  • My parents went to Europe on this ship's maiden voyage. I have many color 35M/M xlides of her, that were taken while they were on board.

  • My father was a shipfitter at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company during and after WWII, and helped build the beautiful stacks. I have read a letter he wrote, describing the swimming pool - I believe he said it was of a silver-colored tile, and stunning to see. I certainly hope it can be preserved.

  • I'm Canadian, and and I support Save the SS United States! It's a beautiful ship!

  • Does anybody know the name of the song at 0:45?

  • great video. The SS United States is quite a marvel. She's magnificient. Although i am not American, i still agree this is the greatest ocean liner ever built by the greatest nation on earth. God bless William F. Gibbs and the SS United States, and America.

  • the men who built the SS us are more than half the men youll ever be

  • I smile somewhat wryly at the 'monumental achievement' of the ship smashing the speed record of the RMS Queen Mary. Hardly a meaningful comparison, given that the QM was launched in 1934 and the SS United States in 1952!

  • @crossleydd42 Shut up. The Big U is the greatest ship ever built. To insult her is to insult the nation that bears her name.

  • @bobkingist A very erudite comment, bobkingist. It might be worth pointing out that the very essence of debate is free speech.

  • scraping her would be like crubiling up the decluration of independace and tossing it in the garbege like it's no big deal well it is a big deal if only air lines didn't rear ther ugly heds she would still be in servase as the fastest ocean liner ever plus it sux that lots of gr8 historic liners wer scraped like the ss us sisters and the great western and the ss great eastern but no gr8 liner shood be scraped lets hope the ss us will be saved and restored and reclaim the speed recard ! :)

  • im not being funny but i believe that americans should save every last one of their old cruise liners, i eman, to be honest, you're not exactly known for them, the few that are mention every so often should be mentioned, they arn't like british ships ,we have old cruisers to spare, well, we did but cunard soon sorted that out.

  • In light of all that this ship represents, how badly do you think Obama and Pelosi would LOVE to scrap her ?

  • @imallpissedoff Not gonna hapen, thank god, Today 2-1-2011, man bought her for 3million to rebuild, and send to the sea, Ill be on that first voyage, im sick a lookin at this beauty roit away, this is great news, cant wait!

  • @4624tone, the USS united states conservancy bought it. It's not going out to sea, it's staying in Philly or going to NY or Miami as major floating hotel, resort, restaurants and a possible casino.

  • @EastCoastDude99 Your right i over thougt, the media made it sound better than it was, it s gonna be mall n resturants!

  • @4624tone......but at least it will be preserved and not sent to the scrap yard. I just hope it stays in Philly=)

  • @EastCoastDude99 yes me too, thanks

  • @EastCoastDude99 wats with u and turnig her into a casino she is 2 gr8 a ship to be a lowsy casino i say she should be given the same steam engines as our air craft carryers after all the prototyps of those engines wer put on the ss us and she sould hav the same props that our navy subs hav 4 extra speed so casino or flag ship of the united states of america, hotel or super liner, she sould return to the seas as a steam ocean liner a ship luver like me wants to sea her bak in servas as a liner!

  • @j241865........Im not the one proposing the casino idea. It's been floating around for years now. I support it because its one of the ways she can be saved without just private funding. It's not going to be back in service as an ocean liner, the ship is totally gutted on the inside and it wont compete with modern cruise ships. On top of that, in a day when people are always in a hurry, ships like this are replaced with air travel across the Atlantic. The ship is retired.

  • Do you know what :)

start something great showing the world that shes coming back :)

Just get some good quality ship-paint and collect some brave people, start

derust, clean and repainting the red white black coloured smokestacks,

put back an american flag to her rear flagpole

so anybody can see shes coming back AND SHE IS NOT DEAD awaiting the scrapyard. Also go and repaint her name in original golden letters.

Jesus if I would be there I would bring hell to freeze that she gets back her life.

  • why do you not ask the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation for helping saving this greatest ship of all? They have billions of dollars waiting for doing good things, so why not spending some money into the pride of the USA?

  • @Haffschlappe..........it looks like the ship will be totally restored and turned into a floating Casino in South Philly. That was the news that broke this week, but obviously alot of details must be worked out.

  • @EastCoastDude99

great news, oh i would love the idea that Big U is saved...

I would even love to see her restored and refited with new engines and machinery to regular " retro-style" cruising service on the 7 seas, but that might become too expensive, so just try to save her from the indish guys cutting her apart, and maybe in a better time when people admire more the good things from the 40s, 50s, she gets a second life cuising again. Good luck ! I will keep wachthing her

    in the web.

  • @Haffschlappe her engines are what makes her unique. when she was constructed she was fitted out with Iowa class battleship engines. her plant is one of the most powerful steam driven plants on the planet. short of an aircraft carrier.

  • Why do not all the americans put some money in a huge pot to restoring the Big U,

Oh I am german but I love this wonderfull american idea of archieving soemthing together, so dear americans show that you are still able to do not things because they are easy, try to archieve goals that are hard, remember JFKs idea, dont ask for what the state can do 4U, ask what you can do for your state and your ideals.

If possible I would come over helping restoring that wonderfull ship!

  • It would be great if a volunteer organization was formed and had the word spread nationally through all media forms. Out of 310 million people, at least a few thousand would sign up to help with her restoration.

  • We have the RMS Queen Mary here in Long Beach, and she is a beautiful ship and recently just boarded her for the first time ever. awe inspiring. This ship, SS US, is also beautiful. They don't make them like that anymore. Transatlantic liners were glorious, beautiful and from a bygone era. We're lucky to have RMS QM in our back yard, where here, far from her home, she is very much loved by us and appreciated.

  • I wish I could embed this into my own personal page. Since I couldn't, I did the next best and created a link to this video.

  • I'm glad that a wealthy benefactor donated to save this ship; a piece of Americana that mayor nutball was ready to sell/scrap to fill in Philly's fuck up budget deficit. What an asshole!!!

  • My fav site in Philly. I knew she was special the moment I saw her from a distance. My husband exclaimed, "That's the SS United States."

  • I think this ship should be restored, and that they should make it a retro cruise ship and it could be owned by Cunard line,I think if the titanic had never hit an iceberg and sunk,I think she would still be here today and in service.

  • amazing an incredibly generous donation has steered her away from the scrapyard for the foreseeable future :)

  • lol flintstones music

  • im british but i have to say shes beautifull

  • lets not let it end up like ss america okay

  • Join the Facebook group known as:

SS United States as Roving Ambassador/Hospital Ship

  • amazing that people just let her die poor ship!!!!!!!

  • I have contacted the White House with a long message, I hope they get involved to save this ship!

  • @Abricialio i think that this is a good thing and it would be a crime to scrap this great ship, but i dont think the usgovernment willget involved in this project especially these days. can u imagine what they would say if obama spent millions on an "old ship"?

  • The fixing of this ship would be around $800,000 dollars.

  • that wouldn't buy the fuel..

  • @Abricialio

I get it could be restored in some oversea shipyard in India or China for about $ 7 Mil U.S.

  • Check out the CruiseLineHistory website. The ship is heading to breakers yard :(

The NCL want to scrap it, also other company want to sink the ship in Manhatten so the divers can look in the ship...

And the United States Foundation commented really angry on the news that she would be scrapped.

  • i have seen her many times when i trucked to philidelphia and everytime i was there in the area of the S.S. United States i just had to tell my customers i'm dropping trailer and driving over there to see her. when i got there it was like seeing a loved one you know very well and you hate to see the condition or even hear someone telling you she has not much time left. and even though i'm 29 she is impressive and it makes me sad to see her slip away like this. and i'll admit i shead a tear

  • I saw her again a couple of months ago, what a shame...I remember her from 1953 as well as the SS Constitution.

  • @Steelhorsetransferco Well said dude, well said

  • I'm in VA. and remember seeing the ship rusting at a coal pier near Newport News Shipyard(where constructed) before being towed to Philidelphia around 1992(after an overseas purchase fell thru). Sadly, I believe the time has run out- they should have seriously tried to preserve the ship if only to prevent deterioration if not full restoration. I had hopes for an east-coast version of the "Queen Mary" hotel-museum here in Norfolk. Oh, well.

  • The Mariner's Museum in Newport News, VA. has many items & fittings from the ship, including the main dining room wall sculpture & the black lacquer buffet cabinet w/bronze mod-art lamps that was positioned below the sculpture. They also have one of the ship's propellers outside the rear of the museum. Worth seeing.

  • Make me some soda cans.

  • The United States doesn't deserve the scrap yard, to scrap her would be an unforgivable crime against the US as a whole because she bares the name of our nation

  • Hey Baby, I know you don't remember me, but I was a child when I was one of your passengers in 1962. I still love you and will never stop.

  • A great liner, should definitely be kept as a museum piece.

  • I wana get into the ship yard that thats in soo bad and get a closer look at it. I drive by it all the time.

  • What a beguiling chapter in American History. In many ways she does represent the tragic positions of our economy. If the president is looking for new ways to create Jobs, then this is it, hundreds would be employed in the refurbishment and many trainees will serve on Board, maybe she may not do the transatlantic route but she can still do the East coast, Portland- Gulf of Mexico. If there is legacy for the administration then this should be it.

  • @willmun1 now thats the best idea i have heard yet. that would be a fantastic way to create alot of jobs and a way to give back to our wonderful country one of its greatest and most loved icons.

let it be a beacon of how great and creative the minds who dared to dream and make that dream a reality!!

  • So its still floating huh? Cant be much left-

  • actually the ship is still floating and the structure is in good condition. She is slowly rusting and getting worse though, but she is definitely savable.

  • Yea well sorta, I think the sand has built up under it because it doesn't tug at its lines at all or anything but it is still there and in tact. The props are on deck too so they wont be ruined. I think its definitely still good.

  • she was fast. But certainly not the finest. Italian and French ships were way more elegant and were engineering marvels. Americans tend to consider what they built the best and there is nothing else....but very often they should sit down and learn from others.

  • US was certainly built better then italian liners after all Andrea Doria is wreck at bottom of atlantic and action of her crew was not shining moment in maritime history ala achillie lauro

  • The ss america should have a video too!

  • i hear she's for sale again for $25 mill.

  • I can't believe that the government lets her sit there, rusting like that. She deserves much better, she needs to be a floating hotel and museum like the Queen Mary. It's awfully sad to see her like this... :(

  • Come visit The SS United States Group on Yahoo... We have the largest online photo archives of the United States to be found anywhere.

Friendly and informative message board; databases, files and links full of SS United States information.

    Cheers!

  • was the united states biger then titanic?

  • Yes, longer, heavier, and even faster. Except, the Titanic was one of the most luxurious ship ever made. The 2 ships that only compare to her are the HMHS Britainnic and the SS Normandie.

  • You're forgetting the RMS Olympic, which was longer than the Titanic and outlasted both the Britannic and the Titanic

  • not heavier, Titanic was heavier than Big U but smaller in size and slower.

  • Yes its much larger and much faster than Titanic. But Titanic weighed more, because construction techniques were not as good back then.

  • queen mary 2 bigger than all of thse ships u mentioned?

  • Yes queen Mary was bigger than the two, but slower than the United States

  • Actually I was incorrect. The United States weighed more than Titanic, but displaced less water. I mixed up the numbers.

  • and the point of the Seig Hail was what? To get you the attention that mommy and daddy not give you?

  • i heard that the norwigen crusie lines bought her

  • n i think they should reluanch it and be the second ocean liner of this century that would be in use for travelling (first being the queen mary 2)

  • she was built for speed and was ready to go into war as a troop transport. , the 8 boilers - IOWA Class Babcock & Wilcox Design helped her shatter the record held by the queen mary on 3/4 power.remember!,the only wood on her was the chopping blocks in the kitchen!..ahead of its time!

  • Her engines were intended for a cancelled aircraft carrier. which were 4 60,000 turbines.

  • Thats one fast ship. 36knots, damn!

  • She went faster than that; her top speed was a whopping 44 knots!

  • NCL are idiots!!

  • She was not that success as one wanted to believe us. At the end she was no match yes not even here speed witch make a crossing on here not that comfortable. Passengers where disappointed by here interiors and found here to metallic. And passengers turned away to the competitors Like QM, QE, Liberty, Nieuw Amsterdam and here fleet mate America. And when the trans Atlantic era ended she was gone lay up well others still sailing cruises. She lay up more years then she have sailed an empty hulk

  • If the US was so proud on this ship why not have done something in the past 30 years. So there is no historic ties with this ship. 30 years of lay-up proved that. She have here chances but AL ended on the enormous cost bringing her up to date. And in this day of age no money will spent on her. I believe she's at here end and will be dismantled. Certainly now NCL have here put back on the sale list. The only gamble is how long will she have. sad but realistic....

  • Comment removed

  • Too bad her interiors were ugly compared to the English Ocean Liners like the Queen Mary or the French Normandie.

  • i agree but it was built for speed

  • England will never beat that record

  • Really? They did in 1990 with the Hoverspeed Great Britain.

  • beautiful ship! my grand mother had always told me of the Norway and the SS United States and how beautiful she was. and now to see her like this is a shame. are there any plans for her?

  • I love that ship!!!!

  • wow I finally know a bit of her history. I see that ship everyday. It looks amazing and should be restored. It looks like its been sitting for quite some time.

  • My father served as a storekeeper on the ship. I remember watching it sail down the James River. I was 6 at the time and remember it was strange not to have dad home...in the 1950s the family was intact !! We had beds from the SS US that were fitted for stationary use. These became available when the builder removed all the bunks because he didn't like the design.

  • I still see it sit in the delaware river in philadelphia. It is the custom of the usa to abandon great ideas all too often. Lets restore her!

  • The two ships, S.S America and the S.S United States were among the finest ocean liners ever built. Since the tragic demise to her sister, I believe it is even more important now to restore the S.S United States to its old glory. There is much that can be done as Queen Mary's success shows how well these liners can be utilized.

  • when is this documentry going to air? Or better yet, where can I get my own copy!?

  • i she now in the philadephia naval base?

  • yes she is in philadephia pier 82 i think from wikipedia

  • shes not at the naval base, shes about 2 miles up the river, right across from the new ikea on delaware ave

  • why can't the turn the ship in to a hotel/casino? you can preserve her and her history, but most importantly she will be a money maker.

  • for technology and speed the big U is better but in terms of revolutionary design the Normandie comes out on top.

  • in terms of beauty the SS Normandie is the best looking ocean liner ever

ever seen her classy Art Deco interior?

  • yeah, I've seen the interior on an old tv series called "The Liners", quite different in appearance to other liners. I can certainly agree that in terms of design, Normandie was revolutionary when compared to other liners at the time. Her design set the standard for all future liners.

  • However in technology, the United Sates is superior as it benifited from what was learned during WW2.

It was designed to be able to converted to troopship in a week and her engines, which were designed for aircraft carriers gave her a impressive turn of speed, which at the time meant a great deal in gettin publicity and passengers.

  • She should be saved like Queen Mary. Americas first blue ribbon holder and to my knowledge is still the fastest ocean liner to cross the north atlantic. That alone deserves her a place in history.

  • Nice footage except the typical annoying nationalistic pathos...simply far too much and far too onesided...

Nevertheless - the US was a great liner. But I fear it will follow the same sad destiny like almost every famous liner did before.

  • i bet your from a forign country

  • Normandie and SSUS were both great in their times. Both are some of my favorites. SSUS, no doubt, wins in the area of technology. But, you must admit, the Normandie's interiors are possibly the greatest ever seen on the ocean.

  • true true and im srry if i made any remarks that offended you

  • No offense taken. I was just adding my opinion to the topic.

  • no ss united states is more better than normandie ss united sates is faster

  • the Lusitania and Mauretania were both faster than Olympic and TItanic, didn't make them better ships

  • The SS United States was, just like the SS France, introduced at a bad period in maritime history when the airlines were taking over. The only suitable role for the ship, and I really do hope one day it is preserved, would be as a floating hotel and museum.

  • Nothing is impossible, just improbable to a percentage. Norwegian Cruiseline will need to be selfless Cleaver Artfull and Generous to pull this off. These things are not considered attributes of neo capitalist specimens in the Human species from which they spawn.

  • Who are the N.C.L. and what are they going to do?

Whats in it for them? What is Money when the Federal Reserve can make it out of electrons and a keyboard?

  • Norwegian Cruise Line.

  • Now is the time to act... Invite your Democratic hopefuls to do a soundbite on the SS United States the press would fill in the blanks with metaphore. lots of free PR guys.

  • A lot of money will be needed to restore the ship or bring it back to a better shape. It would be nice to see the ship as a floating maritime museum. There are unlimited possibilities with this ship. I was actually thinking a long time ago that a good idea would be putting the ship (restored) with the Intrepid and Concord in NYC as an extra exhibit or museum. (During certain times, the ship can travel to other locations). An NYC counterpart to the Queen Mary.

  • The SS United States site has been updated fully please feal free to ask questions about the ship!

  • Hopefully this beautiful ship will be saved. So please help raise awareness on this ship! Theres a documentary on PBS in May! SAVE THE S.S. UNITES STATES!

  • Hopefully this beautiful ship will be saved. So please help raise awareness on this ship! Theres a documentary on PBS in May! SAVE THE S.S. UNITES STATES!

  • If America Wants to show it's greatness at this point in time They could Make the SS United States the Nation's Flag Ship for toned down Military Response to the World's disasters.

This was her other role was it not?

If a Nation cant respect it's own Icons how can it expect other nations to.

  • my dad served as mate on this ship. he killed a whale while at the wheel. argued with the captain re etiquette of wearing cap indoors. also served on savannah-only us nuclear cargo ship.i saw sister ship of big u wrecked on lanzarote 3 years ago

  • The SS United States needs to be saved. This ship is a huge part of our country. Foundations with links to NCL have said that if ncl couldnt support her anymore that they would discuse other options instead of scrap. Hopefully she will be sailing soon again. Long Live the S.S UNITED STATES

  • Just to put it out in the open

I believe (along with the team I am with) believe the best course of action for this Transatlantic Legend is as a Hotel/Museum/Whatever else you can squeeze in without destroying the ship.

Of course, this requires a whole new Interior...so its not cheap. Exterior restoration is the easy part. Write to your (our) Government, get them to put money into her!!

    -Will

Member of "Save the Classic Liner" team

  • You think this is all you have to do?

These games you and your supposed "team members" are playing do nothing to help the cause. Interesting that several of these names all use the same email address!

    Amateurs with nothing to offer.

  • I would rather have a team full of Amateurs that care then a whole country of professionals that do not care

It took a team of professionals to build the titanic, but only one armature built the ark

It does not matter what experience I or the rest of the group have (Alex has been doing this for over 5 or 6 years) all that matters is that we are attempting to do the unlikely.

And I will never give up, I will not stop fighting for the ship until the last piece of steel is removed

  • of course, if you look at the news, we have already had a major effect on the SS Independence. If it was not for us, she would have been in Singapore by now, on her way to India for scrapping

  • You got quoted in one local newspaper in Guam as an activist group and the whole article was proven to be a fraud today! The Indy was never turned away from Hawaii, the news on that broke this morning. major effect? You lied (again) to get your name out there with a story that was later proven bogus. What else have you done? Nothing. This "group" has done nothing other than cut and paste various gov't agency phone numbers to various websites. With no idea of what they'd do if they saved the Indy.

  • Funny, because even maritime matters is reporting the ship got turned away.

I dont see you doing anything to save the Indy or the United States, but if you have done anything, good luck

at least I dont just sit on my ass and wait for things to happen.

  • If you're quoting maritime matters why not include the fact it was discussed that the Indy has suffered serious structural problems? And if this group of 1 did save the ship where is she going to go? what will you do with her? You have no idea what is involved..look at the Rotterdam project and the millions they had to spend. Doing something with no plan, leaves out the mountain sized obstacles the ship faces, no plan to use her or place her anywhere is doing something? You are a game player.

  • Just because you have not read anything, does not mean we do not have plans

We have already looked into location, cost involved, and have been in contact with at least one person intersted in buying the ship.

Same goes for the SS United States, we have plans laid out quite nicely, cost, location, work that needs to be done. No matter what you may think, we are prepared. We even have had help from those involved in the restoration of the SS Rotterdam. Dont jump to conculsions

  • more bullshit

You should be carefull one never knows who they are speaking to online.

Noticed in your response how your "group" was proven wrong, yet again. Reality seems to be abit hard for you "guys".

  • feel free to inform me. I dont care about groups, or companies. I simply want to give the SS United States, and as many other ships as possible the chance to survive

Like I said, you have said nothing to indicate that you are doing anything to preserve the ship. At least I am trying. I dont wait for things to happen, I help make them happen

  • Then stop playing games with the facts.

Stop passing off info like the Indy being turned away at Hawaii as fact when it was proven not to be true.

Like I said, I know for a fact one of your posts is a flat out lie. I'll remind you again, you never know who you are dealing with online. any amateur online knows that.

What I do is my business but I will promise you one thing. I wouldn't waste my time playing loose with the facts.

  • You have yet to provide any information proving she was not turned away. Ive been reading news for the last 3 hours, and have seen nothing saying she was not turned away

in fact, I did find a statement from the Hawaii Coast Guard saying the reason they turned the ship away was not because of public health concerns, but because of the legal issues involved if the ship was aloud into Hawaii

  • More importantly you of course leave out Maritime Matter's discussion of the Indy was 3 plus days ago. The knowledge that the Indy was never turned away from hawaii CAME OUT THIS MORNING. Gee, can't imagine why you left that out...

  • Wrong again! As usual you're all flap, the Indy as reported in Maritime MAtters was NOT turned away in Hawaii, you're a liar. Shame on you for creating all this emotion to try and raise awareness. You can't even stay on fact. You ahve to make up things to get your point across.

  • I don't even care anymore, the Indy is now laid up in Dubai last I heard

The EPA pressure must have made the owners change their mind or something

Please stop spamming video comments, if you want to bitch, send me a PM.

  • I would quantify the false statements you have posted as spam. You have jumped on every single piece of information that could support your anti NCL positions, relevant or not. When you're called on the numerous inconsistencies in your posts you call it spam..typical. Instead of dealing in fact, when so many other people knew of them, you have cornered yourself with Rueben and eveyone konws his standing these days. Stop spreading these ridiculous lies, grow up.

  • I see..divert the attention from the specifics by stirring the emotions...usually a tacttic of game players like yourself. Apparently your leader Erik James, who has had multiple ID run ins on various liner groups int he past. Got his butt kicked with alot of discrepencies with the Sindy lately. You must be running on a shoestring budget with only 1 computer for Erik and Corey. As Corey has been sendiong emails out via Erik's email address (maybe another ID like he was doing before?)

  • send me a damn like to whatever news you "claim" proves the ship was no turned away

I have read about a dozen or more sites that say the exact oppisate. If your not willing to provide any proof you are telling the truth (i tried to post a link to the coast guard statment, I can PM it to you if you like) all I can assume is that you are lying to get attention.

All i want to to aid in the quest to save the Big U, nothing more, nothing less. I dont want fame or anything, I want to make a difference

  • send me a damn like to whatever news you "claim" proves the ship was no turned away

  • I've been reading these messages and while I do not agree with either of you I have seen the reports today that the ship was not turned away from Hawaii. Rather, she didn't ask to be allowed to.

  • someone wealthy should buy the ship and either turn this ship into a hotel or musieum there is money that can be made it is very rare these days to see something totally american made wake up someone and preserve her maybe donald trumph will do it hopefully he will see this message and do it he is good with things like this .

  • There was such an idea to turned her into a hotel but failed. She and the Queen Mary are the last of this period still around. I would go for a museum.

  • Ladies and gentleman its all but unconfirmed but, I hear the Big U will be scrapped sometime in 2008. NCL jus' can't afford to pay her docking fees let alone restoration. clock is running for Big U.....as it has been for 40yrs. Please help

  • Disney likes to fuck up old things they own. Look at the Spruce Goose and all the holes they cut in it, for example.

  • i can't say that i'm surprised.i really doubted they would spend $200-500 million on a ship that old.

  • Oh No! That just can't happen! She's too much of living history to be scrapped!

  • I'm with you on that comment. I've been thinking the big U should be brought to the west side of manhatten. Next to the intrepid museam it could be a financial gain. Like the queen mary=history

  • she was only very fast. that's it. italian ships from italian line were much more elegant and luxurious; they were the real state of the art ships. and i don t kike italians.....

  • Jet Airplanes suxs.

    Ships is the best.

  • unfortunately ships cannot compete with jet airliners in the most vital area, economic efficiency

time is money in modern society and a single jet airliner usually lasts more years than most ships today

I prefer ships any day though

  • My favorite part of the SSU was the Navajo Lounge. It was very original looking.

  • excellent !!!

  • nice to see mr. miller.... i met also crew memebers from that liner and she deserve a better/brighter future

  • Nice video, can't wait til the whole thing is released. Watching the old footage makes me think that when the US was new,it was a much easier and better time.

  • RMS Titanic = 882 ft long 48,000 tons

SS United States = 990 ft long 53,000 tons

RMS Queen Mary + 1018 ft long 81,000 tons

    SS France/Norway 1035 ft long 66,000 tons

These are listed sizes for these ships.

  • Get real people NCL let a bigger and better ship the SS Norway go I can't see them ever stumping up the cash to save an older smaller ship which will never be economically viable. People want balcony's, multiple swimming pools, all sorts of things this ship is too small to add. Remember it's an ocean liner not a cruise ship.

  • The only way NCL (her current owners) will restore her is if they can start making more money for their sub-brand NCL America. At the moment, NCL America is not making enough profits to restore the Big-U.

Also, her asbestos has already been removed.

  • To restore that ship here would cost $200 million by one estimate. It could be towed to a shipyard in Mexico or Brazil and be restored for maybe $25 million. Only alternative is to scrap her which I do not think is necessary.

  • is she still alive?

  • Letting go is`nt easy... But were at War, broke, and now were probably gonna spank Iran! Money for such thing`s will always be the problem. :(

  • She bares our nation's name, she has held a record for fifty years. SS America has been lost forever, SS United States should be at sea or a museum not sitting at some dock awaiting her fate. If it mean striping her down to her bolts to get rid of the asbestos then do it, I'd rather see the Big U at the bottom of the ocean then scrap metal

  • Its amazing how big she is, and its sad that nothing is being done to help her. The problem is money the problem with all of the great liners has always been money. People do not want to spend that kind of Money to revitalize a big ship, so what did they do they sold them for Money, and all of the scrap metal from it is sold for Money. It really is sad.

  • She is a machine, made of metal by man - She CAN be rebuilt, repaired, preserved but NEVER replaced.

I will not give up on the Big U until I see her at the bottom of the sea or turned into more useless 4x4's that will never see dirt.

If you don't believe in her salvation, good for you - Your postings will NEVER bring her believers down.

  • shut up

  • you said it exexexexexxe7

  • One word ASBESTOS, this will prevent Her being restored into a Memorial, Hotel, or Artificial Reef without at leat 40 Million being thrown at Her...

Too Bad, well they cmae up with the cash for the USS ORISKANY Artifial Reef, but overuns there, would probably doom the start of the same with this Huge Liner.

  • its pretty big ship bigger than the titanic, but not as good.

  • It's still floating, isn't it?

  • Sure is they dont know what to do with it ,if you like ships check out my ship movies they'll blow your mind bud.

  • And Titanic Was Biggir Than The SS Qm

  • Not true, look it up, Titanic was 760x90 and much much smaller displacement. Titanic was biggest in 1912.

  • I frequent the SSU group on Yahoo!, The 1984 auction was the last chance to save the ship. It's bankrupt owner sold off the entire contents of the ship to pay port fees. It is too far gone now to save it in any form even if unlimited amounts of money were available. I wish the Navy would scrap it or sink it. Leaving it to waste away on the waterfront is disgrace not not to mention a hazzard. What a waste, the last superliner lost forever.

  • The auction took place in 1992, not 1984! It is definitely NOT too far gone to save. If you were familiar with what the ship was made of, you would know that. Let's put the money into fully restoring this ship to glory instead of spending
