Its funny that the thing weights more than the gun itself. But if it wasnt for that we wouldnt have the amazing PSO style NV scopes that kalinka makes.
The PPN-2 was not really made for the AK, actually it was designed for use on the Degtyaryov RP-46, Gorjunov SG-43 and SGM, and the B-10 recoilless rifle. All quite heavy, crew-served weapons mounted on tripods, bipods or even wheeled carriages. Even back then, the NV made for the AK was a little more ocmpact.
Of course this was not the first Soviet military night vision device by any means, but the PPN-2 was developed and fielded by the Soviets in the late 1950's, and was replaced in the Red Army by the mid-1960's. It was still used by some East Bloc contries into the early 1970's. The unit in the video is actually a Polish version.
