What a beautifully produced, brilliant sound in her upper register. What a find performer as well. Not many singers today are in good enough shape to be as limber on stage as she appears to be in this video. Behrens was one of the best!
She is awakening from a nightmare where her husband is dying because of her... the reason being she cannot bear children... Although she is married to a mortal she has not become mortal yet. "Casts no shadow".
According to the "fairy-tail-principles" in a wedding of different natures, if the Fairy Princess cannot be made a real human by her husband's love... HE has to die.
At the end she (and HE) are redeemed by her capacity to love other humans... Barak and his Wife.
her interpretation was always rather intense and and interesting. we were all very excited at the met for her debut which i believe was fidelio and it was quite smashing. thanks for ur post...great choice
behrens later alwys sang the färberin. but she's so good here as the kaiserin! gorgeous voice and actress, pahantastic high notes. not that the unaccompanied note towards the end is a d flat (half step higher than high c).
Other great Farberinnen who also sang Kaiserin earlier in their careers were Gwyneth Jones und Eva Marton. Probably Kaiserin is the more grateful of the two roles. A bit like the difference between Chrysothemis and Elektra.
2:55 is a high D flat. what a strong, healthy, beautiful and even voice!

I think ive said it on every video of her, but there are very few sopranos with an upper register as beautiful as hers.

Never mind; the wonderful conductor of this performance is Christoph von Dohnanyi.

i heard Jones sang both in the same night. i feel like die weib is better for jones. far more earthy and sexual, fits her better.
