Originally it was the Winter Solstice but I don't think anyone really celebrates that anymore. Among the holidays that came along after that we do celebrate are Hanukkah, Quanza, and Christmas. I'm sure there are many more but saying "Happy Holidays" is mutually inclusive to all of them where as "Marry Christmas" excludes everyone else.

Presidents day is a NATIONAL holiday that has nothing to do with religion or when George Washington was born. In fact it use to be that way but all the Presidents were given one holiday so there would be less vacation days.

How does better technology not prove evolution? The laws of evolution require adaption and change. You can't deny that through technology lead to modern medicine which allows us to live longer than our ancestors is not adaption and change. Our society alone in how we do business thanks to these devices is proof of evolution.

@snake2006 - to believe in a God is human nature, evidence that all cultures since time began believed in something greater. The improvement of the computer or cellphone IS NOT a refutation of God. Sorry. Nor is it a support of God. I would say, its the belief in a God, a higher being, a higher purpose for our own lives that has allowed mankind to remain on this earth. If not, then what would it matter if we didn't or hadn't just killed everyone off?

My evidence is in the wonderful acts that people do for eachother everyday. That human life is valued. Shudder at those societies w/o a 'God' and count the bodies(Stalin/Khmer Rouge). My evidence, whether you choose to accept it or not means nothing to me, is my existence, your existence. "He" believes in you.

You have no evidence. What evidence do you have? A book, 1 single book. While I offer physical evidence proving that evolution had to occur and still does.

If your God exists,why can't he take time out of his busy day once a year and say HI. That we are asked to believe in him with no tangible evidence. That he allows people to kill in his name like the events of 9/11. It's absurd to believe that he would allow people to tarnish his name.

@snake2006 "Jesus as a Messiah is no more real than the flying spaghetti monster" Thing is, Jesus was an actual man and we do celebrate his day of birth on this day... mainly due to the influence his philosophy had on the founding of the USofA. Yes, some make it about religion, but the founders followed Jesus's and God's teachings, and Christmas is a federal holiday because of it.

Because it's more inclusive for people who don't give a shit about Christmas, even though it is mostly a secular holiday. Some people just want to enjoy their time off without feeling put off by people telling them which holidays they ought to observe. Hence, "happy holidays" or "enjoy the holiday" are sentiments that are both tactful and sincere.
