lol Actually they are a mix between F-5s and T-38 trainers they look like F-5's but the nose cone is a bit different and they are 2 seaters which are trainers. The F-5's and T-38's look almost Identical even the 2 seat versions but the T-38 has a different shaped nosecone. They did make an F-5 2 seater but the nose of those aircraft are way more slender. As for the F-4 comment the F-4 is almost as big as the F-14 Tomcat and not nearly as good of a dog fighter.

@USSWISCONSIN64 Actually as above my comment stands as to the exception i forgot about the A-4's there not F-4's the F-4 is the Phantom which is just as big as the Tomcat but the A-4 Skyhawk is the aircraft that you see Viper in in the movie. The A-4's were just as fast and agile as the F-5's in almost every way. The only reason we still have F-5's is because the A-4's couldnt stand the test of time and were seriously over their service limit.

Yeah, Mig-28s and F-5s look very similar but not exactly. The planes in this video are Mig-28s, but the reason there's such a resemblance is because The US made the F-5 to be as close to the Mig-28 as possible so that they could use it in training exercises as an enemy aircraft.

c'mon TOG GUN is a propaganda film to atract young boys to join the U.S. NAVY. Film itself is full of "misstakes". First of all F14 is designed for BVR. Its main weapon is AIM "Phoenix" missile developed to destroy enemy on 100 mile distance not from eyesight like in the film. Any MIG of that time with a regulary trained pilot would easily outmaneuver the "Tom Cat" in a close combat.

@JoaoJMatias A Mig is a Russian (then Soviet) fighter plane. They've been the principle adversary of Western Air Forces since the 1950s. The "Mig-28" in Top Gun is not a real plane. Since they couldn't get actual Migs to film during the Cold War they just used American F-5s that were painted black and had a red star on the vertical stabilizers.
