Irish...Dane axe...how much sense does that make? Just implying it's help by an irishman/woman or could mean it's a dane-style axe forged in Ireland I suppose. Either way, great video.
I have no idea how much does an Irish Daneaxe weights. But for me it makes more sense to get both hands together when teh attack with the Irish Daneaxe is taking place. Doing this you will get more speed and impact.
you should be holding the dane axe the other way round so you deliver the strike to the sword side, making it much hardoer to block. Its takes LOTS of practice to make this 2nd nature though
@freakazoid1982 Well, during the peak of the Viking age (around 900 AD), lot's of Vikings were settling in Wales, England, Scotland, and particularly Ireland. And unlike other foreign settlers/invaders, they managed to co-exist with the Irish pretty well (Celts and Vikings are very similar after all). So as the cultures mixed, things that were originally Norse came out with Irish tweaks and vice versa. So you can have an Irish Daneaxe.
@Peppepoppldoppl Sorry about my bad English and stupid message but I mean that they can't actually try to hit each other properly. They have to pay attention to not to hurt each other.
As hathipnath have said, the huskarlar who used these twohanded axe's would train to wield the axe towards the opponents right side, he could then get around the shield, either to strike or hook the shield then fling it open and strike. Altough the two hander is a offensive weapon it could be used from the second rank in a shieldwall, but a huskarl would also have a sword and shield and probably a spear along with the twohander for a defensive role. So strike right side and he should be f***ed.
irish long axe does not look that different from the danish long axe there are lots of historical images from elizabeth firsts time with irish with long axes is this something they pick up from the danes and norse i know there was a irish name for a long axe in the time of brian boru but my irish is a bit poor was never good in school lol...
Two handed axes are hard to mock fight with you almost need to be Constantly Offensive but at the same time you need to make sure you partners shield arm is up to the tast
Damnit, I must complain! You should've charged at her with your buckler in the instant she swung into your shield. Knocking her over. I PAID TO SEE BLOOD, DAMN YOU!
The statement that Danes did not use daneaxes is very wrong. Lots of them found in Denmark.
As for the fighting... try a search for "Moesgaard", "Ask", "Ulfhednir", "Trelleborg", "Einwic" or "Jomsviking"here, I will not denigrade anyone, so that is all I will say.
Isn't she holding the axe wrong? If she was holding axe blade towards her LEFT arm, she would aim the blows to the sword side, not the shield side, and her opponent would have to move the shield in front of his sword arm for it to be of any use at all.
Well, considering that I'm in a boffer group that fights with light foam weapons, and I still nearly tore a guy's thumb off at our season opener, I know how easy it is to cause accidental injury even with "safe" full contact weapons. Having an ambulance carry someone off your field is really bad for morale.
That axe looks pretty sweet though. One of our new guys fights with a long and short axe (we call it Dwarven Florentine), I bet he'd love a long hafted one like that.
@NevTheDeranged Training is important, our society only allows combat with more "advanced" weapons once experience with less dangerous ones is gained. Tests play a big part in advancement too, helping weed out those who don't have the control needed.
@NevTheDeranged well, I've trained with a friend of mine for 3 years with sharp katana without any injuries, and we are not training for show-off purposes. at some point, when you've learned how to wield a weapon it's impossible to get any further without more effort in your training. so i guess fsbritney has a point!
@NevTheDeranged My friends and I used to always fashion different weapons made of wood, depending on the kind of weapon, we would always make sure to make the weight ratios right, (The wooden battleaxe's head would be MUCH heavier than the handle, a staff would be equally balanced all throughout, wooden swords, etc... We did full contact but we wore football helmets. It was AMAZINGLY fun, we broke quite a few bones but healed quickly.
Not only did the Vikings fight the Irish, but many settled and lived there too. The two cultures intermingled quite successfully. I call it an "Irish Daneaxe" because the original Danes didn't use it, only the Dane living in Ireland who pirated merchant shipping in the Irish Channel.
I apologise for not having the ancient Norse/Gaelic term for the axe in question. I seem to remember it was something like "gualonga" or something similar, but please don't quote me on this.
now imagine a line of naked women charging at you, jumping, screaming and cursing... there is a good chance you'l forget about the line of naked men charging infront of them especialy when their tool is bigger than yours, hahaha! but its true.
Late Irish mercenaries had a descendant of the Dane axe, the Sparth axe. The Sparth was similar in length and reach but a bit heavier and with an upward bearding if that makes sense.
@Noahwig they did use a celtic version of the bearded axe, however they were not quite the same. the celtic version was slightly shorter and not usually quite so heavy.
And honestly, how important is it if a real warrior who actually has to wield weapons for actual fighting could kill one of these people? And why is this such a big deal?
lol. Exactly! I'm not trying to prove anything in particular by posting this video, I just thought someone might be interested in seeing a little fight practice by members of Regia Anglorum!
I enjoyed watching. Never heard of Regia Anglorum( cool name by the way) but the fight was fun to watch. It was also fun to see how worked up people got over something like this
A true mideval physics scholar with a protractor would have killed them both in the same stab. Just watching it would probably fracture someone's skull, somewhere.
If one were so inclined, it is more difficult tough because slashing and chopping are pretty ineffective so your best bet would be to stab at the throat or eyes.
One hit to the head with a wooden weapon with force can crack your skull. A hit with force to your limbs can break bones easily. You don't even have to hit extremely hard either... especially if it's hardwood.
It takes a considerable amount of force to crack a human skull with a piece of wood and takes TREMENDOUS force to break bones unless you are REALLY trying to hurt somebody and if you are fucking around w/ your friends its not likely.
A sword is basically a long lever with a narrow striking edge (that means high psi). You can easily fracture someone's skull without meaning to do so. It is not hard to break a bone.
Of course, you are a wolf trained in the way of the ninja at dawn. You obviously know what you're talking about... and you're 16. Winning combination.
Me and my friends used to fuck around all the time with sticks, staffs, boken and other wooden shit and occasionally we hit each other...HARD and not a bone was broken.
The bottom line is unless you REALLY want to hurt somebody you wont break anything with a light weight piece of wood unless you are arthritic and while it is possible it is HIGHLY unlikely.
Although I could be biased because I am a German with bones that were inherited from generations of dairy farmers!
A punch can fracture a skull. The human body is so frail I rather don't even want to think of the subject. People have been known to have snapped their spines or ribs by sneezing too hard.
Look, if a bunch of teenage friends want to pretend sword fight and they control the strength of their strikes trying intentionally to NOT kill each other chances are they will live.
Not exactly sure what re-re stands for... But since I haven't actually commented about the video, I thought they did pretty good, though you could see they weren't serious
Goddammit I thought we were done with this re-re discussion, nothing bad has ever happened to me or my friends no matter how recklessly we behaved WITHOUT safety gear so call me biased or whatever but I just don't care.
One other note on Dane axes. They are not intended for single combat; they are a support weapon meant to be wielded just behind the front rank of a shieldwall.
The wielder must have good armor, what with no shield and all, and the axe haft must be long enough to reach over the shieldwall. The four foot handle really should be close to five or even six feet.
An interesting idea. Historians and historical evidence suggests that dane axe shafts were seldom longer than 4 feet! It has also been suggested that Huscarls operated in pairs to draw horsemen out. One to tempt the horseman into combat, the other to strike.
Sure. But main advantage Huscarls had was that they were tought to fight like left handed--->their attacks couldnt be blocked by shield. They used they shields, but passively- they fastened them on their left arm (on shoulder), so they were quite well protected.
yeah that type of skeggox is useless in the thrust. I'm not convinced that bearded axes were used much in war; the examples that I've seen are all more suited to shipbuilding. The type L and M axes have some definite thrusting ability, and the later sparth axe is a great thruster.
The issue with hatchets is reach, however this is compensated by extreme mobility, speed and handling. by the time someone is swinging my way I can easily dodge or parry the attack and even if I cant get in close I can tire out my opponent and the decapitate him.
If I wanted to parry I would need handguards though.
No way man. One on one, maybe. Not in the shieldwall. You need to be able to work with the guys with you and defend from attacks from all angles. You need a shield for that.
I sometimes feel that there isn't much use for Dane axes under Regia rules...or that matter any rules that bear sanity. They're frightfully devastating and terrifying. They just can't be used even slightly realistically as they're simply going to rip people in half.
Ah, the WMA|SCA conundrum: is it better to fake fight with live steel, or really fight with fake weapons.
The trouble is that live steel may look beter, but even the best reenactors are clearly not trying to actually hit eachother, and by extension not actually learning how to fight. This girl, for example, is clearly attacking the shield and not the man.
The alternative isn't great: you strike with real intent, but you're swinging a rattan stick, and everybody knows it.
To be fair I think this was a little showfighting practice, but I know what you mean completely. I've done a little full contact stuff with rattan in Seattle and learn a lot about how to place proper strength blows that I would never have learnt in Regia.
If the fingers were a valid target then so is the rest of the body. You DO NOT want to get in the way of one of these Dane Axes as they will take your head clean off, and timing a shot to the fingers when that axe is in full swing is likely to get you killed not just disabled, even with the shield. These guys are reenacting combat not trying to actually kill each other!
I think you are right. If she was stronger, and I am still impressed that she was wielding that thing anyways, she would do some more combo techniques, taking one swing as a distraction and letting it set up another kill shot swing. Not to mention, with a little oomph behind those strikes, that guy wouldn't have much of a shield left in the end anyways!
Come on get that axe singing when you swing it and that shield with be nothing but fire wood.

Well, no...
I AM a Saxon from the East of the Netherlands.
'Hoes/Hus' simply means ''House'' and ''Karl/Keerl'' means ''Strong/big man''.
It still does in our dialect.
So a ''Huskarl/Hoeskeerl'' was a strong man, defending the house.
A guard so to speak.
Which is of course also a warrior, but the origin of the word is Saxon.

Sure. But main advantage Huscarls had was that they were tought to fight like left handed--->their attacks couldnt be blocked by shield. They used they shields, but passively- they fastened them on their left arm (on shoulder), so they were quite well protected.

The problem with that type of axe is that unlike halberds it is incapable of thrusting/spear attacks!
dawnninjawolf 3 years ago
yeah that type of skeggox is useless in the thrust. I'm not convinced that bearded axes were used much in war; the examples that I've seen are all more suited to shipbuilding. The type L and M axes have some definite thrusting ability, and the later sparth axe is a great thruster.

Yeah, I myself would prefer two hatchets! Yes I am a savage bastard!

You'd be dead in moments in the shieldwall matey.

For attacking an unprotected area??????
dawnninjawolf 3 years ago
Nope, for not using a shield!
fsbritney 3 years ago
But she was using a two-handed weapon, how did shields get into the conversation?
dawnninjawolf 3 years ago
You said you'd want to use two hatchets. Both short handled. Very ineffective in a shieldwall.
fsbritney 3 years ago
The issue with hatchets is reach, however this is compensated by extreme mobility, speed and handling. by the time someone is swinging my way I can easily dodge or parry the attack and even if I cant get in close I can tire out my opponent and the decapitate him.
If I wanted to parry I would need handguards though.
dawnninjawolf 3 years ago
No way man. One on one, maybe. Not in the shieldwall. You need to be able to work with the guys with you and defend from attacks from all angles. You need a shield for that.
fsbritney 3 years ago
That makes sense, if I was in a shieldwall I would want a spear! or better yet a flamethrower! lol!

MorteWulfe 3 years ago
Much of the problem is that a little oomph can be REALLY dangerous!
fsbritney 3 years ago
I can imagine! Even if the axe blade is dull it would hit like one horrendous mace!
