Angus McColl playing for Scotland !...Why have Adidas not noted that one of the greatest pipers on earth plays in "sambas" we haven't had a striker like him for years...he takes my breath away...and I'm a bloke!..Christ almighty I need a blast from Angus in the morning as much as I need to live...
Leaving Port Askaig.... jaw dropping. we were lucky enough to play on Islay last year, wonderfull hospitality and stunning scenery. I have a view of Arran and Ailsa Craig every day and was still amazed by the views on the ferry crossing.
What's sitting on my chair watching this video is a one and only goose bump, if you know what I mean :-) - Absolutely fantastic and at the same time very touching.
You have a great piping name. Aside from Angus McColl, search for the tunes Mrs. John McColl and The Clan McColl, both written by piping great John McColl.
I love the sound of the pipes when played by bands, especially the Scottish Regimental Bands. My brother having served in the Cameronian Rifles during WW2. The Solo pipes I am not so keen on, particularly when they are played indoors. They should be played on Rannoch Moor, preferably whilst I am on Exmoor. On two occasions in my life I unwittingly found myself in an enclosed space with solo bagpipers. I now choose my social venues very carefully and sit close to the door just in case one appears
Fair enough...though the pipes sound great in a church...bottom line...not all indoor venues are unsuitable for the pipes provided the ceiling is high enough.
You are right. My first experience of an indoor solo piper was in a bar at Fort William. Far from ideal. My brother's wife, who died recently, had her coffin escorted to her grave by a lone piper. Very moving. But I have a preference for the massed pipers playing a lament such as " The Flowers of the Forest"; or the slow march which escorted Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother to her funeral service. Sounds which can stir the hearts of the English too.
My favourite piper. Wonder if he is a close relation to the famous John Roderick McColl of Oban that competed against my cousin Willie Campbell ex Queen's Piper and PM PPCLI
Sometimes I can't hear the bass --- when I'm on the inside, so I rest the stick near my ear so you can hear/feel the bass drone. I wonder if that's what he's doing also.

Sorry to hear about your sister in law. In any case, Lochabor No More is better as a lament...check it out when you have the chance.

I don't understand your comment, but I think that I can detect hint of racist attitude in there. Would I be correct in assuming that?

Leaving Port Askaig 6/8 is first tune.

At the workshop ha tried to teach us the tune. It's pretty hard.
askmrlizard 4 years ago
Yup, hard... has lots of notes that are there but can't be heard as the tune is played.
MacNeils of Ugandale is a very similar tune, but a whole bunch easier.
