How obvious does Timmy have to make it on the last note for the idiots commenting here to realise that (a) the guitars are playback and (b) he fucking hated doing it that way.
What would the point be to not play the instruments? If anything he'll fuck up the vocals and not the guitar playing. I don't know whats going on, but I doubt they weren't actually playing...
real vocals with mimed instruments, you can see at the end when tim does the strum to show its mimed hes having a laugh about it which is all you can do, not having a go its just how it is no question, no doubt they were told to mime by some cunt associated with the arias real shame cause in my book they are australia's best live band
Just because they kick ass live, doesn't mean they are miming... these guys would never, ever mime.. they are truly one of the most underrated (worldwide) bands ever... god bless you YOU AM I

hahaha Ballarat one cop town...is total crap...lots of cops, lots of stabbings, lots of bogan aussies..n hey i am one too:P the only thing that keeps australia kinda ok is our inability to have the streets flooded with crack:P waay to far from everyone for mass drug importation....
Feck I'm getting old. I remember being told about TImmy holding his arms up over that epic ending in protest by some mates at TAFE a day or 2 after it was on telly. And I thought "Fuck, I must see that".
And now I have 16 years later.
I think he helped get rid of the stupid sing over backing tape crap and miming we put up with on Aussie TV with that single gesture. Of course had he said what he was really thinking at the time in Timmyspeak then everyone would probably still be miming now.
The only reason I know of these guys is I found their CD at 99 cent store and I could not stop playing it ...literally!! That was 5 years ago (so...2005?). I want to learn more about these guys...I am on a quest. I know they have come to LA in the past. The art work on the album is well done. I am intrigued and sold on them! This is my favourite song off that album!!
@URturn2njoy Australians answer to The Who, influenced alot by The Replacements I think. Used to see em in late 80s with a multitude of great Aust bands in small bars back then, they were the ones who justifiably shot to fame...only regrets are that from my liver.Cheers.
@bimzelle YES!! great info. You were lucky to see them. I can hear the influences you speak about. Too bad I found out about them so late. I like the Holly Throsby version of it-- you can hear the lyrics a little clearer with it in a slower setting. Very sexy band and sexy song!!! I love the energy!! Take care, Liz:-)
@bimzelle You sound like an enthusiast...If keen, may like to YT search some of the other not so famous rougher Australian bands of that era. Beasts of Bourbon, Hard Ons, The Scientists, Cosmic Phycos, Bored, a song 'My Pal' by God is interesting they where only 15-16 yrs old. Henry Rollins, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Fugazi toured with some of them when out here back then.Think Kurt C quoted Beasts of Bourbon as an influence.Twas a prolific time pre the '91 global explosion wasnt it?..be well, Dave
still cannot believe Tim Rogers was our High School Captain at one stage haha Was amazed every time walking into our lecture theatre seeing "T.Rogers" on the board of male captains
Wow, that's pretty rude. I'm not a "cunt" just because I was born here and YOU are not laid back and cool just because you were born there! lol u fucker
@dochenry Yea, seriously. I have a friend that lives in Ballarat and she told me that they have one cop for the town..ONE! That tells ya sumfin huh lol Very cool:)
Also, the Aussie indie music scene is so damn hot right now, I can't get enough of em all....I should go live there lol
@shelibeli40 yeah mate the world is all the same. grass is always greener on the other side. dont get high hopes about australia. still we fucking rock, though :P
sorry mate the drums were played live but the guitar and bass weren't check the strumming in the solo he's not even trying to get it in synch. I think the previous person stating the last chord was done on purpose is right. they probably had no choice in the matter with it being the ARIAs and all - you know it's all gotta look good and clean blah blah blah. still a knock out performance and a killer song.
its shame the guitars and instruments are mimed, particualrly as tim rogers is one of australias best guitar players and andy and rusty are both chock full tallent, its almost unfair to make them mime given their collective tallent, nevertheless, a great performance from a brilliant band, still going strong.
He mimed... at all award shows to be either live or shortly after broadcast, it is a contractual obligation.
He should have done what K.Cobain did, and just ridicule... If you want to check it out.... it's a version of Smells like Teen spirit - i think either on a british or french, top of the pops type of show.
Yes, the playing is crearly mimed because notice how when he hits the last note of the song, HE ISN'T EVEN TOUCHING THE GUITAR! A great video nonetheless from a great band.
with that being said, he obviously didn't hit that last note.... unless the video is out of sync (i was paying more attention to the sound then the video).
Maybe they record the sound earlier (so they make sure they get a good performance or some crap).
i'd be betting that the producers wanted them to mime it the intentional last note miss was form of protest. I've seen You Am I perform on many TV shows and I can't recall another time they mimed.
they are mimimg you ozzie fools!

Mimed instruments, real vocals. Tim's voice sounds a little scratchy, and the guitars, too clean, too polished. Great song, anyway.

Good video but all instruments were clearly mimed. Volcals are legit as far as I can tell....
Fardunda 3 years ago
i agree, sweet performance, but made easy by miming guitar moves.... last cord is a dead giveaway.. done intentionally perhaps?
benmc 3 years ago 2
i'm not so sure about the instruments being mimed... I don't remember that many mistakes being in the recorded version of the song ;)
Mistakes like fingers not being in place properly when hitting the first strum of a chord (you can hear it with a bunch of his changes).
Zadan 3 years ago
with that being said, he obviously didn't hit that last note.... unless the video is out of sync (i was paying more attention to the sound then the video).
