If I remember correctly, this was filmed before the Jayhawks dropped 76 points on the Huskers, the all-time record for points allowed by Nebraska. I suppose if some team had to have that record against us, it's fitting (and karma?) that it was KU, since we dropped 70+ on them a number of times in the 40 years straight we won. This is a classy song, and your band sang it well. I've come back to listen to it several times over the years. Good luck, Jayhawks!
I absolutely hate this because it has nothing to do with Kansas, KU, or athletics. Hate it! Junk It ! Get rid of it! It's embarrassing to us Jayhawks! Junk it!!!
The tradition started back in the 1970s when a member of the band was from Nebraska. A tuba player asked him, "What do you miss most about Nebraska?" He replied, "I miss the hog calling." So the tubas, as a joke, decided to start this new thing called "hog calling". Soon the whole band got into it and it's been that way ever since.
@Xaber1: Being one of the old farts who was around in the '70s, I can confirm this account. It would have been 1978 or 1979. But I can also tell you that it was nothing this organized until after 1982 (my last marching year). I came back for the 2009 homecoming and was absolutely shocked that a goofy thing we did on the tuba bus had become an actual "thing". For what's it's worth, I approve :-)
What the hell is this? Couldn't you at least sing a better song without the name Nebraska in it, seeing how this is the University of Kansas?I have no clue what this is suppost to incorporate.
Not for nothing, but asking why a tradition is a tradition is almost pointless. Traditions are traditions because they've always been traditions. Griping about why the band does the hog call or why Army does pushups after every score or why Missouri named themselves for an animal that lives on the other side of the world from Missouri is a waste of the breath you took to gripe it.
If I remember correctly from what I was told by a KUMJ who started this tradition this started even before women were allowed to march so that makes it a tradition over 50 years old. And you guys sound a lot better with such a big group, although I don't remember the last part. And what about the bit about the drum line cadance when the drum line heads to the field.
The "What kind of day is it?" is actually what Hank Booth would say to us at the end of rehearsal on Saturday mornings from the press box. I marched under Foster, Oliver and Hudson. At the hog calling, the person who yelled "What kind of day is it?" was James Wong. And the 25/26 calling is the tunnel number which you get to "run" out of for run in. That is no different from when I was there less than 5 years ago.
Looks pretty organized to me -- it would have been more classy if you did that on your practice field and then just trouped to the stadium, but when has kU ever been classy?
Incorrect. If you knew anything about classy, you wouldn't have submitted a negative comment on the clip. You would have simply kept your comment to yourself.

I said that it would be classier to do this tradition on their practice field and then troupe to the stadium -- as in be in "game mode" by doing this at the stadium it sort of stops the flow imho -- they should be ready to go on the field not bob and sway.
I'm in no means dissing the tradition, just there is a place and time to do things and to me this is not it... however it IS kU
DUDE its at our home stadium i dont see anything wrong ok if you fine but dont get mad at other people and act like jackass because you dont think we are classy watch a ku game even agaist our rivals we help them up when they fall down at the end of play. You sir have no class.
I stand by my previous statement. You are ignorant about the KU band, Hog Calling, KU football and fans of the football team and band alike . This tradition is our way of getting excited about the game.....Guess you have to be a part of it to understand. And your first comment is, in fact, 'dissing' the tradition.
Either way; To comment, negatively, on something that you do not fully understand is......well......not classy. To take a cheap shot at a college tradition is also not classy and frankly childish. Please get a clue.
this is something the Stanford Band might do. Totally off the wall and cool

Thanks for the kind words. As for how long Hog Calling has been preformed, I really don't know when it officially started.
What part haven't you seen before? The last part with "What time is it" call and response? Or the 25 26 call outs?
