Genereally the outward planets are classified as gas planets (Jupiter; Saturn, Neptun, Uranus), the inner planets are classified as non-gas planets and show up with a hard surface -> demarcation line is the Kuiper-Belt. F.e. Merkur hasn't even an athmosphere.The reason for gas and non-gas planets is a result of the development of planets, in the outwards areas gases could persist while this wasn't possible in areas near the sun. By the way Pluto is now classified as dwarf-planet.
