Sadly, I never got to own a hi-md but I do want one. They look and sound amazing! However, as Sony have decided to stop selling MD equipment, it's looking unlikely. I've created a petition to hopefully change that. I can't link but please google BBMD2011 and sign. Thanks

@acculink It mounts as a disk drive to which you can copy the files. the older models required the music to be recorded to them if I am not mistaken?

I still own a Sony Mini-Disc, but the local Sony store does not have anything left in Mini-Disc.

Disc's are usually found at Sony Stores or other electronic resellers. Getting media on the disc, u just use the player, copy stuff onto it via USB or the old-school way record onto the disk via input on the player.

Yeah minidisc was something else. I have a Sony NH1 and Sharp DR420 players. The Sony has magnesioum alloy casing and looks beautiful. It plays mds much better than the Sharp. It cost me an arm and a leg but I spent some wonderful time with it. It's so funny how all this technology brought nothing good - today's mp3 players /Ipod included( sound terrible even with good cans.

Not only have Sony killed Minidisc, but it looks like they've killed ATRAC as well. :/

Today I bought a Sony X 1000 Walkman DAP. It does not play ATRAC, it plays everything else. It comes with a tool to convert ATRAC and Sonic Stage libraries to MP3, but the player itself does not play that format natively. BTW the X 1000 is a great player, sounds far better than any Ipod.

The Sony players in Japan still support ATRAC. In fact, the Japanese version of the X-series plays ATRAC just fine.

It's interesting that the Japanese versions of the Walkmans still have ATRAC, including the latest X series. I guess in Japan there is still enough demand for it.

So presumably if someone who is not in Japan wanted their Walkman to play ATRAC, they could flash it with the Japanese firmware? Although all the menus would probably be in Japanese as well.

My friends have Ipods and they lock up all the time. I love loading my disks.. as my music is always there.

The battery cost a few Dollars and not $70 every 2 years for a replacement.

Yeah they Rock, actually sold mine as I could not be bothered loading disks, there was no MiniDisk Adapter for my VW Golf... the list goes on....

Now I recently bought a Linn DS HiFi and it works best with lossless music.... Thanks to my laziness... I have to rip all my good stuff in lossless anyway...

I just bought one of these - MiniDisc Rock, so much more natural sounding than ipods,I collect cool collectable blanks as well and label them up witha artwork sleeves.

Unlimited storage, swappable batterries, ability to record in PCM uncompressed, the list goes on, Long Live MiniDisc, I am stockpiling for a lifetime use, the perfect format! Shame Sony has lost their way with it and iSheeple people have lost the plot on what real quality is all about.

proprietary headphones killed the whole thing. when will sony ever get it. that sure looks like a sweet MD. nowadays for the same price I can get a Touch which not only plays audio but also surfs the web and plays movies. I'd love to have this MD but I'd feel like a damned fool because of it's limited functionality compared to the touch.

@ wh0m33 - The MiniDiscs are a FOCUSED functionality.

I owned a few MD in the last 10 and used serveral iPods and an iPhone which is basically the same as the Touch and I'll tell you, its so distracting, so over-engaging that I found myself using it for too many things. It was taking over my life.

As a music lover I went back to MiniDIsc because it makes you focus on the music. Plus the RH1 is very pro in look & feel. Im not interested in hand Laptops with color menu's.

Uh, I'm not really sure what you mean by the fact that the Touch was "taking over your life" unless you're referring to it's multi-functionality, which was the exact point that I was trying to make. I believe multifunctionality is called getting more bang for your buck. Why should I "settle" for only music? When I can have music, movies and the web? Hey, I try real hard to keep my Touch, if I get one, from taking my life over. Have a good one!

I get what GazamYT says. I own 4 MD's and 3 ipods plus the Iphone 3G. I like my 3G and az a gadget it is prbably the best I ever had but as phone it fails to meed the minimum expectations a moders smartphone should. Anyways I think he only meant that you tend to do more things at a time if you have an ipod and it distracts you from the music itself. Original ipod earphones are rubbish as well!!

I've had MD since the 90's. I record live and it is the only product that will last. The absolute best backup via lossless cable from ANY devise is a smile on my face.

I have one of the VERY FIRST recorders still going, I've found it indispensable and quite frankly, what could replace it . Remember it's all about the SOUND.

MD has a great old school sound like tape or record the bottom end is warm and realistic but the only problem i find is the top end sometimes has to much or not enough depending. If its optical the hi end needs to be turned down and if analog turned up ether way they still Rock Btw great vid whats the first song called the one with the piano

It depends on what you need. if the ipod is right for you, then great, enjoy it. But im a guitar player and I like making recordings...I cant do that with Ipods, also I give more value tu quality than to quantity, obviously the minidisc has better sound quality because it dont compress your files. also when an ipod dies, all your music is gone, when the MD dies, you still have the discs...its all personal.

Ive had MDs since 2004 and all my units are working perfectly.

you don't need Hi-MDs, you can use normal mini-discs but it won't have the same encoding capabilities as Hi-MDs which have high storage capacity.
