I cannot begin to express my love for this band at this moment, please for the love of all that is good do not change or sell out or begin to care what anyone doesnt like. New favorite band. Continue the beatles legacy with pride...
LOL @ Joanna Newsom. She's only kidding about her "age is just a number comment" she's too busy playing the harp to be actually making babies, you guys.
Listen folks. The kid, at a few points, got tired and grouchy, as small kids do. He was not traumatised, he was not subjected to horrors by a uncaring, selfish mother. From this vid, its plain to see that he was introduced to the monsters gently and gradually - he wasn't scared at all. They just placed him near them, waited for him to get a little tired and teary, and filmed it, before the mother, after moments, picked him up and calmed him down. Use your brains, and calm down, guys.
Okay honestly, are any of you the kid in the video? No your not. You will never be him and never feel anything he feels. I'm sure alot of you would look back if it was you and feel like a badass if you were the kid in the MGMT music video. Obviously NONE OF YOU DUMBASSES were there for the making of this video. Who's to say he was actually scared, who's to say he's not. So really get over your pointless opinions because The director doesn't care what you say nor does MGMT.
When I first listened to this song it was in my uncles car, then I went home and watched the video and thought the little kid looked just like my uncles little boy, then I came and watched this and saw that the little kids name was Zachary...which is my uncles little boys name. Lol coincidence?
the baby was fine, he wasn;t being held by his mom thats why he cried. when i didn't know that i didn't like the video but now i know :D. its actually i beautiful video if you get the meaning.
@McBlevinz I'm not so sure aboutt hat. my kid still remembers the fact that her dad zipped the skin on her chin with her coat when she was 15 mos old. she flenches everytime still when he zips her coat up and shes 5 lol
Lot of people here missing the point. Wanna know the sickest thing bout the vid? It's the band member sticking out his tongue so the dog (who daily licks his own balls and ass) can lick it. Amazing that is somehow normal and yet a tiny baby who's got no understanding of what a monster looks like or is(or even internal organs and flesh which is what the "scary" monsters are sculpted to look like) has been traumatized. What's the song title? Isn't the point that they see things differently to us?
lol @ people that think the woman portrayed as "Zach's mom" in the video is actually his mother. That's Joanna Newsom, she's a singer-songwriter and a harpist. She has never had a child and is merely playing a part and joking around.
So obv part of this whole thing is that the mother is a complete mess who justifies profiting of her child's psychological scars (which, by the way, he WILL have from the making of this video--I ALMOST fucking had PTSD after watching this shit--people who like to see that haven't ever seen real violence, IMO) in the name of art or some shit. "Age is just a number." Are you serious? LOVE the song/band, HATE this video (even though it was shot at home in New Orleans). Call C.P.S. on that lady!!
@WILLIAMCHANEL dude thats a bit of an overreaction just cuz you were "scarred" by the video doesnt mean everyone else be, leave the kid alone and stay at home with your raging nonsense brother :/ its a great video great band great music
@RaqifHart I LOVE the band, LOVE the music, and am SOOOOOO not the type to be a tightass about this sort of thing. But that is just straight-up wack, yo, to have that kid get scared by those fucking monsters and shit to make a "good" video. I mean, it's just not cool, bro. I went to Parsons School of Design and got a MFA for undergrad, and--believe me--we did some crazy shit in arts school that "mainstream America" would disapprove of. So I am not the judgmental type. That said...
@WILLIAMCHANEL STFU you over-exaggerating smart-ass prick. didn't you see the first part of the video where the kid was laughing and playing with the monsters? he probably just cried cause he was tired or hungry.and how many times through the video did you see him crying?ONCE! calm the fuck down and stop trying to put down the baby's mother.you don't know what she's doing with that money.maybe a college fund.If ur gonna have PTSD from this, ur the biggest pussy i've ever heard of.
@WILLIAMCHANEL The baby was LAUGHING at the monsters! He was having fun! Did you not see that! And to him crying, they brought the kid on because he was capable of crying on demand. They also waited until he was a bit grumpy to film so he would cry even better. Hell, you can't get Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder from watching a music video either...
@McBlevinz You're an idiot. He won't remember it because it's a horrific event and the self-concious will repress it to protect the self. L2psychology
@McBlevinz okay yeah hes not gonna remember it, but watching a kid cry when he doesn't have too, thats not fun to watch and its definitely not fun to cry
@McBlevinz No there's two parts of the memory, the part that will forget the instance and the part that will remember the emotional trauma. Very sad but it will likely not affect the boy in later life who knows.
@McBlevinz Doesn't make a difference if you remember it or not. The psychological affects will still be there. Like are you afraid of something and usually can't figure out why? Your unconscious mind was fucked with then. Nature and Nurture theories man. This kid will have a horrible life.
@TheMusicismybff Yes. Totally he will for sure have a terrible life. Because of this he is now destined to get into drugs become clinically depressed and eventually kill himself. All because as a baby he was scared by a couple of "monsters". That sounds completely rational. Just stop. You're done.
@McBlevinz I didn't say he would major affects in his life. I was trying to make a point that anything that happened in a child's life will affect their future. It could be in a positive or negative way. Either way he's not gonna be completely unaffected by what happened to him, it will at some point create unusual fears. So no I'm not done.
@TheMusicismybff I'm sorry but I don't believe that this will affect him very much or at all. I'm not saying it that it for sure won't but I'm just pretty sure. Cause in reality I have no idea and you don't either. I just think the conclusion that he will have a horrible life was a little extreme. That's why I said your done haha
@McBlevinz yeah that conclusion was a bit extreme :/ I was just trying to say that it will affect him positively or negatively because our personalities are built on our childhood experiences. Small things like not being breastfed long enough have drastic affects so I was just saying this not affecting him is highly unlikely.
@abcjackx Love ur coment, evry1 else is like wtf? about the video and im scrolling through the controversies and then I see "what a milf". u just made my day XD
id be freaked out. the song is pure steaming shit staind tacos. id never do that if i had kids. yeah take it lightly and all but geez its plain unnerving. it dosent sit with me. so dont watch it ? i wont but i have! ill get a life but i thin k this is messed up .
That baby is is going to be the next top horror movie director. Even with him being taken from set when scared he won't forget an experience like that.
Kids that age brain's only understand things in concrete terms, that was -real- to him. Probably did some damage at worse, or after not having been harmed learned not to judge a book by its cover. Probably not.
i didn't understand her at the end at first, i thought she said "i don't really refer to him a child, you know, he's really nothing but a number." i was like, dang, you're a great mom. but no. she said age.
Look got to 3:35. The kid is a really good actor for his age. Yes he is a baby but you know, some of your favorite movies might have a baby crying and you don't think twice about it. I sure can't remember anything from when I was one or two. The child will be fine. He had a chance to adapt to the situation. He laughed in the faces of those monsters. And there were a few scenes where he was actually frightened but he was immediately taken away and calmed by his mother or another female figure. T
Okay people, do you guys remember anything from when you were 18 months old? The baby will get over it, just like you all got over that "monster in your closet and under the bed". Directors have done worse things to babies than this. Why are you hating on this exact music video?
Hahahaha it's fun to traumatise children. That poor kid is gonna have some extreme suppressed memories and social anxiety. But when you're rich and famous you can afford anything, even others' suffering.
Damn! I can't understand what Newsom (the blonde) says... please could someone transcribe it?? Or just tell me if I just heard that she had a child :O did not know that.
Good grief, people. Do YOU remember what happened to you at 18 months old? What scared you, what made you cry? Because we all had episodes where we cried that hard or were scared. Did you not see the mother explaining each thing, and pretend-screaming? Crying isn't gonna kill this baby, or even harm him. It's a non-issue.
I don't think the kid was traumatized, and even if he got freaked out it's really not something that's going to stick with him or become a repressed memory. There were people surrounding him without any scary costumes on to reassure him, and it seemed like he was given time to adapt to the environment and shit, instead of being thrust into a scary music video. People need to take it easy, lighten up, the kid is fine. Years from now he'll watch this, be proud, and wont remember a thing.
@ChadBennett33 Before I watch this "making of" video I thought the kid did get scared out of his wits. After watching it I think it was more of just a mild fright, and he will be fine. They showed the monsters to him in a gradual way and he was pretty ok with them. He started crying eventually because kids cry, but I after seeing this I think his needs were taken into consideration.
@TheRettaG I disagree. Kids that age can't 'act.' When they cry or act distressed is real.
I am aware that this conversation is dominated by the fans on this band, and I am not entirely sure how much involvement they had in the production of this video, but I find the video pretty abhorrent.
Also, I have showed this video to a pediatric psychologist and she was pretty shocked any parent would be willing to allow their child to be tormented like this.
Also, she expressed concern that the child may not receive any proper psychological monitoring after the videos shoot. She explained that humans at any age, whether they can retain memories of events or not, can have their brain chemistry permanently altered by emotional traumatic events.
Quoting her directly: Traumatic events cause the brain to create sudden and permanent changes to how the brain wires itself which, especially at this age, could lead to serious disorders like schizophrenia.
You could make the argument that the kid was not traumatized, that he freaked out just for a bit and settled down, and that argument has merit. I guess it's a question of whether in pursuit of artistic vision it was worth upsetting this infant so much. The finished product is miraculous and wonderful. But I don't know the answer. It doesn't seem right.
As a mother to a fifteen month old I owuld like to say she deserves to have her son taken away, your right he isnt a child, he is a toddler wholly dependent upon his parents to look out for him and protect him
Only time I think punchin' a female in the grill is 100percent excused. I'll be famous soon...Help me by checkin out my channel and I will find director and knockhimout
I don't give a fuck who you are that is the most fucked up shit I've ever seen done to a little baby like that...The mother and director owe me a 2 on 1 fade
This song is about facing your fears. Not thinking about your actions. I think mgmt conveyed that to the extreme. and that is how you get your response from people. Doing to the extreme. When we act brave for someone, we are willing to do anything for them. Stop worry about the child and get the point of the video...
You were a child Crawling on your knees toward him Making momma so proud But your voice is too loud Picking insects off of plants No time to think of consequences Control yourself Take only what you need from it A family of trees wanted to be haunted Control yourself Take only what you need from it
I think the music video made this look way worse than it actually was. Can't really say if it's right or not to subject a child to this. Although they didn't at any point leave him all alone; there was always people around and his mom was there too. At least she showed him the monsters to try to re-assure him that they weren't bad. He even laughed at them at one point. All in all, I can't say it's the best music video ive seen, the trippy-ness of it throws me off :/ I love the song though.
Mommy's little paycheck. No matter how much fun this kid may have had, they were still surrounding him with gruesome imagery that will probably stay in the back of his mind and haunt him until he's old enough to understand what exactly was going on.
@ Scythemantis - There is a fine line between crying and scaring a chlid... You can get a child cry just by ignoring a tantrum or not letting them have lollies, etc; however these are not cruel methods, what this poor child went through in the video IS cruel and who knows what kind of impacts it would have on the child. There is a reason why children are not supposed to watch horror movies (or anything else along those lines) because of the NEGATIVE impacts on them
Horribly painful music, horribly gross band makeup, and horribly wrong child abuse. If this video was supposed to show that the child wasn't abused, it did a piss poor job of it!
@KillYoFam97 Assuming that the kid is in genuine fear...He seems to enjoy the experience, and I'm sure his mother has ways to get him to cry...he is afterall, only 18 months, and kids that age will cry about anything
@sourfin The baby seemed fine until the monsters started trying to scare him and then he looked terrfied. I live with a 16 month old baby and when they cry there is most likely a good reason. I dont know any babies that cry with a terrified look on their faces out of excitement.
Damn i saw this just now on B&B and it was disturbing seeing this kid cry for the making of a video. These people disgust me. If the fangirls or fanboys defending them had a kid I bet they wouldnt let the director or band put their child in this video unless you are on crack or something. People these days -___-
The stuff we see looks scary to us because we know what it is, I don't think a kid that age would look at a monster and be afraid, he doesn't know that it's supposed to be scary or that monsters want to eat you. I base this off of when I was a kid messing with my cousin. I could put on any mask I had but the only thing that really scared him was when I'd start yelling and chasing after him. He really didn't become afraid of the masks themselves until he was about four.
Saw this video on B & Butthead and I have to say its disgusting. Say what you will that he had fun, in the video its all of the child very scared and upset. It disgusts me that these demented people got there jollies for there video from scaring a defensless baby. Lastly, the chick at the end is ignorant. Age is just a number when your an adult, but to children its very important. Young kids need to feel safe and protected. They let anyone be a parent these days.. DISGUSTING!!
@Broccolidiesel they are fuking wankers for doing this ,what a stupid fuking idea, makes me really mad ,how do they know whats going on in a childs mind.this is so wrong they need a good fukin slap.

TheFazzKazzyTheory 2 months ago
Oh relax, the kid will grow up to be a Metal God or the next Manson.
RVAGirl13 2 months ago
Hahahaha it's fun to traumatise children. That poor kid is gonna have some extreme suppressed memories and social anxiety. But when you're rich and famous you can afford anything, even others' suffering.
jibblejabjoe 2 months ago
@NSOMH Really? That's your argument? Worst things happen to children everyday, therefore this is acceptable?
That reasoning is fucked man

Good grief, people. Do YOU remember what happened to you at 18 months old? What scared you, what made you cry? Because we all had episodes where we cried that hard or were scared. Did you not see the mother explaining each thing, and pretend-screaming? Crying isn't gonna kill this baby, or even harm him. It's a non-issue.
Cadence22510 2 months ago
@Cadence22510 ya, it can traumatize and mentally scar this baby, but it's not an issue like you said. >.>

ChadBennett33 2 months ago 60
@ChadBennett33 Before I watch this "making of" video I thought the kid did get scared out of his wits. After watching it I think it was more of just a mild fright, and he will be fine. They showed the monsters to him in a gradual way and he was pretty ok with them. He started crying eventually because kids cry, but I after seeing this I think his needs were taken into consideration.
TheRettaG 1 month ago 2
@TheRettaG I disagree. Kids that age can't 'act.' When they cry or act distressed is real.
I am aware that this conversation is dominated by the fans on this band, and I am not entirely sure how much involvement they had in the production of this video, but I find the video pretty abhorrent.
Also, I have showed this video to a pediatric psychologist and she was pretty shocked any parent would be willing to allow their child to be tormented like this.
sefaen 1 month ago
Also, she expressed concern that the child may not receive any proper psychological monitoring after the videos shoot. She explained that humans at any age, whether they can retain memories of events or not, can have their brain chemistry permanently altered by emotional traumatic events.
Quoting her directly: Traumatic events cause the brain to create sudden and permanent changes to how the brain wires itself which, especially at this age, could lead to serious disorders like schizophrenia.
sefaen 1 month ago
You could make the argument that the kid was not traumatized, that he freaked out just for a bit and settled down, and that argument has merit. I guess it's a question of whether in pursuit of artistic vision it was worth upsetting this infant so much. The finished product is miraculous and wonderful. But I don't know the answer. It doesn't seem right.

skydogparsons 2 months ago
This song is about facing your fears. Not thinking about your actions. I think mgmt conveyed that to the extreme. and that is how you get your response from people. Doing to the extreme. When we act brave for someone, we are willing to do anything for them. Stop worry about the child and get the point of the video...

@KillYoFam97 Assuming that the kid is in genuine fear...He seems to enjoy the experience, and I'm sure his mother has ways to get him to cry...he is afterall, only 18 months, and kids that age will cry about anything
sourfin 2 months ago
@sourfin The baby seemed fine until the monsters started trying to scare him and then he looked terrfied. I live with a 16 month old baby and when they cry there is most likely a good reason. I dont know any babies that cry with a terrified look on their faces out of excitement.

Damn i saw this just now on B&B and it was disturbing seeing this kid cry for the making of a video. These people disgust me. If the fangirls or fanboys defending them had a kid I bet they wouldnt let the director or band put their child in this video unless you are on crack or something. People these days -___-

ColtAnderson93 3 months ago
The stuff we see looks scary to us because we know what it is, I don't think a kid that age would look at a monster and be afraid, he doesn't know that it's supposed to be scary or that monsters want to eat you. I base this off of when I was a kid messing with my cousin. I could put on any mask I had but the only thing that really scared him was when I'd start yelling and chasing after him. He really didn't become afraid of the masks themselves until he was about four.
CaptainPerverto 3 months ago
Saw this video on B & Butthead and I have to say its disgusting. Say what you will that he had fun, in the video its all of the child very scared and upset. It disgusts me that these demented people got there jollies for there video from scaring a defensless baby. Lastly, the chick at the end is ignorant. Age is just a number when your an adult, but to children its very important. Young kids need to feel safe and protected. They let anyone be a parent these days.. DISGUSTING!!
