  • Response to Gazster24. I certainly did not mean to imply that Sir harry was only a singer. His programs, "Highways" were full of social commentary, spiritual belief and intense caring for mankind. That's why I believe everyone would benefit from seeing him again.

  • I think this is the closest we will hear to how the song should be sang by a bloke. Chaplin would have loved to sing this song but apart from Petula Clark, Harry Secombe nails this song on his behalf...

  • What a voice.

  • Wonderful just wonderful.

  • C EST MAGNIFIQUE

MAGNIFIQUE. Merci à mon ami pour m'avoir porté jusqu'ici. Merci pour l'ajout YT!!

    Nathalie

  • I can never hear this song without shedding a tear. It holds a special place in my heart....It always will...

  • Yeah way to go Harry :)))

  • sadly missed loved highway

  • @gazster24 The world awaits someone who could gather the tapes of Sir Harry's series "Highway". What a joy and blessing that would be for mankind!

  • @marjantique May I recommend that you read Spike Milligans 'war trilogy', starting with 'Hitler, my part in his downfall', and ending with 'Where have all the bullets gone'.

Milligan was a friend and colleague of Secombe, from the days when both were 'Royal Artillery' gunners.

Secombe was much more than jut a singer, just as Milligan was so much more that just a comedian.

  • What a voice second to none, my mother loved him

  • Absolutely amazing!

God simply has the very best ..

  • He was hilarious as one of the GOONS on Blue bottle Blues ...with Peter Sellers

  • to hear u say i love u what a song what a singer hes up there with the best of them

  • What a fantastic voice, sadly missed. This song always takes me back. And always brings a tear,

  • @russman907 so true i just love his voice

  • He was one of my Mam`s Fav`s ( along with Lanza, David Whitfield oh the list goes on lol) must say i liked him too

  • What a powerful and rich voice he has. Imagine a duet between him and Judith Durham.

  • Its difficult to believe , Harry's be gone for 9 years. What a beautiful voice.

  • Sir Harry Secombe - one of the all-time greats. Daft, dippy, and with a voice like no other. Italians? Listen to a Welsh voice and hear REAl music!

  • Fantastic. My mum and dads favourite, bless them. Awesome

  • My mum and dad's favourite. Bless their souls. Awesome

  • it's amazing that he was so famous as a great comic actor yet he was was also a great tenor. How did we all miss that one. What a talent.

  • excellent song

  • I liked Sir Harry very much. He inspired many in the 80s. Big voice even bigger heart. RIP Harry Seacombe...

  • Have always liked this song. Thanks for posting

    frank

  • May God bless the dear person who first introduced me to Harry's amazing voice. RIP Harry. Your wonderful music...your wit...and amazing antics will live on in so many hearts forever.

  • This song has such special significance in my heart. Why is my heat so light?...Why are the stars so bright? .I care not what the world may say--- without your love..there is no day." "This is my song," is beyond beautiful

  • It took me years to realize that the voice of Neddy Seagoon was capable of really fine singing. Secombe is sometimes the forgotten "Goon Show" star, eclipsed by his two mad partners in most listener - fans minds. But he was as important as they were. And I don't recall either Sellers or Milligan ever singing a titlle as well as Harry did.

  • Very good performance. Great!

  • AWSOME MAN................

  • i used to play his records on my granda's orange binatone record player plus all his old opera records, since then i've been hooked on classical singers. I mean folk that can really sing

  • no one sang this song like harry.what alovely voice.he gives me goosebumps. god bless you harry for leaving us with lovely memories

  • Harry nails it! and bangs out the last notes perfect!

  • We only knew him as a comic actor here in the States. Turns out, he certainly could've held his own with anyone on the operatic stage!

  • Dear mikevalesenior.....try under "I'll walk with God", not "I walk with God". This is the actual title of this song.

I have it, as I do most of his songs. I think some of his best were his duets with Moira Rose. I suspicion she was actually his wife.

  • Hi csereix, fantastic song, and yes you have something for everyone on your channel! I enjoyed very much. Thanks for the sub and invitation - I subed and joined you as a friend. Have a great evening.

John from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Hello friend, there i have said it . Your NEW friend David.

  • What a performance, it gave me the shivers. Thanks for posting this video.

  • I never knew Charlie Chaplin wrote this....It is moving beyond words.. simply beautiful I am sitting here crying..my heart out.

Love cannot be wrong..if in the world there is you...There is no DAY without you...

This exquisite song has very special significance for me in my life. Thank you to a dear friend for sharing.

  • i'd love to be have ben that friend, you sound such a sincere, beautiful person, and i say, why are the stars so bright

  • Great, great, great. Sung with such heartfelt soul and bravado. Right up there with Petula's version, but her's is the best and no one can take it away from dear Petula.

  • @dnash27 respect your opinion, but I think Harry's better, but love both

  • I walk with God was a best for me but you know i cant find it with him singing it he did sing it in a show walk with GOD

  • WONDERFUL

  • I was 10/11 when my mother swooned when this was played on the radio, iloved seeing her so happy, what a lovely man, such a voice.50 yrs on i think of those days.

  • Composed by Charlie Chaplin? Charlie Chaplin the actor? I did not know he composed songs, was surprised. I remember Harry singing this song and listening to it on the radio. So good! Thank you for posting.

  • Yes indeed, Chaplin the actor. He also wrote the song "Smile". It was the theme song for his last silent film "Modern Times" in 1936. In the 50s two lyricists put words to it and it became a big hit for Nat King Cole. "Smile though your heart is aching Smile even though its breaking....."

  • Well, thank you for that information

tv4now. I learned something today, had no idea Charlie was talented like that. Those are two very good songs. Did he write others?

  • you should read up on Chaplin, he was not declaired a genius for nothing, he did more than invent comedy

  • funny you should say that redredreds100! :) After I wrote that last letter I thought "I should look Charlie up on the net:". Fascinating, absolutely fascinating. Charlie Chaplin was so much more than a silent movie actor. I had no idea. I am truly impressed.

  • yes, he was an amzzing man, if you ever sit down and watch his movies, "The Gold Rush" "City Lights" these are classic movies, ask any comedian from jerry lewis to will ferrer, who was the greatest influence, they'll all say chaplin. and he composed the majority of the music in his films, this famous one as pointed out by tvfor now, smile. YT is not just about the videos, it's a great learning experience also.

  • I may be wrong, but Im nearly sure Chaplin penned the Disney theme song, When you Wish Upon A Star

  • And indeed I AM wrong :))) I actually meant Smile, not Wish Upon A Star :))

  • yes chizzywoo, i looked up the song on the 'net. but it would not have surprised me, Charlie Chaplin was sure a talented man. And so, so cool, that through his mother, he was Romani, omg i love that, so exciting.

  • im 56 now,but it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up on family favourites as a chid on radio 2,wonderfull.

  • try nessun dorma by harry secombe

  • I'm 54, and I have discovered the BBC network of radio stations, when I was living at home, there was only radio 1, 2, 3 & 4, it's great to have radio 4 back in my life, after 25 years away. I went to radio two, and never heard "what's the recipe today jim" hahaha

  • Harry grew up with my fathers brother over in Port Tennant in Swansea and they were always over in each others house. Harry remained a close friend of the family even when he was famous. Never any scandal with old Harry, a true family man and one of Swansea finest, sorely missed by all.

  • a truly great man and a great voice , reminds me of my dear granparents singing to this when i was young .

  • god bless him what a voice

  • In 1966 I was an RAF Police Dog Handler in Aden ~ the AFBA studios were alongside the Dog Section and billets . Sir Harry was visiting the studios and made an effort to speak to all of us that were around at the time .

A really marvellous voice that was never truly appreciated .

The World is a sadder place for his passing . R.I.P. Harry Bach

  • Who is Harry Bach?

  • Bach is a Welsh term meaning Mate / Friend

  • i can remember harry when he sang on the radio programe welsh rarebit he used to sing a song called "If I had the heart of a Clown"and he was fantastic singing it, I've never heard it since then and that must be 50+ years ago. Vercres

  • With all his other talents we forget what a fantastic singer Sir Harry was. RIP

  • I saw sir harry twice live in the BRIGHTON dome once as harry then sir harry seacombe what great nights they were never forget them

  • I used to cringe when my father used to listen to his records and watch him on TV, but now i am older and wiser really appreciate his tremendous voice.

  • same here-but we weren,t to know were we?this one digs at my memories from deep within.such a wonderful voice-such a jolly-happy chap-that made this world a happier place.he will ALWAYS be sadly missed.R.I.P.Harry

  • Sorry An Amendment to below; By accident I typed 1998 It should read 1989

  • I was cabin crew on a BM flight London to Edinburgh back in 1998. I spilled a dish of sweets in the aisle, one of the passangers jumped down and started helping me scoop up the sweets, It was only when he laughed, I recognised him; Harry Secombe! What a lovely man! I met many famous people, but none with chrisma to match his, so joyus, humble, and alive! I can only believe he was like this to his last moment, Rising above his illness! The World Could Do With More Sir Harry Secombe's!

  • orrinoconnor-you were blessed with his presence in your life,i would have loved to have met him-i think he wasted too much time on comedy-he had a singing voice that any man would be proud to own

  • Song written by none other than one Charles Chaplin. Petula Clark also had a hit with this song at the same time!

  • When he sang a night club in the 70's he didnt need a mike.....it was so poworfull...brillent....and such a lovely man to us all......RIP.

  • AMAZING VOICE.!!!

  • Such lovely memories, my Dad had a great voice and he used to sing this all the time...

    THanks

    Pat

  • Bravo Neddy Seagoon! Rest in Peace.

  • This was played at my farthers funeral on his request thank you for the music Sir Harry oh and thank you Charlie Chapplin for the composition

  • Lovely, Lovely Lovely. Thank you so much for posting this version. Brings tears to my eyes

  • fantastic

  • "Not so much bel canto as can belto."

    Gawd bless 'im.

  • Beautiful singer - great song!

  • When I first heard him sing, all those years ago, I was gobsmacked. The guy was a comedian, and here he had this beautiful rich voice. It was always a pleasure to watch him and enjoy his voice. Thank you so much for this. I know he had more songs. A lot more. I hope you or someone else puts them on. slainte

  • Dear cordaleme,

He wrote novels too. "Twice Brightly" is a super read. Good luck.

  • Jenny, you hit the nail on the head. It's true in that time period, even the great pop singers were struggling

  • did you knoww he is a distant relative to faryl smith :)

  • Steve, thanks again. I am verry happy, and young again.

  • omg no wonder faryl is sooo good , :) she amazin if u havent already type in her name n listen 2 angel , its sooo emotional its unreal xx

  • RIP and god bless you Harry Sekom

  • type in 'Faryl Smith' on youtube she is a relative of harry's and has just audutioned for britains got talent

  • Terrific!

  • I was working the lights on QE2 when he was making his US debut, he was sweating and nervous. I tried to him encouragment , like "give it them Harry" ,

We Welsh were born to sing.

Seems the Americans did not appreciate him, at the time.

  • In my opinion, by 1967, the public taste in music in North America was just starting to go downhill. This may be why Americans did not recognize the incredible singing talent that Harry Secombe possessed. This is my favourite version of this song.

  • It is indeed very sad that beautiful music, singers, and songs were just starting to disappear when this was recorded. Again, this recording is absolutely fantastic!

  • Have we seen the very end of people like Sir Harry, or is it simply nostalgia. Could you really put Leon Jackson on the same stage as this legend of a man? I ask you.

  • harry was famouse for blowing rasberrys and giggleing like a fool but god he could sing.

  • no one can sing like this man.

    R.I.P with my Dad

  • A touching tribute to both men, pink. With that wonderful voice ringing in my ears I felt the overwhelming urge to tell you so.

  • thank you.

  • Great voice, I still like Petula's better..........

  • You can beat the Welsh at Rugby. You can beat them at dancing. You can even beat them in a quiz. But you can't beat them at singing... Well this Welshman at least...Neddy Seagoon...

  • great analysis!!

  • Nice to hear a male rendition of this song, beautifully interpreted (very different from Clark's)and powered too. Thank you.

  • Go on "H" give it some clog !! Nice one mate!

  • A wonderful voice, Unfortunately his great TV comedy appearances in the US overshadowed his wonderful singing.

  • amazing!! the same guy from the goons right?

  • Yes this is the one and only Neddy Seagoon - God bless him. Have a listen to his "Vienna City of Dreams" recording on this site!

  • I will mate! Cheers :)

  • I'd never heard this version before. Thank you. He makes a very different song out of it. It's hard to imagine that being in the charts in the swinging 60s. Not a "yeah" in sight! I still prefer Petula's version though!
