...What comes to mind in listening to Mr. Gladwell, is how does what he postulates affect the practice of "blindfold" testing/comparisons..? How come we don't see more data utilizing this method..? Is it because it obviates the inclusion of the "immediate" subconscious minds' contribution towards a conclusion..? I would be curious, having read Malcolm's book , as to how he would factor in the kinds of data that blindfold testing would introduce into the equation.
@pismo10 Canadians don't pay anything for health care. I'm pretty sure it costs money for surgery if you don't have health insurance in the USA ? Canadians think of health care on a national basis that we are all in this together, and the Americans with health care insurance think about the quality instead of their neighbor. From what I've heard, Canada has mediocre health care for everyone. USA has excellent health care if you have insurance. More MRI machine's etc.
@WestCoastPCbuilder "Canadians don't pay anything for health care" That's a good one. You cannot possible believe that statement. It is all magically free I guess in Canada.
Once again I will say as an American Dr., 100% of Americans have ready access to any health care including surgery.
@pismo10 Yes, but many of them have to re-finance their homes or take out huge loans or declare bankruptcy. Our taxes pay for our health care so we all share the burden equally. USA is far behind more progressive countries in this regard.
@WestCoastPCbuilder If you consider the govt running everything to be a step up, then the US is behind the socialist countries. I (and 5000 years of history) consider govt operation of things a huge step down so the US is ahead of socialist countries in most regards. The socialist aspects of America is what is destroying it, endless welfare has bankrupt America totally.
I have no idea who this man is. I have yet to read his books. I can say that his logic and understanding is quite refreshing. I'm buying this book, definitely. Thank you so much for this video.
I read the book and it has changed my life i was on a road to no where and after i read his book it has made me think in so many ways. good book Better Author.
Fantastic interviewer.. intelligent but not trying to 'compete', doesn't seem fake, no cheesy smarmy shit... compare this with Robert Krulwich interviewing MG at the 92nd Street Y..
Great interviewer, by the way! Knows what to ask, when to talk and when to listen... I've watched several M.Gladwell's interviews, this is one of the best. Enjoyed it very much.
In other words, he is not bragging that he changed the police, he is reporting on how police departments have changed themselves. This is neither liberal nor conservative. Simply describing a change in police procedure and the rationale behind it has no political bias.
@controversyking This is probably a waste of time, but Gladwell does NOT contradict himself regarding police attitudes. He, cites examples how how PDs in the US use the awareness of those attitudes to alter the way the police patrol the streets, the way they approach vehicles that they pull over, etc. He has not told the police what to do to change he is reporting on what police departments have done successfully to decrease police mistakes. In fact, at 19:09 he paraphrases you on hardwiring.
@controversyking Elaborate on that a little bit. You seem to be going in an interesting direction. I know it's kinda tough since youtube only allows so many characters, but keep going. There's lots of confusion and nonsense out there around political philosophies and their meanings. So just to be clear, how would you define "liberal" ? Remarkably everyone has a different definition.
I think being aware that there is no such thing as an "unconscious". It seems that people are using that word a whole bunch yet they are unaware (irony) that what they're calling the "unconscious" is a process not a thing. Just my two cents . . .. .
This is my first time hearing Mr. Gladwell. I like his thoughts about decision making. I will pick up his book Blink.

My girlfriend, who I showed this interview to, was reminded of the classic movie 12 angry men with Henry Fonda.

Given that 100% of Americans have simple access to health care I find his point very biased.
