The hostility that was expressed at the time wasn't because the French were criticizing the war, but because it was perceived to go further a criticize all of American society. I am American and I love the French (and love Germans too). And like them, I do not like the British at all. The French appear as if they are arrogant but really, they are not. Some of the friendliest people in the world I met in Paris, unlike the snobs in England. The food was grand, the art work incredible, and the sights unforgettable.

If you really read those books you surelly know that France was is war period and revolution since 1789.
the population wanted to be in security and didn't trust their king anymore so they made a revolution.
Now when people are angry against something (exemple : Iraq war) they demonstrated against the war.
But now government are much more stronger and control the people with a lot of ease.
