Forresten; Vet du hva navnet på han som flyr er? Er han instruktør? Syntes det var litt rart at du ikke satt i forsetet, det er der de fleste koser seg mens instruktøren flyr bakfra :D
You must look were the steam (in german wolke) is and mostly under the steams are thermik or you fly in the montans at a hang and youse winds who flow up the mountan . Sry for my bad english im a german
There are hundreds of ways. Looking at the clouds is one of the most common, if a cloud is developing it means directly under it is a thermal. If a cloud is dissipating though, there's lots of sink under them. In hilly and mountainous regions, slope lift is often used. It's almost always there, on one side of the slope. Those are probably the most common, but you can also tell a thermal from it's effect on the glider as you fly through or near it.
To solo a glider in the United States you must be 14 years old, have no known medical problems which would prevent you from being a safe pilot, pass a solo written test, perform flight manuevers to the satisfaction of your flight instructor. At 16 you can take a written test then a flight test with a FAA examiner to earn a Private Pilot's license with a glider rating.
I spent a Saturday out in Warner Springs doing sail plane acro and holly shit was it fun, its much smoother than powered flight and when air speeds are low its very quite as well, pulling 6 G's positive and 2.5 G's negative will tend to make your lunch come out of your nose but you get used to it
I highly recommend to anyone interested in flight to hire themselves an instructor and go spend some time hanging in your seat belt harness, figure $150-$250 per flight its well worth it
oh i love the ask21, only plane in my club allowed to do aerobatics ^^, been in the plane for all aerobatic maneuvrs except aileron roll barrel roll and back flying, and only done spin loop and stall turn 100% by my self, gotta love gliders, ps: im only 15.

Is the only way to find thermals is by looking at birds and other gliders. Or can you use infrared camera?

btw, how fast can a sailplane go?
Norenlind 2 years ago
Usually between 250 and 275 km/h
AcroFlieger 2 years ago
no it depends 250 - 275 is really fast a normal speed in an ASK 21 is 90 but it could fly 150
yonieter 2 years ago
The Speedlimit of the ASK 21 is about 270 km/h, not 150.
AcroFlieger 2 years ago
i didn't said it was the limit but 270 is fast though
yonieter 2 years ago
@AcroFlieger
150kn = 280km/h

If you want to fly a sailplane, do you have to be like a special sailplane pilot or just a regular pilot who flyes for example cessna.

The stall is an aerobatic, but not an acrobatic maneuver.

This is the glider i'm training with. Soon i'll get the licence. Actually a very safe plane.

the ask-21 is around 70,000 Euros.
Kinda pricey but sail planes are very limited production.
I just wish the sold it as a Kit form for like 15-20K many people would gladly pay that
