  • Great sound but your bassdrum seems to distort a little

  • if you can, i think u should mic the steel snare. it just doesn't sound good with the overhead mics, but that's just my opinion, and maybe u should tune it a little higher.

  • Damn that's freaking groovie!

btw. ist this groove at 1:12 ist this "Icarus Lives" bei Perypherie?

  • The grooves at 5:00 sound like Danny Carey grooves. Sounds like Tool's "Vicarious". :P (Came to the conclusion, also, because of you turning your snares off... Like Danny Carey does) But if it's just a coincidence; let me recommend some Tool (especially Vicarious) That'd be a REAL challenge for you. And would improve your all-around playing. Although you're fucking amazing enough!

  • @PushitDrummer That's Vicarious alright :). I love Tool, especially Vicarious haha. I performed Vicarious with my ensemble at Berklee last fall, although I've never gotten around to making a drum cover of that song... yet...

  • I just want him to smile man cmon!

  • 1:11 Icarus Lives!

  • Please do a video on your recording software set up, mix, EQ settings etc. This is the best sounding mix of drums i have ever heard.

  • You should do some Tool covers and then I hear this

  • I was just thinking,

  • 4:48 Vicarious :)

  • Bro how did you get your snare, bass and Tom toms to sound so beautiful

  • 1:50 - Mike Johnston's "Pepamint" groove, right? :P

  • this is what you call the "Steven Chen quality" and nice shirt by the way

  • 3.17 . . . head started to bop and it was literally beyond my control! Great shuffle groove man :)

  • @ben13drummer none :)

  • epic finish haha

  • 1:11 Icarus Lives, am I right? :D awesome vid

  • 5:20 , Tool - Vicarios ??.

    Am I right ?

  • ICARUS LIVES

  • feelin some periphery at 1:10, and you taught us that groove at 3:00 in a jam session haha

  • sell samples of your kit man

  • 2:32 is PUSE SEX ^^

srsly, this depth and power is freaking mind blowing, epic work Steven ;) good luck 2 u in progressing

  • what periphery song do you play in the video?

  • Since Christmas is coming up, I really think you should cover Carol of the Bells- August Burns Red

  • nice! rocken the icarus lives - periphery beat :P love love love it hahaha

  • that just ranked as one of the best recorded drum sounds I've ever heard, if I can sit here and just enjoy any type of beat, groove, fill, etc being played on that kit no matter if i actually like it, then you have succeeded in making a damn good sound. Can't wait to hear this in covers man! and I've been watching since almost the very beginning too, keep it up!

  • one of the sounds i like is the stack. very dark and trashy. i used to like mid - bright stacks, but after hearing this, i maybe reconsidering that and going with this.

  • i wish i have ur life haha

  • first beat sounds a lot like benny greb influence man! nice! by the way, can you tell me to what tension do you tune your toms because I've seen you use a drum dial before and if you tune the reso head higher??

  • @pescalante2 You're right! That first snippet was inspired by the first beat after the intro of Benny's "just groovin" video. He is by far one of my FAVORITE drummers out there!

And I do tune my resonant side higher than the batter, but I could not tell you the exact numbers (i cant remember). For toms I normally start with 73 on the batter and 76 on the reso and tweak the drum from there as my ear likes it!

  • dude ur awesome! please put up a tutorial for sum of your fills!

  • SICK CHINA bro!

  • The tuning is absolutely fantastic, really. The snare is amazing also. But you really need to muffle your drum ( except the snare ). I mean, for a concert that's great, why not for a drum solo, but if you want to play covers or such with that sound we're gonna hear your drums too much.

  • Awesome Drumming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what size is the rack tom?!?!?! please answer

  • Really awesome.! But dude,... tune that middle tom! It sounds like shit, sorry to say:(

  • Amazing sound, so much presence, so much body, but i feel like it would be too boomy for an actual mix to a song(not the snare, that pretty much reminds me of jesus)

  • I just came.

  • @never3818 Can you teach the Hi hat Shuffle @3:24? Lesson please? :)

  • 2 questions:

    a) why no overhead angle?

    b) the description says your using your flying dragons, but what happened to your 9000's?

and also, these drums sound GREAT

  • @ab4foot11 heya. a) because in order to get the overhead angle to work... i have to climb a ladder. i was too lazy too for just a sound check >_< it will be there for the next videos though! b) i like the flying dragons more than the 9000's - they're just more suited to my playing and were a ton cheaper too haha

  • @never3818 Can you do a DragonForce cover please :)

  • @never3818 so did you like sell your 9000s or do you just keep em full time on your luddys?

  • Could you tell me what sofware do you use to produce the video, and what camera you use, BTW awesome sound test.

  • THAT KICK!

  • i really like the sound of them:)

  • 1:11 Icarus lives! =)

  • Can you teach me how to mix like that?

  • The 16" sounds like it can go on forevvvvvverrrrrr.

  • Very, very nice!

  • Whatttt a kick!!! Great, great sound, man. Awesome chops too! :) .

  • 1:10 - 1:32 Icarus Lives

  • I like the sound

  • That stack is pretty much the most beautiful thing ever. Did I catch Icarus Lives in there? Definitely a little Halpern-inspired grooving at least :3

  • dat high tom sound.

  • awesome sound!

  • dude your a rocking drummer but these drums sound wayyyyyyy to over produced. In all honesty i have no idea how the drums really sound.

  • @drumlover39 Compared to my all of older videos, I actually literally used only a fourth of the effects I used to have to use to get a sound this crisp! This is just my first mix with these drums though, and I had a processed rock sound in mind as my goal. I'll upload a few different, more "natural" mixes in the future so you can hear how they sound with almost no effects! Dave Weckl's official Yamaha demo of the PHX was made to sound very natural though, check it out!
