If you block the right direction which is "holding back while facing your opponent" it will block anything even a 2 way attack like that one.

Its because the ball hit him before dhalsim did on the other side. if he would of hit him first the ball would of torn him up

If Dhalsim attacked first it would have made no difference.

If you want to block, you have to press the direction that is AWAY from your opponent.

Dhalsim was on the left, so Ryu pressed to the right to block. It does not matter what direction the ultra is approaching from.

I heard in this interview that Gootecks did, that the way the Japanese see the game is different from the way we usually see it in the US. They see it as a match between characters and its all about know the character match. Skill or being the best is not the main focus but knowing and understanding the match up. I would like to adopt this mindset but I don't have anyone to back me up and teach me.

I don't really think the mindsets are all that different. Players in the US consider how different characters match up against each other too. That knowledge goes a long way towards improving an individual's skill and is also a large part of why the best players are the best.
