omg dude! I had no idea there was a reincarnated "eight six" coming soon! I just hope they don't stick an n/a subaru flat 4 in that thing or it won't run any better than the damn imprezas. It's funny how the old ae86 was in the corolla family and now it's a totally different car! I've been dying to buy my 2011 wrx but now that i've heard of this car I don't mind waiting a bit to see how this would do. I'm a initial D fanatic and this is just magic to me right now man. @vboytan lol... Another Initial D fan who likes a hachi roku and thinks they can drift-o... its not an ae86 never will be. this is an entirely different and NEW car. God kids like you make me want to stick to sleepers. its why I sold my WRX.
@divine101 I am an initial D fan! I also do not "think" i can drift I actually took the liberty to learn how to so yes I can (high five?). It's also very apparent that this is a completely different car but it was inspired by the old AE86. It's said by toyota themselves that this is the reincarnation of the old car. LOL go stick to sleeper then, it's kids like us that don't really give a damn what toddlers like you think of us. You're prolly just mad cause you tried drifing and crashed.
@Laitharex Lol the whole reason this car is so big is because of it's backround. Which whether you like it or not it's got something to do with cartoons.
@Laitharex u know every car goes under a certain class right? STI is 4wd street sedan(asuming u mean the sedan, and not the hatch) its purpose is basically making a rallycar or a little more advanced racers.. the BZ-R is a RWD urban/street car for a younger audience, abillities for mass production and cheap production. its compeeting with other RWD cupes, and the STI is a Sports sedan with 4wd. its a totally different genre... so OFC it will not be on the same lvl as the sti :D
@d1gps15 yes ofcourse, but u still have to du a special modifcation that is not standard on the vehicle. keep in mind u can also get 4wd on the BZ-R or GT-86, but then againg u have to do a special mod.
@NitroGadvRules my thoughts exactly. I mean if people do buy these, sti motor swaps are going to be the thing... Or just turbo'ing them based on the specs of the stock flat 4...
@suprakilzz26 yeah, the NA version of the subaru flat 4 isn't impressing anyone, the turbo version are the only ones worth talking about. Really dumb decision on toyota/subaru's part (probably more toyota). And what sucks is because its non turbo Its pretty much guaranteed to not have forged internals which means turboing the stock block is going to be risk if you run much more than low boost. They finally give us a new rwd car and then give it a shitty drivetrain. Sucks.
@NitroGadvRules i agree but i disagree with the toyotas "fault" part since subaru was in charge of all drivetrain stuff. I still love this car tho. Plan on getting one after im out of colelge. Two more years!!!
@runamoktoo Dont trip bro, much love to the 3sgte. I owend a 91' ttops back n the day. Just don't want the older car headaches. I had an 95 gs-t that would sheet on muscle. with the exception of anything supercharged in the mustang family. Camaro's were a joke back in the day, the SS really meant Super Slow even with the baby bottle. But i do hope they give the so called scion/subie halfbreed some raw power. I hate doing fuel systems.
@flyingdutchman916 Funny thing is that it's a new Subaru engine, where as almost all Subaru engines sold in the last 20 years were of the EJ series, this is an FB series engine. I can't imagine parts would bolt up.
A mule is the underlying mechanics of the car only, no body work, and anyone who doesn't think this thing goes well for a car that's gonna cost in the 20s brand new is insane.
All i know is they better bring out the beast in this car. Turbo option, atleast 260HP. I can build from there. Toyota RWD turbo! I would die for one. FULL TRD suspension. My mouth is just watering!!!!! I miss my celica gts. We need a new generation of celica, with forced induction stock!! I will pay 25-30k U.S. for it too!
are you serious? this car has nothing of the AE86. NOT EVEN CLOSE, TOYOTA ! bad bad bad, better luck next time, but i think there will never be a car like the AE86 again. lol.
i'll murder all toyota executives in the united states if they market this car as a scion frs. heed my words along with the MILLIONS who are coming to ur door step.
@aznguy11111 Honestly, I think we should be thankful Toyota is even gonna sell it outside of Japan, let alone build it in the first place.
I would also prefer it badged as a Toyota here and not a Scion, but it's not a deal breaker, and you can always import the stuff you need to convert it to the JDM version.
So so long as there's no difference in performance from the domestic version, they can call it a Hino or Daihatsu for all I care.
@tachikaze222 very true but if I wanted to spend 25 grand on fuel economy I could get 4 doors and 50 miles to the gallon, i know it would handle nice but I believe Toyota is trying to make this like a tuner car
@2bidfilmsguy it is no longer the ej line of engines in this car. It's an all new motor that will supposodly make around 220hp. it will be a oversquare, high reving engine.
@andremichel69 good I would think the performance though would be just under a Honda s2000, but I believe this car is really made for the after market manufacturers
There will be two seperate trims available, one being the base model FT-86 (mid $20k range), and the other being the FT-86 G turbocharged (mid $30k range)
@zyalater300 Sorry mate, there are no statements confirming this. They aim to begin at around $20K, and there are no news of a turbocharged model. Only 2.0 liter flat4 NA so far. Personally, I'd prefer a high powered NA. But that's just me.
I am a Technician for Toyota, and curious for info on this vehicle, I asked our shop foreman if he had heard anything about the project, and he said that he had actually attended a function where not only the release was being planned, but also that there would be more RWD "enthusiast" vehicles coming to both the Toyota and Scion brands within the next few years. I'm now asking myself... what will the Scion be, and could this mean SUPRA??? I can't wait to see!
Thats the Toyobaru that will be sold at your local Subaru dealership and the FT-86 will be sold at your Toyota dealership. We just got our first info on the Toyobaru (still no official name though) and its going to be in line with the WRX.
man I want an ft86 sooo bad, that way I can have an ae86 and an ft86...plus it'd be a lot easier to pick up women in, for sum reason chicks just dont dig rollas......
well, cant even save for ft86 yet, GZE going in this winter
@DeviousPrimate lol of course thats not how its going to look, subaru and toyotas cars often look very simular to the concepts so u wont be disappointed especially with subarus symetrical all wheel drive and a turbo boxster engine! im sure the toyotas performace will be disappointing though unless TRD parts are avalible
so stupid, toyota went to get help from something they could of done better themselvs>>> GAY!!!! well mabee in the early 90's, toyota use to be the shit!!!! but now they decided to crap out and start making hybrids and raceing in nascar... and using japanese companys with german enginiers...??? am i the only one wondering where this frankenstien douchbag creation came from???
I really hope that they added to it to disguise it...Cuz I really want this car when it comes into production, but I want it to look good, if it doesnt I wont get it :(
I'm sure you have no clue that Toyota once upon a time had a boxer engine in it's portfolio, and actually had a an FR boxer engined sports coupe in production.
@IAmSamThatIAM its a concept look so no 1 find out what it realy looks. Have u ever seen tha concept for Impreza WRX back in 2007 ... sh1z look ugly like back 2 tha future.
That put that ugly stuff on the car to disguise it from photographers, it might be ft86 under there but it might not, Toyota is also working on a new version of the corolla bc so many people thought ft86 was ae86 when it's a brother to mr2
No way in the world that is the FT-86. Tail lights look very BMW-ish, sounds more like a 6cyl then a 4cyl, hell it even has positive front camber.
And even if it is the new FT-86 there are going to be some mighty pissed off toyota fans, cause that thing is fugly as, and looks nothing like the concept, not even close.
It's a test mule. Sometimes companies will use older chasis modified with the expected engine of their concept to see how it performs. A good case in point was the "new" NSX's test mule for their V10 engine. It was just an extended S2000 chasis with a 4.5L Honda V10
I can't fucking WAIT for this car! Finally, a return to a proper sports car: small, LIGHTWEIGHT, unencumbered by useless technology, 4 cylinder (horizontally opposed is a bonus), RWD coupe. This is going to be the best mainstream car in a while. Good job toyota (and subaru)! Now lets hope other manufacturers follow your lead.
Actually I believe the story was that Subaru didn't wish to share their AWD tech with Toyota, either that or RWD was cheaper and would put it in the price range that both companies were aiming for.
This will go into production as both a Toyota and a Subaru, RWD 2.0L...The only difference would be slight styling changes on the interior and exterior if anything. All technical specs will be the same between the two twin vehicles.
The chassis didn't look composed at all on that mule. Very dicey on corner entry/exit. I'm sure they'll soon iron that out though and when you see the mule you just know its going to be made - makers generally don't go to those lengths to test a concept.
its the same car its just Subaru partnered with Toyota and is going to bring out a different version of the same car .. the red one everyone sees is the Toyota version and this is the Subaru version
@viziuz64 It's already been comfirmed that it's a Subaru sourced flat-four, with Toyota direct injection heads. Before you ask, the likely answer for why it doesn't sound like a Subaru is the way the exhaust is collected.

I really hope that they added to it to disguise it...Cuz I really want this car when it comes into production, but I want it to look good, if it doesnt I wont get it :(

If they put a flat 4 in the ft 86 i will be sooo let down. flat 4's have no place in a toyota
49Shortvid 1 year ago
@49Shortvid Toyota's have no place messing with flat 4s.
Plisken1986 1 year ago
@Plisken1986
I'm sure you have no clue that Toyota once upon a time had a boxer engine in it's portfolio, and actually had a an FR boxer engined sports coupe in production.

its the new corrado!
pnaiangelness 1 year ago
How fast did it do it on the track, and was it north or south?
HaoKanaka 1 year ago
That put that ugly stuff on the car to disguise it from photographers, it might be ft86 under there but it might not, Toyota is also working on a new version of the corolla bc so many people thought ft86 was ae86 when it's a brother to mr2
patrickryan814 1 year ago
it hella looks like that rear end was slapped on there recently. So much paint discoloration on it. or it might be the clouds. maybe its just me.
StylisticPnoy 1 year ago
No way in the world that is the FT-86. Tail lights look very BMW-ish, sounds more like a 6cyl then a 4cyl, hell it even has positive front camber.
And even if it is the new FT-86 there are going to be some mighty pissed off toyota fans, cause that thing is fugly as, and looks nothing like the concept, not even close.
fkn16v 1 year ago
Although it is only a test mule
fkn16v 1 year ago
@fkn16v
It's a test mule. Sometimes companies will use older chasis modified with the expected engine of their concept to see how it performs. A good case in point was the "new" NSX's test mule for their V10 engine. It was just an extended S2000 chasis with a 4.5L Honda V10
Metalhead852 1 year ago
rear part looks similiar to lancia delta from mid 90's
schaber90 1 year ago 2
Toyabaru?
Imo this is much more uglier then the FT-86 concept.
Is this actually an official car or is it camouflaged atm or built by someone on their own initiative?

I can't fucking WAIT for this car! Finally, a return to a proper sports car: small, LIGHTWEIGHT, unencumbered by useless technology, 4 cylinder (horizontally opposed is a bonus), RWD coupe. This is going to be the best mainstream car in a while. Good job toyota (and subaru)! Now lets hope other manufacturers follow your lead.

Subaru's version might possibly come out with it's Turbo Charged STI engine, 305hp, also has Awd.

@LordFabs I agree to it. No AE86 Convertables then no FT86 Convertables now.

Toyobaruuuuuuu XD
Actually I believe the story was that Subaru didn't wish to share their AWD tech with Toyota, either that or RWD was cheaper and would put it in the price range that both companies were aiming for.
This will go into production as both a Toyota and a Subaru, RWD 2.0L...The only difference would be slight styling changes on the interior and exterior if anything. All technical specs will be the same between the two twin vehicles.
I can't wait to purchase one myself!
OkamiNoYuri 2 years ago
@OkamiNoYuri the story is incorrect, just FYI.
Toyota owns:
-Daihatsu (~51%)
-Fuji Heavy Industries -- Subaru (Toyota owns ~20%. Toyota bought this from GM in late 2005. )
-Isuzu (5.9%, announced 7 Nov. 2006)
-Lexus
-Scion
-Toyota
evilet1111 2 years ago
@OkamiNoYuri Actually, the name kind of tells you why it's rear wheel drive... Go look up AE86 perhaps

BrianTehPirate 2 years ago
The chassis didn't look composed at all on that mule. Very dicey on corner entry/exit. I'm sure they'll soon iron that out though and when you see the mule you just know its going to be made - makers generally don't go to those lengths to test a concept.
As said - start saving.

Which will be quicker between the Toyota and Subaru versions?
mpalm887 2 years ago
its the same car its just Subaru partnered with Toyota and is going to bring out a different version of the same car .. the red one everyone sees is the Toyota version and this is the Subaru version
15minimac15 2 years ago
engine sound´s great and looks very fast , i thing for the long of the hood is 4straight cylinder in vertical with RWD
viziuz64 2 years ago
@viziuz64 It's already been comfirmed that it's a Subaru sourced flat-four, with Toyota direct injection heads. Before you ask, the likely answer for why it doesn't sound like a Subaru is the way the exhaust is collected.
gyneve 2 years ago
So Subaru is going to produce a non-AWD car? Cool.
