They were probably picking up the signal from a spacecraft that was travelling past the field of monitoring. That would explain why it was so short and never returned to the same spot. Just an alien spacecraft flying past.

Have you ever thought of this? Think about how we search so deeply for aliens, what if they are in fact searching for us? What if they already know about us, and need us or care about species? The inner galaxy has more life in it that perhaps was aware that we were trying to get some kind of sound translated out of whateve phase level type that the ETs resonate at. I don't think they use sound exactly. I think it is more of telepathy, but they are aware of our existence and so they decided to make a sound for our detection that one time.
