Nice review! I was skeptical at first, until I tried it with my very own iPhone 4S and was amazed! I was able to discern just about every musical note being played; as if were the band was playing right in front of me. Definitely worth the $600! Just my opinion of course...
most ipod docks are a waste of money, a simple 1/4inch jack to phono adapter, a half decent amp, and a pair of speakers does alot more for you, and for the same price
lol yeah right better then the Audioengines A5 not saying the Zeppelin isn't any good but remember this is only mainly use for Ipod's and mp3 players.I use the Audioengine A2 with a Nuforce U-Dac 2 and added a 10 inch Boston Acoustic powered subwoofer and yes it will kill this EASY but then again I use my Audioengines for my PC :)
@ande320 the Zepplin Air is better than Audioengine A5 according to who? I have the A5 and my mate down in Belfast has the Zepplin Air & even he acknowledges that the Audioengine's are better with much better bass response and clarity!
hows it alot better than a bose ..? i have the bose 10 price wise in uk its more expensive than this and imo i think sound quality is better wit the bose than this tbh this looks like something that come from a 1980,s baskball court
This is so overpriced, honestly do yourself a favour and buy the Audioengine A5! Not only will you save money but you will also get far better sounding speakers! PS this looks fucking ridiculous btw lol
@infiniteloop99 I listen to both, the xs had more base and power I listen manly to trance music, so you need more of that power to sound good. Zeppelin sounded just a little more clear and more easy on the physical positioning for the sweet spot.
@TheCaramelflavour You can connect it via and aux. cord to the headphone jack on the iPad... it would fit the dock, but probably wouldn't sit securely... you'd also cover the speakers up negatively affecting the sound.
is there any way around the lack of internet radio stream, ie without having to use a 3.5 mm jack,i've noticed that with iphone in docked state when i was trying to play internet-radio stream (unsuccessfully !!!) on switching to ipod i could hear the internet radio stream for 1 sec before the ipod audio started to play. i believe that internet radio audio gets suppresssed by inherent ipod on the iphone, hence its not routed through the dock. can this be overcome with a software tweak perhaps!
@xxnissansilviaxx lol i was asking the same questione i was comparing the two for days, but the sound from the zeppelin is perfect plus it does look a lot better, also you can connect it to your ps3, xbox360, laptop and tv to get that perfect suround sound
@Haskeo But then you'd have to pay for amplification. "Made for iPod"/iPod docks are all overpriced to me... including my beloved Harmon/Kardon Go+Play (original, not the new Mini in stores now)...
None of these things are tremendous values in the grand scheme of things... you just have to through that out the window if you want something stylish and compact like these. A (UGLY) $140-$180 Sony or Sharp Micro Stereo with an ipod dock sounds better than any of those (for the most part)
@psustud5327 you got a point, but for me i'd take sound quality and price over looks any day because ultimately i don't buy these things for show, i buy them for my personal enjoyment so if its cheap and sounds good then its a win in my book
@offroadfreak8582 FUCK YEAH DUDE!! FINALLY, someone who's actually heard one commenting! I swear the damn thing hits 35Hz in my bedroom! Sounds like I have mini SUBWOOFER playing along in certain spots! AND IT'S CLEAR AND BALANCED/then PORTABLE! can't beat that. This is an premium iPod dock that actually comes closest to being worth it's $250-$300 price tag!!!
@ChappazNUFC I think it's well worth the money, but you should still give it an audition before deciding. It's best to use a good power conditioner with the zeppelin, so additional cost may involve.
please don't even compare this with bose. This is totally in a different league . Both require deep wallets but you have to be a moron to think BOSE offers good sound.
@zollotech ehhh... well if you were talking about true Hi-Fi gear.. but here the diff. is so very negligible when comparing the sound of a 3.5mm jack on a $600 mini HiFi shelf system vs. the digital inputs of a dock like this my friend.... I think the 3.5mm route on a $600 set-up would actually be better.
The Zeppelin is a fine iPod speaker/dock, it is NOT the best. GENEVA makes higher quality products. Some are HUGE in comparison. This is a great compact speaker/dock.
@bsod4u2 But Geneva is like double the price of the Zepplin and is even less portable. However, does Geneva has its own DAC or does it relies on the iPod just like the Zep? The audio quality of the iPod kinda sucks so it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend too much $ on something if the data source is not very good to begin with.
@ASpringSymphony No IF ot BUT, the Geneva is a superior unit no matter how you try to slice it. The iPod "bad sound quality" is overblown to perfection and nausea.
By people who own low grade speakers and headphones for the most part.
Take an iPod and match it with a Wadia dock, send digital to a Berkeley Alpha DAC and you SURPASS any portable on planet Earth (the HiFi Man included).
The iPod is just a source for 0's and 1's. So your megabuck CD transport becomes a paper weight.
@bsod4u2 Thx for the reply. The Geneva should be superior when it costs almost twice as much, but for that kind of $ I think I'd rather spend a bit more and go for a real hifi setup than a speaker dock.
I don't hate the iPod; but I do wish that ipod had adopted a better chip to produce better sound (afterall it's a music player!). And I agree it works fine as a music server, but only when people are willing to spend more on things like the itransport & an external DAC.
@bsod4u2 The Geneva Sound M dock looks good for about £100 more than the Zep, but not a noticable difference unless you compare the two together. You'd be happy with a B&W system in your lounge
i never got a stand with mine....(:-( however we can get internet radio to work which is cool. we use "tunein radio" app. works great. we found that you need , for some reason , to turn the eq on the ipod but it's fine.
The sound of this thing is really amazing. It makes the crumby iPhone/iPod sound almost ...ALMOST like a real hi-fi device.
But setting the B&W Zep is only for casual listening, not something you'd sit in front of for critical or more direct listening. Looks great in an office, home office, studio or off to the side.
Bowkins makes some real amazing loudspeakers, but why not go after that iPhone user who knows very little about great sound!
A few weeks ago I went to a store and saw one of these. The store owner acted all friendly but became unfriendly when I turned around and walked out of the store when I saw that the entire back of this thing is made out of chrome plastic, not steel.
@TheAbelli Really??? You've actually heard both? I'd agree that the Bose plays a bit louder without distortion... but it just doesn't beat the clarity of this thing... music almost sounds muffled through the Bose. I'd bet $100 that if you did a blind test, not know which was **BOSE** and which was B&W, you'd pick this.... that Bose name is blinding to some... just carries so much weight. just my thoughts.
Sorry I missed the original comment to reply to. I would say that for a dock it goes very loud and has great bass. Keep in mind when compared to a normal subwoofer you will simply not get the same performance. If you want a very high quality sound out of a small package I would say this is the best dock I have heard.
@OzzyVanHalen I'd say no, based on my experience with this. This has clear sound but probably not what you're looking for if you want to rock, particularly outdoors. This is more suited to jazz indoors at reasonable levels than what you're talking about.
I picture you wanting an old fashioned high-powered boom box but with an ipod dock. For some damned reason it seems like the whole world of ipods just isn't supposed to mix with that. Cultural change, marketing decisions or whatever, I can't find what you're talking about.
You can make a home ipod based stereo for the price of this but I don't think Apple wants you pissing people off in the park with an ipod. Unless it's because you're wandering around oblivious with buds in your ears. ;)
This B&W butchers the Bose in sound quality, not even close. Like with speakers B&W is several classes above Bose in sound, built quality and all around design.
The dude who said Bose is better doesn't know what he's saying. I have a few Bose products and have compared the Zeppelin to the Sound Dock. This system really makes the Bose sound very muffled and bassy. Even Bose's Soundock 10 doesn't match up to these and they're more expensive.
@mahlerianvidz That's what I've been saying all along.. compared to anything in it's price range the Bose is very muffled an boomy... not a good sound at all.
I wish folks didn't just walk into the Apple store, head straight to the *BOSE* box and head straight to the checkout counter... if they took the time to sample other products they'd be shocked.
no, it does not have bluetooth. When docked though is when you get the best sound as bluetooth has a limited bandwidth and would not do this dock justice
is it just me or are all the Zeppelin videos always playing some peaceful music?? we really need some LED ZEPPELIN on the mofo Zeppelin speakers. Definated need Dazed and Confused video up here.....well anything with bass.
i heard bass songs on this this, or songs that is Rock or Hip Hop are not as good, and acoustic songs are the best....is this true???/ show some hip hop or more bass based songs~
Great review. I bought a Zeppelin yesterday and can give a few updates. The base is no longer a separate piece but instead comes attached to the unit. And the Zeppelin is now "Works with iPhone" rated so no need to switch to airplane mode.
I also have a Bose Sound Dock Portable, which I consider to be best in its class for a *portable* unit as well as an excellent speaker system. It's a great portable device.
But the Zeppelin is definitely the best iPod speaker system on the market.
Thanks for your comment. The HK go+play is built with 2 woofers, while the B&W has 2 tweeters, 2 mid-range drivers and one 5' subwoofer so its design is more complex and offers superior dimension and details. The bass is powerful and treble is clear. Even audiophile magazines such as The Absolute Sound and What Hi Fi voted it as the best premium ipod dock of 2009.
HK is a good mass market brand but having some HK speakers myself I don't think it will stack up to an audiophile product.
#3 As a stand alone product the Zepp has/had received MUCH more exposure
#4 When you use the term "superior" I must ask, are you basing this purely on stats or have you actually heard the GP. If you actually read the Absolute Sound than you MUST know better than to base a comment off of stats.
#4.5 The Zepp 5" woof distorts FAR sooner than the Go+Play's deeper dual 3.5" inchers
@psustud5327 You've misunderstood my reply. #2-> I was referring to the Zeppelin, not the go+play. #4-> Again I was referring to the Zepp, not the gp. I did read the Absolute Sound because I was a subscriber, and they did vote the Zepp as the best ipod dock for that year.
I assure you... if you ever get the chance to hear an original Go+Play... you'd place it right next to the Zepp.. Yes the Zepp has a *small* edge. Though I'd still pick the Go+Play over it since I can play mine so much louder than a Zepp with no distortion, which is important to me. I realize, and respect, the fact that, others have much different priorities however.
Also, yes B&W as a brand is superior to HK... but we both now that brand rep. is less of a factor when it comes to iPod docks.
@psustud5327 You're entitled to your opinion. For me, the quality of the music is far more important than the quantity. I want a product that reproduces music......not earthquakes.
@psustud5327 Amendment.... ***original*** Harmon/Kardon Go+Play was the best sounding **for the money*** still.. cost as no issue.. if the Zepp is a 10 the Go+Play was a 9-9.5... then it's Portable and $299 vs. $499 (yes, I actually take mine everywhere). The Go+Play plays louder and and with much less distortion.
@DowningB Get the ***original*** Harmon/Kardon GO+PLAY (ie, not the version that slopes forward) and you'll see it's truly the best portable player. Compare them side by side and it's just so much clearer (separate tweeters) and the bass is so much deeper and tigher... honestly, I've heard them side-by-side. (take it home and the bass is even deeper than in stores and NOT boomy, sloppy nor exaggerated.
Very nice. But I will stick with my Portable Bose. I feel that battery operation is a must. To me a dock needs to be truly portable. For playing in the home.........I don't need or want an ipod dock. I have spent a fair amount of money on my home stereo system and I just use an Apple Airport to wirelessly connect my iTunes directly from my 24" iMac computer to my Yamaha stereo receiver. Now THAT's "room filling"! Nice dock though if that is your primary system......
I don't know why people gave you thumbs down, what you said is TRUE. Bose? one of the most overrated companies ever..building a rep through hype & availability rather than genuine quality. B&O has always been a hit or miss company. Harman/Kardon offers HI & LOW end which is no sin to do. None can touch B&W.
@ykliu1995 Agree 100%. I wouldn't put B&O next to Bose as far as the "all show no go" category, but they're definitely over priced. A $10,000 set of B&O speakers sound equivalent to a $1500 set of speakers matched to a decent $600 receiver... I'm not exaggerating, but I understand the uber rich valuing their stunning design over sound (since they do sound good enough, right).... BTW, has anyone seen/heard the new B&O ipod dock? Definitely not worth $1000...
@ykliu1995 I understand your comment regarding the brands and general... but honestly dude, go hear this stuff before making the comments... Brand reputation is pretty much out the window when it comes to "Made for iPod. I agree B&W is WORLDS better than Harmon (Bose who??).. but as far as their docks are concerned, they're matched very VERY well and one is hundreds cheaper. Go hear a Harmon/Kardon GO+PLAY (again original, not the GO+MINI that slopes forward and fits the iPod touch/iPhone).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is not for the Audiophile. Because I AM one, and Bose is the way to go. B&W is shit. Also, dude, you have to send that piece of junk back to the PR company.
@thechoice33 Haha... they just don't know any better... but doesn't it just boil your blood to see someone walk into a store, sample nothing at all, just pick the Bose box up and walk to the checkout counter... I see it all the time and I just want to intervene SOO BADLY!
One other thing: You can use internet radio on this dock, you just have to upgrade the firmware.
Once you've done that, turn it off and hold the play/pause button down on the remote until the little red LED flashes one. That turns the amplifier muting off and lets you stream internet radio.
I suggest if anyone buys this get a power conditioner with it. Unfortunately it's fairly picky about power. Apart from that birilol was right: it is orgasm XD
I bought one as soon as they were released and they sound fantastic for an ipod dock although now days i would say the new jm focal dock is a bit better

TestifyBrother 2 years ago 2
@TheAbelli Really??? You've actually heard both? I'd agree that the Bose plays a bit louder without distortion... but it just doesn't beat the clarity of this thing... music almost sounds muffled through the Bose. I'd bet $100 that if you did a blind test, not know which was **BOSE** and which was B&W, you'd pick this.... that Bose name is blinding to some... just carries so much weight. just my thoughts.

well i was actually looking for zollotech to answer my question
OzzyVanHalen 2 years ago
Sorry I missed the original comment to reply to. I would say that for a dock it goes very loud and has great bass. Keep in mind when compared to a normal subwoofer you will simply not get the same performance. If you want a very high quality sound out of a small package I would say this is the best dock I have heard.
zollotech 2 years ago
@zollotech thanks for your help ill probably buy this dock
but what satidog said "this is only good for jazz music" is this true?
does this system sound great with rock N roll music too and maybe a little bit of metal?
like bands like Metallica, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC ect...
OzzyVanHalen 2 years ago
@zollotech so your saying this would out perform regular 200 watt Klipsch sub? lol
moomee237 1 year ago
@moomee237 not at all. I am saying that it outperforms any iPod/iPhone dock I have listened too.
zollotech 1 year ago
how loud can this system go?
i mostly use ipod docks for outdoor use
im looking for an ipod dock that can go VERY loud while still maintaining a clear sound quality
i also want a ipod dock that has a good thumping bass.
does this system meet all my requirements?
OzzyVanHalen 2 years ago
@OzzyVanHalen I'd say no, based on my experience with this. This has clear sound but probably not what you're looking for if you want to rock, particularly outdoors. This is more suited to jazz indoors at reasonable levels than what you're talking about.
satidog 2 years ago
@satidog well do u have a suggestion of what would be the right system that meets my requirements?
OzzyVanHalen 2 years ago
I picture you wanting an old fashioned high-powered boom box but with an ipod dock. For some damned reason it seems like the whole world of ipods just isn't supposed to mix with that. Cultural change, marketing decisions or whatever, I can't find what you're talking about.
You can make a home ipod based stereo for the price of this but I don't think Apple wants you pissing people off in the park with an ipod. Unless it's because you're wandering around oblivious with buds in your ears. ;)
satidog 2 years ago
@OzzyVanHalen Zepp is a hair better than my fav - Harmon/Karmon Go+Play (original).
If you want something that plays VERY loud and with VERY low distortion get the GO+PLAY
Dude... I tailgate with mine and it's actually portable...

This B&W butchers the Bose in sound quality, not even close. Like with speakers B&W is several classes above Bose in sound, built quality and all around design.
Like comparing BMW to a KIA.
bsod4u2 2 years ago
The dude who said Bose is better doesn't know what he's saying. I have a few Bose products and have compared the Zeppelin to the Sound Dock. This system really makes the Bose sound very muffled and bassy. Even Bose's Soundock 10 doesn't match up to these and they're more expensive.
mahlerianvidz 2 years ago
@mahlerianvidz That's what I've been saying all along.. compared to anything in it's price range the Bose is very muffled an boomy... not a good sound at all.
I wish folks didn't just walk into the Apple store, head straight to the *BOSE* box and head straight to the checkout counter... if they took the time to sample other products they'd be shocked.

Hi,
Does this docking station stream music with the iphone 3Gs?
Thx, Keith
hacksawhoughton 2 years ago
no, it does not have bluetooth. When docked though is when you get the best sound as bluetooth has a limited bandwidth and would not do this dock justice

@hacksawhoughton I believe the newest version does now... probably too late though right, lol

Correction..Harman/Kardon used to offer high end..but nothing today that could be considered audiophile. at least that i know of.
Danyelli1976 2 years ago
@Danyelli1976 no speakers... though their receivers could be considered "Mid-Fi" and pretty solid. (similar to a Denon or Yamaha)

DowningB 2 years ago
Hi,
I'm think of buying a Zeppelin but doesn't look like it has a headphone port. Can you confirm this for me pls? Thanks a million.
ASpringSymphony 2 years ago
Honestly, the Harmon Kardon Go+Play is the best sounding portable unit.... if you hear it, I'm sure you'll agree.
psustud5327 2 years ago
Thanks for your comment. The HK go+play is built with 2 woofers, while the B&W has 2 tweeters, 2 mid-range drivers and one 5' subwoofer so its design is more complex and offers superior dimension and details. The bass is powerful and treble is clear. Even audiophile magazines such as The Absolute Sound and What Hi Fi voted it as the best premium ipod dock of 2009.
HK is a good mass market brand but having some HK speakers myself I don't think it will stack up to an audiophile product.
ASpringSymphony 2 years ago
@ASpringSymphony Wrong.
#1 The HK Go+Play is made with 2 woofs+2 tweets
#2 The Absolute Sound Never Reviewed the GP
#3 As a stand alone product the Zepp has/had received MUCH more exposure
#4 When you use the term "superior" I must ask, are you basing this purely on stats or have you actually heard the GP. If you actually read the Absolute Sound than you MUST know better than to base a comment off of stats.
#4.5 The Zepp 5" woof distorts FAR sooner than the Go+Play's deeper dual 3.5" inchers
psustud5327 8 months ago
@psustud5327 You've misunderstood my reply. #2-> I was referring to the Zeppelin, not the go+play. #4-> Again I was referring to the Zepp, not the gp. I did read the Absolute Sound because I was a subscriber, and they did vote the Zepp as the best ipod dock for that year.
ASpringSymphony 8 months ago
I assure you... if you ever get the chance to hear an original Go+Play... you'd place it right next to the Zepp.. Yes the Zepp has a *small* edge. Though I'd still pick the Go+Play over it since I can play mine so much louder than a Zepp with no distortion, which is important to me. I realize, and respect, the fact that, others have much different priorities however.
Also, yes B&W as a brand is superior to HK... but we both now that brand rep. is less of a factor when it comes to iPod docks.
psustud5327 8 months ago
@psustud5327 You're entitled to your opinion. For me, the quality of the music is far more important than the quantity. I want a product that reproduces music......not earthquakes.
ASpringSymphony 8 months ago
@psustud5327 Amendment.... ***original*** Harmon/Kardon Go+Play was the best sounding **for the money*** still.. cost as no issue.. if the Zepp is a 10 the Go+Play was a 9-9.5... then it's Portable and $299 vs. $499 (yes, I actually take mine everywhere). The Go+Play plays louder and and with much less distortion.
amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002GHBTNC/ref=sr_1_2_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1308375279&sr=8-2&condition=new
The Zepp is definitely solid though.
psustud5327 8 months ago
@DowningB Get the ***original*** Harmon/Kardon GO+PLAY (ie, not the version that slopes forward) and you'll see it's truly the best portable player. Compare them side by side and it's just so much clearer (separate tweeters) and the bass is so much deeper and tigher... honestly, I've heard them side-by-side. (take it home and the bass is even deeper than in stores and NOT boomy, sloppy nor exaggerated.
psustud5327 8 months ago

I only know Bowers and Wilkins and Harman/Kardon... could please someone tell me more and which are better?

You can look at Bang & Olufsen. They have great sound quality. I havent heard Bowers and Wilkins but Harman/Kardon is very very good.

Yes! I agree :) Get ready for a new Zeppelin MINI!
PaisteGB 2 years ago
Don't think so, I would say W&W is between B&O and Harman Kardon
HypnoticMusic 2 years ago
Dude have you ever heard a B&W? its 100 times better than B&O, 200 times better than Harman/Kardon, and 1000 better than Bose!
ykliu1995 2 years ago
I don't know why people gave you thumbs down, what you said is TRUE. Bose? one of the most overrated companies ever..building a rep through hype & availability rather than genuine quality. B&O has always been a hit or miss company. Harman/Kardon offers HI & LOW end which is no sin to do. None can touch B&W.
Danyelli1976 2 years ago 2
@ykliu1995 Agree 100%. I wouldn't put B&O next to Bose as far as the "all show no go" category, but they're definitely over priced. A $10,000 set of B&O speakers sound equivalent to a $1500 set of speakers matched to a decent $600 receiver... I'm not exaggerating, but I understand the uber rich valuing their stunning design over sound (since they do sound good enough, right).... BTW, has anyone seen/heard the new B&O ipod dock? Definitely not worth $1000...
psustud5327 8 months ago
@ykliu1995 I understand your comment regarding the brands and general... but honestly dude, go hear this stuff before making the comments... Brand reputation is pretty much out the window when it comes to "Made for iPod. I agree B&W is WORLDS better than Harmon (Bose who??).. but as far as their docks are concerned, they're matched very VERY well and one is hundreds cheaper. Go hear a Harmon/Kardon GO+PLAY (again original, not the GO+MINI that slopes forward and fits the iPod touch/iPhone).
psustud5327 8 months ago
thats where you wrong my friend. You should hear B&W and then hear if you still think the same about B&O and H/K.

This is not for the Audiophile. Because I AM one, and Bose is the way to go. B&W is shit. Also, dude, you have to send that piece of junk back to the PR company.

First off...it was sent back as that was the deal as I said before. You just showed you are not an audiophile by saying Bose is for the audiophile

One other thing: You can use internet radio on this dock, you just have to upgrade the firmware.
Once you've done that, turn it off and hold the play/pause button down on the remote until the little red LED flashes one. That turns the amplifier muting off and lets you stream internet radio.
