Nate Smith is the drummer for Chris Potter Underground as well as the Dave Holland Quintet, which also includes Chris Potter. This is the DHQ, most obviously noted by the presence of an acoustic bass (CPU has no bass)
@mikulasvselicha no.. this is the Dave Holland Quintet.. and one of the members is Chris Potter.. this was played at my city and I was on that show!! incredible one, of course..
I think they do sound a bit similar, the first time I heard prime Directive i thought it was Nate Smith, but I had just seen him with Chris Potter the week before.
I would have to agree. They are definitely different, but they do hit up similar sounding licks at times. I think he has more in common with Billy Kilson than any other drummer. For instance, he doesn't sound anything like Harland or Greg Hutchinson or something.
Oh I see, excuse me. And no, Kilson and Smith do not sound similar at all. Very different styles, different sets and cymbals and uh ... Nate has no earring. ^^
Isnt this Chris Potter's Underground? Nate Smith plays the drums with him, doesn't he?

I went to college (JMU) with Nate. He was a total monster back then too. It was funny--there was Nate....and then the rest of us.
