait a couple of day before cutting the plants back.
If your planter already contains a time release fertilizer, it is not necessary to add additional miracle grow. Especially not doubling. You'll be sending most of the fertilizer out the bottom of the planter.

A few things to consider...
