David Lean is the best movie producer ever. Some of the shots in this movie a passage to India, where the train is travelling at sunset is absolutely marvelous at the few minutes of the bigenning of the film. David Lean is the best and i truly wish he were around to make more classic films. Thank you David. I truly also love the Film Lawence of Arabia You were a true movie director and made classic films. Thank you, from a fan of yours.
I love seeing people fighting about things so ridiculous such as if he made my forefathers suffer 200 years ago or why.......i find it so entertaining, like a dog fight, but stupid.
Actually after 200 yrs of colonialism, very few non-indians realize that India ever had a civilization of its own..funny enough though, a substantial amount of ancient Indian ruins/remains/artefacts were discovered by the british..
oh yaay thank you so much for uploading this! we're studying the book in my elit class and we were only allowed to watch the movie once and i missed few of the scenes and i have an assignment on character analysis.so this really helped! :)
There is a b&w BBC TV Play of the Month 1965 version of "A Passage to India" on YouTube with a brilliant cast - Sybil Thorndike - Virginia McKenna - Zia Moyheddin- - Saeed Jaffrey - Cyril Cusack. It tells the story in a much simpler way, concentrating on the characters. Well worth seeing. Find it on steffsstuff channel.
Judy Davis fans suffer like no other - one of the greatest actresses of our time utterly shunned celebrity, so every appearence is like water in the desert.
@Gatuxa - actually, both the book and the film keep it elusive, that is, one is not supposed to know what happened to her. I always felt that there was some sort of "power", if you will, in the cave. The film hints here & there at some "force" is at work prior to Adela's experience. For example, the scene with monkeys. I always thought that some "power" terrified her in the caves & caused her to injure herself. But that is the point - one must draw one's own conclusion.
@Gatuxa In Chapter 7: "A mystery is only a high-sounding term for a muddle. No advantage in stirring it up, ... Aziz & I know well that India's a muddle." I think it's meant to be a mystery of India which even Adele Quested doesn't understand.
@newfful The way she says ''yes, we did'', she manages to show so much and that look she gives the lady when told''lucky you'' absolutely brilliant. Cate Blanchett seems to get a LOTof praise for basically copying Judy Davis, IMHO.
Judy Davis is one of those great unconventional beauties. That too-pale skin and those too-dark lips. Tis' a pity one can't wave a magic wand and make her twenty again. She'd do great in those teen vampire flicks that are all over the place now.
@newfful ye she is, unfortunately she's never really fulfilled her talent, she's always really good but most of the other movies she's been in have been weak.
Thank you for posting this beautiful movie, it's at the first place of my favorite films, all of this film is perfect, the actors, the music and the story. My favorite character is Dr Aziz and the actor who play this role (Victor Banerjee) is excellent, I wonder why the Academy didn't nomined him! Anyway the other actors are good too. At last this movie, strangely, is never come out on DVD in Italy and only here I have the occasion to see it.
great movie...the british should have been kicked out right from the outset....had they not entered india...we would have had british slaves working in india for us...bt that day is not far off ...already i hear british running to india seeking jobs.....jai hind
@Skii06 you don't have to be so bitter. the gora sahib is gone and you have your own government. from what i see you live in the UK and by and large you Indians have done pretty well there and if the english goras didn't want you they could have expelled you like Idi Amin did but the UK took those Ugandan Asians in they are all living pretty comfortably.
@khatifabar ofcourse they had to take us in. they were the rootcause for many of the interreligious/intercultural problems. dont make them angels.it was their responsibility and not a favour. even now indians are going thru tough life in sri lanka, malaysia and west indies bcos they displaced ppl from the nativeland to far away places to make money for themselves.i suggest u read sea of poppies.
@khatifabar namaste jee..as i dont wish to call u sahib like my ancestors were to call the white man...
now why wouldnt they take us in, regarding all the atrocities your people did in India. EVER HEARD OF THE JALIANWALA BAGH MASSACRE 5000 INDIANS DIED THANKS TO THE WHITE MAN. having in mind the most priced diamond in the world the "kohinoor diamond" was stolen by your people and still we tolerated you!
I'll never understand why the European powers didn't take time to do the math before they went nuts for empire-building in the nineteenth-century.
Our own conservative economist Dr. Thomas Sowell did some number-crunching for one of his books back in the nineties and came to the conclusion that none of the colonies, including the "Jewel in the Crown" was ever (in the most ruthless economic terms) worth the expense of conquering and administering.
@Skii06 well said it an absolute surprise how native indians blame british for being evil and this and that...but the moment they get the UK visa stamp drool all the way to the flight
maybe the gora shaytan allowed the indians to stay as some small reparation for the rape and pillage of india, the wealth stolen, the population turned on each other and made to destroy itself, a proud and successful culture destroyed and thrown into poverty and civil war. but Indians are amazing resourceful people with an amazing work ethic who have gone to all corners of the earth and prospered beyond belief so we'll get over whatever has been done to us
The Brits would have profited far more if they had simply settled for doing good business with the various Nawabs and Maharajahs rather than conquering them. Just enough military action to keep the other European powers out of India would have sufficed.
@khatifabar your answer is nothing more then naiveness and ignorance. Go study a little about colonialism, before stating such childish point of view. You and seven kids who thought you were right.
Why am I stating my opinion here? Of course you would think like this. You have to keep the British pride and the feeling that they had done something good for the "uncivilized".
Thanks for posting this lovely movie on you tube. Although it has bad/low sound but still its a nice movie. Hope to see it more times in the future :) Thanks to my friend Lissie, who introduced me to this beautiful movie.
