@hardtalker1 - In the modern world...people respect all martial arts styles and understand that they all have something unique to offer. But for some reason wing chunners are still stuck in the old mentality of this style is better than that.Very old world thinking. No STYLE is complete. Wing Chun is not complete. Adapting, thats what Bruce Lee was good at. I think his message is not to change things but to look for better ways of doing it. Not to be stuck in the groove of tradition. Tradition isn't a bad thing though. Seems to me what's taught in any martial arts dojo is body mechanics. With that knowledge your own fighting style is something that should be allowed to develop naturally through using your own creative mind.

He was from Hong Kong. Never heard that story. There's lots of stories about him, too hard to pin down the truth. The story of the origins of wing chun is quite interesting. As far as I am aware it splintered off into 2 diff versions of the art. Both factions think theirs is the real thing. I think Bruce realised that some of it was useless in actual combat. Everyone differs on what they find useful. Bruce Lee always used glasses, he was either short or long sighted, can't remember which.
@sunfist420 i know its a lil late for a reply to this but i think if bruce had stuck to wing chun i recon with the knowledge he had he would of made it into the perfect fighting system. i havnt learnt biu tze yet but ive heard other ppl say that what bruce said was missing from the system is in biu tze. even so i still think bruce would of improved it beyond what it is had he been able to continue his training in the art.

Also that they practiced blindfolded for hours at a time. Of course he is human, but where hell did he get the energy to train up to 8 hours a day? He's clearly running on a different power source. Even today when you find people who train so hard and long, they ain't no Bruce Lee. He's like a 5000w bulb, guess maybe thats why he died so soon.

@5674trackrunner Remember the scene in Game of Death when fighting Kareem Abdul Jabbar where Bruce jumps into a prone position on the floor and uses his legs to lock up Kareems legs, tripping him over? That's floor work. Techniques delivered while lying on the floor. Moves like that tend to be unexpected in a fight. Most unwelcome if you are a tall guy and your opponent does this type of thing. Some martial arts have more emphasis on this than others.
Well did you think about categories?? Fedor is some 130kg while Bruce is perhaps 50 or so... he would fight as a light weight where he would have a chance to compete at high levels imo
Royce Gracie fought andwon UFC 1 UFC 2 and defeted Kimo and others in UFC 3...no weight limit at the time in the UFC tournament !His brother Rickson also fught people 40 kilos heavier than him and beat them...but..they are very skilled in ground fighting and has a wide experience plus many many fight on !

Ive often wondered though, do you reckon there has been someone in ancient china or japan or anywhere for that matter, as it has been said that some arts originate from India etc. some one that who's skills, speed and technique would've been better than Bruces?
I'd venture to say that there were, and there will be. For a long long time, being a martial artist was a full time career. Martial artists practiced like 5 to 8 hours a day for like 10 years. Today, with modern equipments and with more information readily available, it bounds to happen that a better martial artist will come along.
However, BL will always be remembered as the pioneer, the original master who modernized martial arts, and thus will remain the greatest ;-)
Bruce Lee is only the most famous martial artist as far as I know. He is by no standard the best in anything.
If you're interested, look up Barry Lee a.k.a. The Machine. This man was the teacher of my teacher. He is named the machine because he would train for 15 hours in a single day.
Training is a VERY important aspect of being good . But Bruce Lee took that to the next level , he used his brain a lot , and that's what makes him special .
In my youth I trained in Wing Chun and, later, Kickboxing. Training 15 hours a day is physically unhealthy because the body needs rest to heal and recharge.
I seriously doubt an american navy seal could've took bruce lee in a fight. He was way too fast. It would've been like a little kid fighting an adult. You also realize he is blind folded when he is performing sticky hands. I would put my money on Bruce Lee over a navy seal.

That is why it matters. It is because he is not using his sight to make a decision. He feels and reacts. That is why I said that you realize he is blind folded. The only thing about being blind folded is you tend to be a little more aggressive than you would if you could see. At least that is what I have noticed.

From what I know and not to disrespect Bruce is that he wasn't fully trained in wing chun so he had to come up with his own martial art made up of many other martial arts systems and westernboxing,so he was not a master but just a intermediate student that was extremely physically fit so he could get away with the pretention of being a great fighter in America where nobody knew shit at that time about real Kung Fu.I do believe he wouldn't last long against a pak hok fighter.
Bruce knew the techniques,and the centerline principle,he knew all that worked,he didn't know all the forms,but forms aren't relevant to combat.And Bruce knew the 5 animals of Kung-Fu,tai-chi,preying mantis and other styles as well,he knew more than WIng CHun before coming to America,so he was a master of Kung-Fu.
And combining other martial art systems is a wise idea,it is better than just knowing 1.He wasn't an intermediate student.Bruce defeated a grandmaster in the Northern style named Wong Jak Mon,so Bruce was a great fighter,sorry to burst your bubble.Bruce combined 26 styles,so he would easily destroy a Pak Hok fighter.Bruce also defeated a blackbelt at Ed PArker's 1967 tournament,so Bruce wasn't pretending to be great,he was great.
While I understand where you're coming from and I completely agree that Bruce Lee was an amazing martial artist, I do have to point out that it was not his knowledge of many different styles that made him so. They say a jack of all trades is the master of none. Just because you know several different ways to fight does not make you a great fighter. You need focus, experience and lots of training. That is what Bruce Lee had the most of at the time. That's what made him great.

While what you say is true about taking what is useful from each style, it takes thorough training and insight to understand what is useful in a style, not just a cursory understanding. Just because you know a TaeKwonDo kick doesn't mean you can kick like a TKD practitioner. That's why it does apply to martial arts. The techniques in martial arts aren't just components of a greater machine that is the style, but a sum of all the principles that form the art.
You're missing it.Look at Bruce's kicks,you can tell that he was heavily influenced by taekwondo,all you have to do is stretch your legs and practice the kicks,that isn't hard,kicking like a TKD practitioner is very easy,I trained in TKD and now in JKD and Muay-Thai,we do the same stretches,the TKD sidekick and other kicks as well,it is easy to be a great kicker.ANd of course there kicks from savate,muay-thai.
Of course taking from each style isn't enough,you have to train and that's what Bruce did and that's what jeet kune do practitioners do,Techniques from each art,training,sparring,that's what JKD is as well strategies and philosophy,all of these combined can make a great fighter.

Well, yeah, that much is obvious. Bruce Lee trained vigourously every day in his life to get where he was, but I was making a generalization, not just talking about Bruce. He was a special case. I was more referring to people who think they can follow in Bruce Lee's footsteps and half-ass it but somehow get good anyway, like a lot of MMA guys.
And not to nitpick, but a kick isn't simply a kick. You of all people should know that. For a good TKD style kick you need a good, solid stance and (unless you train differently) it needs to originate at the knee after the leg has been chambered. That's why they're so fast and powerful.
A kick is simply a kick,I've trained in both and still train in JKD,so how can you tell me,lol.The same stretches that they do in Taekwondo we do in Jeet Kune Do,again you're not paying attention,absorb what is useful from each art,we have their stretching methods,we practice their kicks the same way they do.We also use training methods from savate as well.Power has to do with the hips as well,but mainly the strength of your legs,that's where squats or the horse stance comes in...

in some ways his JKD was also WC but then to other it completely differeant system...
My Sifu always warns of changing it too much...
as a Wing Chunner I'd say he is using the backfist too much,but as a warrior....he's using evrything.
Bruce is a true master and legend much like his own Sifu...
I always wondered though,If Bruce jus stuck to WC what would it be??

@gnicevids The story I heard about the cannabis was that he was using it to relax, it had the seeming effect of slowing down time, he wasn't a stoner, this was something he discovered toward the end of his life when he felt a lot of pressure with regards to time constraints. Got to the point he had no time to train. I also read that the autopsy showed his brain had swollen in size for no apparent reason. Medical science back then couldn't find its ass with both hands.

@5674trackrunner Remember the scene in Game of Death when fighting Kareem Abdul Jabbar where Bruce jumps into a prone position on the floor and uses his legs to lock up Kareems legs, tripping him over? That's floor work. Techniques delivered while lying on the floor. Moves like that tend to be unexpected in a fight. Most unwelcome if you are a tall guy and your opponent does this type of thing. Some martial arts have more emphasis on this than others.

I'd venture to say that there were, and there will be. For a long long time, being a martial artist was a full time career. Martial artists practiced like 5 to 8 hours a day for like 10 years. Today, with modern equipments and with more information readily available, it bounds to happen that a better martial artist will come along.
However, BL will always be remembered as the pioneer, the original master who modernized martial arts, and thus will remain the greatest ;-)

In my youth I trained in Wing Chun and, later, Kickboxing. Training 15 hours a day is physically unhealthy because the body needs rest to heal and recharge.

From what I know and not to disrespect Bruce is that he wasn't fully trained in wing chun so he had to come up with his own martial art made up of many other martial arts systems and westernboxing,so he was not a master but just a intermediate student that was extremely physically fit so he could get away with the pretention of being a great fighter in America where nobody knew shit at that time about real Kung Fu.I do believe he wouldn't last long against a pak hok fighter.

Bruce knew the techniques,and the centerline principle,he knew all that worked,he didn't know all the forms,but forms aren't relevant to combat.And Bruce knew the 5 animals of Kung-Fu,tai-chi,preying mantis and other styles as well,he knew more than WIng CHun before coming to America,so he was a master of Kung-Fu.

And combining other martial art systems is a wise idea,it is better than just knowing 1.He wasn't an intermediate student.Bruce defeated a grandmaster in the Northern style named Wong Jak Mon,so Bruce was a great fighter,sorry to burst your bubble.Bruce combined 26 styles,so he would easily destroy a Pak Hok fighter.Bruce also defeated a blackbelt at Ed PArker's 1967 tournament,so Bruce wasn't pretending to be great,he was great.

While I understand where you're coming from and I completely agree that Bruce Lee was an amazing martial artist, I do have to point out that it was not his knowledge of many different styles that made him so. They say a jack of all trades is the master of none. Just because you know several different ways to fight does not make you a great fighter. You need focus, experience and lots of training. That is what Bruce Lee had the most of at the time. That's what made him great.

Actually it was his knowledge of many different styles.That's a nice saying you mentioned about the jack of all trades,but that doesn't apply to martial arts.The thing was to take what was useful from each style,not to master each style,big difference.By taking different techniques from various styles and combining them does help to make you a great fighter,because you will be skilled in hands,kicks,knees,elbows,and grappling.Taking kicks from taekwondo,hands from wing chun and boxing is genius

While what you say is true about taking what is useful from each style, it takes thorough training and insight to understand what is useful in a style, not just a cursory understanding. Just because you know a TaeKwonDo kick doesn't mean you can kick like a TKD practitioner. That's why it does apply to martial arts. The techniques in martial arts aren't just components of a greater machine that is the style, but a sum of all the principles that form the art.

You're missing it.Look at Bruce's kicks,you can tell that he was heavily influenced by taekwondo,all you have to do is stretch your legs and practice the kicks,that isn't hard,kicking like a TKD practitioner is very easy,I trained in TKD and now in JKD and Muay-Thai,we do the same stretches,the TKD sidekick and other kicks as well,it is easy to be a great kicker.ANd of course there kicks from savate,muay-thai.

And not to nitpick, but a kick isn't simply a kick. You of all people should know that. For a good TKD style kick you need a good, solid stance and (unless you train differently) it needs to originate at the knee after the leg has been chambered. That's why they're so fast and powerful.

A kick is simply a kick,I've trained in both and still train in JKD,so how can you tell me,lol.The same stretches that they do in Taekwondo we do in Jeet Kune Do,again you're not paying attention,absorb what is useful from each art,we have their stretching methods,we practice their kicks the same way they do.We also use training methods from savate as well.Power has to do with the hips as well,but mainly the strength of your legs,that's where squats or the horse stance comes in...

Dude, I am paying attention. I mean, it may seem like second nature to you, but not eve
