what a pathetic mob that England team were, drop catches, little or no encouragement for the bowler whose storming in over after over bowling heat, and no back pad? absolute joke
@metalandcricket Too right. That's how England were. I like Atherton as a batsman and as a journalist but he was a poor captain with bowlers. Every captain since Hussain has been a lot better at handling bowlers. Throw in Ray Illingworth and it's no surprise we were whipped in 1995.
yesdude devon malcolm and donald were the fastest bowlers during those periods....its a pity that they dint have speed guns ..i strongly believe that donald would have bowled much quicker than lee or akhtar
@atuls55 yeah agreed.. They started using speed guns regularly only after 1999 world cup during which he clocked around 90mph...but at that time he was almost towards the end of his career....why did nt they use speed guns in this match considering the fact Perth has got one of the best stadiums..may be one of these deliveries wud have been above 100mph ....
@karrrthik He was also timed on the 98 tour to England. TV didn't always show the speeds though so while he was usually 90-92 mph he might have have bowled quicker balls. I don't remember seeing the speed during his assault on Atherton for instance. There were other fast SA bowlers that rarely ever got timed like Hayward, Ngam and Brett Shultz. Wonder how those 3 compared?
The pitch is not a factor as I believe the speed is calculated from the time it leaves the hand to when it hits the pitch
I was there. SIde-on, it was a blur. Like the spell B Lee bowled to the West Aussies in a state game some time back - broke some part of Jo Angel's body.
Too bad Dev didn't cave Slats' mouth in so he wouldn't further contaminate the cricket with his 'commentary'.
@crazycurry90 It was always the way for England. You'd see so many of Fraser's, Caddick's and Giles' victims padded off men like D. Malcolm, Gough and Flintoff respectively.
I thought you forgot about this request Robbie, good stuff.
This video is prime example of how how piss weak England were during this period. Malcolm is absolutely giving it to Slater, some good short pitched bowling and all that time there was no short leg. And indeed Slater popped one to where short leg would have been. They put a leg gully right near the end, too late.
It is a prime example of a defensive and mentally intimidated team.
i agree to the fact that this is a fast spell but some of the balls that reared up on Slater looks more dangerous because of his bad technique too...he was a overrated opener in my opinion anyway..he had a poor away record..the reason he was little famous is because of his penchant for daring strokes as a opener which was a rarity as an opener during his days..jmho..and devon malcolm the devil bowled all his life half trackers ..
Great thx again. Fastest Slater faced even though he said that consistently it was Akhtar. real quick.this one is in sync (the sound). Any chance you can find Imran Khan in the 81-82 TEST against Australia in Australia. Imran at his best. ?
The reason Devon Malcolm wasn't an excellent bowler is clearly seen in this spell.. pitch it up a further fuller and he'd have got the outside edge by getting batsmen on the front foot.. similar to what Srinath never did.. thats where Mcgrath was great !
@theuglyhairmonster2 He would never have had great statistics, but in a good team he could have been used more as a shock weapon, and in a better fielding team more of the chances that he created would have been taken. What I remember of him is that he could test any batsmen when his rhythm was good. In his autobiography Steve Waugh said that the Aussies were always glad when he wasn't picked.
@theuglyhairmonster2 He did tend to need a fast pitch to be really effective, although he bowled well at times on slow pitches (7 wickets in the match at Adelaide 1994/1995). The Oval was fairly quick then, and was usually a good place for him. But England were a very poor team in the earl, and a poor fielding team, so I think his statistics don't entirely reflect his quality.
Malcolm also bowled very fast against Australia at the Oval in 1993 - he gave Slater a hard time then, hit Taylor a nasty blow on the chest and stunned Paul Reiffel pretty badly. I used to love watching Malcolm bowl - even if he went for a few he was always more interesting than the boring fast medium bowlers England otherwise picked.
This is normal fast medium bowling

No doubt Devon was quick. Had a fucked up radar, but his muscular pace and stamina was as good as any Englishman's I've seen.

poor devon...did he at least get him out in the end?

@crazycurry90 No he didnt! Fraser got him with a nothing ball that Slater poked at and was caught at slip.

@Mladenovski28 : I agree.. but I see too many captains today not attack either.. even in Test matches..
and its even horrible in ODIs.. giving away easy singles.. thank God Warne started playing in the 90's..

@pradeepanisonline Very true.

another thing. even though it is real quick my only thing is that there are not many lifters - the short ones are REAL short. Anyone notice that ?
AIMANALI 11 months ago
@AIMANALI He's getting them to rocket off the pitch. Clearly, Slater is being rushed and they are not really that short as you noticed.
Imrankniazi 10 months ago
@Imrankniazi when a ball pitches not that short and flies of the pitch THAT is rocketing off the pitch. Like thommo was reputed to be best at doing
AIMANALI 10 months ago
@Imrankniazi I mean anyone can pitch it that short and get it to rise up ...not saying the spell is not quick

@jstreete i was only 2 when all of this happened xD i was looking at his record and thinking he wasn't that great lol

seems the only reason he was effective at all was because of the bounce in perth
