  • Awesome!!! Love the string section! You can hear Jeff doing the falsetto harmony in the chorus while Mike de Albuquerque (Bass Player) does the melody. All I've got to say is thank God Kelly Groucutt came along!!! Mike is brutal... In his defense, maybe he had a cold on this night.

  • This was one of John Lennon's Favorite songs.

  • Q BUENA MUSICA COMO EL AÑO EN Q ESTABA NACIENDO 1974 POR JOSE LUIS CELESTINO DESDE ONEKYORK JUNIN PERU

  • I didn't know Mitch Hedberg could play the bass.

  • swell!

  • ELO when they still had an edge to them...still love the later more 'polished' sound, but like this raw stuff a little better

  • This song is incredible. That special feeling of 60's and initial 70's is present.

  • WoW! The string section, the harmonys, and Jeff's wide ranging vocals combine to create pure magic... Only one ELO!

  • Best for me.

  • their very unique style of music was embraced in the U.S. even more than in their beloved England.

  • If my hair grew out, it would look like that, which would be awesome :D Great song

  • skate 2

  • @TomWhitehead2011 lol. Hell yea. Great game. Great song. Why can't there be more bands like this? ELO is amazing.

  • this song us in skate 2. and in skate 2 was were i foud this god creation of a song.

  • Only if Jeff would tour in the us

  • Highly underrated !!!

  • whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • would be hard act to follow this up

  • The seventies and eighties were in my opinion the highlight of Jeff Lynn's (and ELO's) creative genius....I may be biased as I grew up in this era!

  • Awsome. I remember thinking.... "What are these guys thinking"... Jeff was ahead of his time.

  • @wwwTheBookbaggs Not really - Jeff Lynne's vision merely extended what the Beatles had been doing in their last albums - it's backward looking if anything. Not that that's a bad thing - I love ELO up to Discovery. Then Jeff got rid of the strings, and ELO lost their USP, and went into decline. Nice seeing Mike D'Albequerque on bass tho...

  • Jeff has never gotten the accolades for being the guitar master that he was!

  • "hey man lets do it"

  • So which bass player is on this clip then? Didn't like his backing vocals as much so guess that's why he was replaced!? Jeff Lynn sounds great though..

  • @1172adam - The bass player that preceded Kelly Groucott was Mike de Albuquerque. Mike was with ELO from 1972-74 before they got really popular. Wikipedia says Mike left the group "for domestic reasons". I'd guess he had problems on the home front.

  • best thing Jeff did was replace Mike with Kelly. The harmonies of Jeff and Kelly were awesome.

  • Jeff is so cute

  • kelly grousche is bass

  • purple suite. wow.

  • Don't believe anybody saying ELO was unknown in 1974

    They we indeed "known"

Jeff Lynn had a very popular band called "The Move" in Europe that had 4 albums out one of which had gone GOLD by 1974 ELO was headed for stardom

  • I didn't know Mitch Hedberg could play bass.

  • Was he actually starting to sing "It's A Real Submarine" instead of "It's Real Suffering" by this time. Apparently when told him that is what they thought the line was, he started singing it that way.

  • what's the bassist called?

  • @tomoutlane

    Michael deAlberquerque.

  • @thatmuse76 thanks thought it was

  • Who's wearing the tux? God bless.

  • JEFF PUT YOUR GLASSES BACK ON!

  • Mike Edwards played the Cello that was taught to him by Billy Preston in 1972.Jeff Lynne also became a born again bisexual in 1974 and taught alot of Rockers how to play the skin flute as well as blow the meat whistle.

  • @WiccansEatShit hey dunb ass is not there "a no fag shit rule" "everywhere" !!!

except in your mind of course,

please follow the rules, thank you

  • @mreloo Lol dude his account has been gone. Dumb @ss.

  • one question,is the progressive you talk about,(communism) or evolution,(learning) because they are 2 different things, way different opposite ends of the spectrum different

  • ELO was a strange band between Pink Floid and Bee Gees, (sadly more near to Bee Gees), but this song is amazing, if they should follow this way they would be on the best top music... what a pity...

  • @almaciga66 sorry, but bad comparison...Between Bee Gees and Pink Floyd? not a chance...ELO is not progressive at all after their first few albums (Which were all pretty good and sound NOTHING like Pink Floyd) and their stuff after their progressive is vintige Lynne being the hook hero we all love...

  • just really love this song now...........never gave a chance but love when the cello's play that undertone.

  • Wha-the??.... wow.... I don't think I've ever heard ELO sound so.... i dunno.... garage band? Lo-fi.... raw... what am I tryin' to say? I dunno. G'nite

  • The bassist is red hot & tasty .. Mike de A .. my brother !

  • Hugh McDowell on cello?

  • I miss Mike Edwards.....RIP!

  • ROCKIN' Valhala!

  • an amazing accent in jeffs voice there...if u watch the same song from the zoom tour a few years ago...he doesnt have the arrrhhhs any moooore like i be tellin ye bout on ere y'knaw....almost cornish sounding....BUT WICKED STILL.

  • FUCKIN GODS!!!!

  • @willyoustand86 Dont think so....I am that I am is God He doesnt need and others thankyou.......these guys were blessed by Him.great music..........

  • Jeff Lynn ......a master mind....great stuff,,.

  • have you been noticed that the best musics use violin and piano?. They are the masters!

  • I love ELO, but I have to say that violin player's got some serious camel toe goin on and it's puttin me off... ;(

  • This version just KICKS ASS!!!!!!

  • Man, te gekke opname!

    Thanx!

  • im not really into "prog" rock..but this is a good song, probably the only elo song I can give a listen

  • German TV program? The famous Rockpalast?

  • i can see why jeff replaced the bass player with kelly groucutt, the bass player on this video, his voice keeps cracking on the high notes.

  • I keep seeing new ELO vids, and saying "wow, I didn't know that was ELO"!!!! I think there are lots of modern bands getting back to roots and very creative music like ELO

  • wow

  • I think Jeff Lynne has one of the most amazing voices - and I think it "isn't as good" live - but I bet it would blow your mind if you were there... :)

  • I never found that ELO sounds great live. So much better in studio.

  • Top tune.............its one of my faves

  • Top tune.............iys one of my faves

  • Just great !! What a great line up this was !

  • wow i never seen jeff lyne's eyes

  • how cool is it that they are actually using strings?

  • basurr'em !

  • I was born in 2002, but I LOVE ELO!

  • @zoznack Whoa, that's young!

    I was born in '97.

  • I told my friends in mid 70's how good ELO was, they ignored me,til yrs later, they still won't admit I was right but they don't say I was wrong anymore

  • ITS RIGHT

  • Lovely vid of Mike Edwards improvising elsewhere on YouTube. Huge loss, and to go in such an unlucky way. Played ELO II and On the Third Day by way of tribute. RIP Michael.

  • I have loved Jeff Lynne forever

  • Respect to an amazing man who lived for music. We miss you.

  • Deva Pramada (one time member of the Electric Light Orchestra) was killed on the A381 between Harbertonford and Halwell in Devon, on 3 September 2010, when a circular hay bale weighing 600 kilograms (1323 lbs.) rolled down a hillside and collided with the van he was driving. He was 62 years old.

  • And then he started to play, the most beautiful sounds, rising from deep within him. He played for ten or twenty minutes (it is hard to say how long) and then stopped in complete silence, eyes closed and motionless. I will never forget that magical experience I felt very privileged.

  • Sitting alone at home with my friend Deva Pramada. I asked him if he would play something for me on his cello (something personal and from the heart). He sat two meters away from me with his eyes shut, waiting in total silence while he found inside him the music he wanted to play.

  • You would have thought he would be killed by a falling speaker.

  • Such a weird mix of musical sounds that works so well.

  • The cello player in this vid was just killed in a freak farm accident. RIP Mike Edwards.

  • R.I.P Mike Edwards cello supremo

  • ELO versus GHB (Giant Hay Bale)

  • these guys are my favorite, saw them in houston, tx in the 70's.

    hell of concert.

  • I LOVE WATCHING THIS

  • nicely done by the elo i remember. Actual cellos very cool!

  • Big Ern is above the law!

  • One of the truly great bands of their era. Loved listening to them when I was in the army in Europe & stateside. Saw them in concert in late '70's. They kicked ass !!

  • A very clean live version of one of their most uncluttered songs. It hangs up there like an owl, with clear eyes, waiting to swoop. Wonderful. Next best thing they did was Livin' Thing in '76.

  • @kirkwallboy

I think John Lennon said in reaction to this song that if the Beatles were still together they would be making music like this. Funny enough, Jeff sounds like he is singing "It's a real submarine" in this version as well.

  • Excellent presentation!

    ¡Excelente presentación!

  • Wasn't there an audience? what the f* m why wasn't there applause?

  • @digenovafilm .this was filmed in a tv studio for a german tv programme so there was no audience.

  • this band is awsome, they didnt invent it obviously, but putting orchestra with some rock in there is a great idea, kinda the same idea as opera metal, if ppl dont know what im talking about, listen to Nemo by Nightwish, you might just get hooked

  • Hey Man, let's do it... :) Cool!

  • excelente muchachos!!!!!!!

  • What a shame that some people are so worried about their ow sexual preferences they feel they have to come on here and post shite about one of the nicest most talented people on earth. He must really tur you on you creep.

  • I love how the one cello player is all hippied up with the flashy colored suit and long hair, and the other one is clean cut with tuxedo.

  • @phybergod Hugh McDowell in the purple, Mike Edwards (I think) in the tux.

  • Back in the 70's before our gang would rumble in the Bronx we would listen to this song! ;D

  • one of the best vids of this tune!

  • I heard it through the grapevine.

  • @sonen3

Yeah, it is similar to I heard it through the grapevine but anyways this is a wicked song!

  • @JazzKazakhstan ...true, true ;-)

  • Fantastic song!!

  • "ya man, woot."

  • Saw this show in Montreal in 1974...they were not known yet and were the opening act for the Edgar Winter group!(Frankenstein)...-They blew everyone away!-This still sounds great today...it's got that Clavinette funk thing going on!!!

  • Witnessed Out of the Blue tour in Omaha and have photos of the spaceship to prove it-A spectacular event of sound and light.I wish a reunion was possible

  • @recycled909 would love to see some of those photo"s !! I seen the spaceship show in Detroit and Cleveland, Great !!

  • This is real music! Unlike most of the music that is made today, is all done on computers. This kinda music actually takes some talent. This is of epic.... =^^=

  • Is the bass player Lemmy from motorhead? That raspy backing vocal sure sounds like Lemmy to me.

  • @MrIzzydye The bass player is a gentleman by the name of Mike DeAlbuquerque. Quite a talented fellow, I understand - sadly, this was pretty much the height of his fame.

He quit ELO between "Eldorado" and "Face The Music". From 1975-1986, the late Kelly Groucutt (the guy with the mutton-chop-y beard) was ELO's bassist. After that, ELO had no official bass player, using session players.

  • @zehnkatzen Mike De Albuquerque was/is indeed a very talented musician who as I understand stepped away from the ELO because he found the music rather unchallenging. His solo album "We May Be Cattle But We've All Got Names" has to be one of the greatest unplayed records of all time. It features the great guitarist Ollie Halsall performing arguably his two finest ever solos. Beg, steal, sell your children to obtain a copy (c'mon Mike re-release it!). His work with Frank Ricotti is also genius.

  • @MrIzzydye If you like his voice so much. You can feed Mike de Albuquerque into YouTube. There are a couple of tracks from his solo albums.

  • i think that jeff lynne looks like ian anderson without his aviators

  • I fucking love Jeff Lynne. Sweet.

  • Its kind of weird that he puts on such a strong American accent when he sings this...

  • @Caligula138 That's not weird, that's expected. Most of them have no accent when singing. And stutterers don't stutter, either. :p

  • one of rock's true greats!!!!!! One big reason the 70's rocked...what a great time to grow up...the music was awesome!!!!!!!

  • @jlbsr1959 This is excellent. Most of their footage is from after their great string section left and Bevan was gone. If anyone saw them from 74-78 you know what kind of show they had. Lasers and all, awesome...

  • Timeless

  • Great piece of early footage...................just love this! Mik & Phil Bates touring England at the moment, Beatles, Blues and Blue Violin is the act

  • This is real badass... Great !!

  • LMFAO! i heard this a couple mins ago n then i see it in videos being watched now n im like WOA!

  • sounds beter fixed... lol

  • AMAZING!!!!, I love ELO, I love this song. GREAT!!!!

  • Jedyny cudowny i niepowtarzalny...ELO!!!!!!!!!

  • best fucking band. that man has a such a soft voice, but it's so strong at the same time. BEST BAND!

  • somebody in this band should have gone to Specsavers...

  • Greatest band of all time right here, p4p.

  • jeff is from midlands in uk called birmigham

  • stunning. my fave footage of this live. Jeff Lynne's guitar solo in this is so exquisite.

  • Is Jeff Lynne British or American?

  • born in Birmingham , England

  • Shard End, in Birmingham to be precise. He name checks the place a couple of times: in All Over The World from Xanada "...Monte Carlo, Shard End and..." also Birmingham Blues from Out of the Blue.

  • Perfection! Re-discovered this song recently, and it still captures me every time. Instantly recognisable.

  • great song!

  • I was just watching WILD HOGS and was reminded of this song when it played in the background in one scene. This version shows how tight the band was live. I had forgotten that Kelly G. was not the original bassist and it's interesting to see this configuration of the band.

  • but who really gives a fuck about anyones sexuality, guy right fantastic music elo own nuff said

  • Great! I'm going to buy them all myself. I had quite a few on vinyl. A New World Record, Out of the Blue (definately one of their best).

  • bag of rats , you are an asshole and your name fits you good, you wouldnt know rock in roll if it poke you in the *** and all you assholes who have sh** to say about Jeff Lynne why you listening to his bands

  • @chubsoda - The bass guitarist and back-up vocalist here was Mike de Albuquerque. He only lasted a couple of years with ELO. Kelly stayed 9 years with the group. Jeff may not have liked Kelly much, but Kelly was immensely popular with concert audiences -- he really connected, and helped ELO become one of the most popular concert bands of the late 70s.

When I think of the classic ELO, I think of Jeff, Kelly, Bev and Richard. And there's 3 other guys in the background (Melvyn, Mik and Hugh).

  • Wow! This is truly an awesome video. Thanks for posting.

  • I've been an elo fan since 1978, when i was 11, this video is awesome, i esp like'd it when alberqueqe was on Bass, he added a bit of style, thi sgroup is so underated, remember! when the beatles did the anthology documentery it was only Jeff Lynne taht was skilled enough to record the sound as the Beatles, George Martin, it was feared would give it a Sir Paul McCartney sound.

    Also god bless Kelly Groucutt

    Merry Xmas also

  • It seems that alot of these comments about Jeffs sexuality seem to bother a few people on this thread, to the extent of near homophobia, if he is and if it upsets you all, don't watch this video or listen to his music, you stupid fucking cunts, go and take your frustrations out somewhere else. What does it matter about his sexuality, i'm not questioning yours! am I?

  • who cares how many dicks he's sucked? he can suck thirty dicks at once aslong as he writes this amazing music.

  • well said dian, fantastic song and so many band changes but fantastic otherwise, all band members of elo rock!!

  • Yes...people use the anonimity of the internet to say whatever vile, immature, and cruel things to people they do not even know personally. Go away all of you, Let us real fans enjoy the most amazing music of one of the most under rated bands of all time!!

  • You guys will believe anything. Jeff Lynn is NEITHER, he is a sexless FREAK. Just ask all his GIRLFRIENDS, like Rosie Valens. He is queer, that is a fact, but that don't mean he's a homo. Jesus LOVED John, did he not? Wasn't Da Vinci accused and aquitted? Sir Francis Bacon, the father of the scientific method, was also accused of buggery, and was found innocent. They all look the same. Point is, you all suck like the monkey chain on madagascar II. I mean that in the nicest way. Peace.

  • Never mind the guys private life thats his buisnessThis is a peice of pure genius where Orchestra Rock and Pop got together to have a-

Showdown. not only in America and Great Britain but also around the WORLD.

  • so many ppl talk so mutch shit, just enjoy the fkin music and nostagia

  • i agree with jimbo, shut the fuck up, no one gives a shit about your opinion.

  • I was stationed in Alameda when they arrested Jeff Lynne for the famous hot dog incident. Because of this they won't allow him to open the big gay festival. Personally, I wish him and all the other fudgepackers would STFU and get back in the closet.

  • DAMN!!!!! I guess I'm the last person on earth that didn't know that Jeff was gay. OMG....what a waste of a hot guy! I used to dream about running my hands through all that gorgeous curly hair.

  • @passionateaboutmusic You know, Gay can also mean bisexual--and people have been known to jump ship, so I wouldn't give up on him. Besides, he's an incredible talent.

  • hahaha lol...

you just go back to listening to great music... like mc hammer and stuff :D

  • Although it's well known Jeff is gay, I don't think his lifestyle here should matter. The arrest he had a few years ago in San Francisco made him more popular with the gay crowds and might make ELO more popular.

  • @Bag0fRats Absolutely. Who cares what a great talent's sexual orientation is? Does it keep him from writing great music?

  • mouhot, I don't care for that stunt he pulled in Frisco, that was just in bad taste (no pun intended)

I mean he is talented yes, but sticking food up his rectum in public ?

  • no idea he did that--jeez--I tune so much stuff out every day that I end up living a pretty sheltered life. Heck, I pulled my screen name out of an Egyptology text because God only knows I don't know what's going down in the news and current events are a big mystery.--so I'll just play my favorite elo tunes and pretend Jeff didn't do that.

  • mouhot: I wouldn't have known about except I saw it on the news when I was stationed in Alameda for training.

  • Unbelievable - thank you so much for posting this! ELO rule!

  • Absolutely fantastic! "Okay Brian Let's Start Then!"

  • how many bands can recreate a sound like this live. There are almost none. It's a shame that Bev and Jeff can't seem to mend there past problems and give one last shot between all the memebers that made ELO as great as it was. kelly is already gone. Hopefully they will wake up before they are unable to reassemble what is left of ELO.

  • fantastic ;D

  • Brilliant period stuff - these guys were seriously unusual during their time - they had serious depth.

  • A sounds can be music, to the ear of the maker!

    But just noise to us!

  • SHIT! I heard them play Mr. Blue sky, and I thought they were like a super happy-type band, but this song is badass

  • I... kind of take offense to that statement. I don't know what your musical preferences are, but at least respect other musical interpretations. ELO and bands like them are only one aspect of "Real Music". Tell us, what bands, artists, or noise-makers, do not make "real music"?

  • trouble is m8, there are no more bands who do this and are as good, thats why us lot gotta keep real music going ;D
