They still blow any "electronic" artist out of the water today. You know why? Not only was their music so hypnotic and amazing but, they did it on machines that they themselves made. This was the 1970's. Drum machines and such were not commonplace back then.

@jodi183 Actually, Kraftwerk are more or less the inventors of electronic drums as a stage instrument. Flur built the first manually triggered electronic drumkit in the early 70's. Between that and popularising vocoders in music (and as such, indirectly creating Autotune) they're undoubtedly one of the biggest influences on music in the 20th century.

@btmacie It goes "Halb wesen und Halb Ding", literally translated it means "being half and half" which is a reference to being part Man, part Machine, the recurring theme of this song. It changes to "halb Wesen und halb uberDing" which is basically saying that by being a Man-Machine (blending humanity and technology) you can overcome any problem set before you. That ultimately is the core ethos of Kraftwerk: Humanity and Technology in a perfect symbiosis.

I went to their concert in Helsinki a couple of years ago, and it absolutely blew my mind! Their music and appearance are so robotic, that the cheering and yelling audience seems out of place and almost inappropriate.

Of course, I applauded like a madman too, but think about it: A Kraftwerk concert where the audience would remain absolutely silent from beginning to the end. Wow :)
