Efficient Backpacking

I have one of those 500 dollar windscreens you talk about. It was worth every penny. It keeps the wind out of every part of the campsite and weighs one gram. Video to follow.

And the whole backpacking idea came about when we figured one day someone would start the pct with nothing, and pick up all his equipment on the way due to all the left over gear that over velous hikers leave behind. So in the mean time, we'd just use a resuply box and some duct tape and make a pack out of it, hence the start of backpackaging...this was all just a joke after being too tired and a little goofy.

Wow, so many people commented on this video, thanks! My friend joined me on a section of the PCT from Wrightwood to Agua Dulce. I used the soda can stove from a site I found, and it works great at .2 ounces. The pot was a little big but I never filded completely with water. Water boiled fast, not as quick as a whisper lite but for the weight and space I saved, the few extra minutes was worth it to me.

My cook kit is a tea light cup, aluminum foil, the top of a tuna can, some gutter guard and a beer can pot. Boils 1 liter in 10.5 min using 5/8 oz of alcohol.

I do feel proud when I carry less weight than a homeless person normally does. Making your own equipment certainly is rewarding.

I use to use a trangia stove which takes denatured alcohol. I just got a Msr Reactor stove which saves a lot on fuel and boils 1 liter in 3 minutes.

alcohol stove... .04 oz. made of soda cans. AMAZINGLY reliable. until you accidently step on it then your back in the dark ages.

used the alcohol stove for the whole pacific crest trail...would never go back to my wisperlight!

So light and works really well. you just need a wind shield!

Only takes 20 minutes to boil water! I'll take my $8- Primus and some good ol' white gas. :) Nice commentary!
