@WhoWillisIs yo it's not a commonly known instrument outside of north american folk. i live in montreal and sooooo many people see my banjo and are unsure as to what it is.
And from the back or the rehearsal studio came the echo of slow applause; the band caught the shadowy flourish of a long, black coat and a whispering, low voice saying "well done"...
I like this version; I'm always a fan of female covers. They rarely fail for me. But I'm more of a fan of the original Johnny Cash version, particularly because it sounds more depressive. It truly is a creepy song. I use it for the background of certain demon or reaper characters that I make. I'd love to see a rendition of Johnny's hand reaching out of the ground, then he crawls out, dusts off his hat and whips his duster and puts it all back on while walking off to the person who killed him.
@Balrog420able Why do you call the Johnny Cash version "original"? It was only released in 2010 whereas this version was released in 2006. The original performance was by Claude Ely, released 1951. And this cover is actually much closer to the original than the one by Johnny Cash.
My dad's a johnny cash fan and he had me listen to the cash version and he said with a small smile 'Zoe this is the song that's gonna play at my funeral.' I grinned and new it was true. Now I'm reading Dead until dark and just found out its a TV show on HBO, With this song in it! Ironic? hmm I love both versions. Maybe this version will play at my funeral. Not any time soon I hope. xD
I'm a great fan of Cash's music. Also heard the version of 'Ain't no grave' that he sang. It's more manly I'd say, but then again also very monotone and a bit depressive. Of course that's just my opinion.
Personally, the version of Crooked Still makes me happy to be alive and I can feel the happiness in their music. Everytime I hear it, I'm humming and singing it for hours. I think that's worth a lot.
im southern and there was a group back in the day that there were 4 sisters that traveled with gospel music bluegrass that they belted this song out and people come from all over like it was calling to them from everywhere i remember so many people coming to GOD this song
This is version is as near to the original composition as you can get, it was written as a gospel song sung in many church services. I'm a big Cash fan but Johnny put his own take on all his covers which some don't seem to understand.
While I'm partial to the Johnny Cash version more, this is a nice rendition. Part of what appeals about Johnny's version is that he was singing it with the voice of a very hard-living man in his late life reflecting on his past, turning it from an upbeat song about the Rapture into one of defiance of the inevitable future. He gave a haunting, rough edge to the song that openly declared he'd never go down without a fight: a lasting anthem for people in hard times.
I get your point, but if you are saying that Johnny Cash was not a believer in Jesus Christ and chose this as his last recording for that very reason, you don't know a thing about Johnny Cash!
@free2c - no, I said nothing about him not believing in Christ. I was saying his interpretation of the song was more defiant than celebratory, and that spirit of being unwilling to give up appeals to many. Simple as that.
This is a good version of the song, but the difference between this one and the Johnny Cash version is that I believe JC when he says:"aint no grave can hold my body down".
This is a good version of the song, but the difference between this on and the Johnny Cash version is that I believe JC when he says:"aint no grave can hold my body down".
@Maissikasvi, it can be sung either way. The version that Johnny Cash sang was very powerful and had a hauntingly dark aspect to it. But this woman sings it in a light hearted way because you can interpret the lyrics that way. She is celebrating that she has conquered death. The song can be sung either way based off of your life experiences. Isn't music great!
The Banjo player is awesome, Evanescence should be the lead singer and then just maybe they could hold Johnny Cash's Jock Strap, but only for a minute.
nope this smells a bit. johnny cash made it the legend it is. and teh voice and upbeat stylization just ruins it. its supposed to be a song of triumphant ending....not this
aint hasn't got that gritty... you'll never be rid of me and just try and prove me wrong feeling to it... it's all pretty and nice and just not the same... i mean johnny cash sounds like he means what he sings.... and a "don't fuck with me cause really, aint no grave.... will hold my body down" and with him i believe it... with her i think.... yeah, any grave will hold your body down (my opinion obviously)
@showstopper316 Yeah except that this isn't a Johnny Cash original. This is an OLD song that he did an arrangement of. Have your favorite version but don't sit on someone else's high horse.
The "Johnny fans" need to relax lol (mind you I'm a lifelong J. Cash fan) This original is closer to the original song, it's an upbeat gospel song about the 'rapture'. They're not Johnny's lyrics; they're like most of the songs in his later life where he found songs he loved and put his own arrangement on them. Similar to "One" by U2 and others. To claim to be a Cash fan and then come here sh#ting all over another group basically goes against everything the man did.
@MagicBone Amen brother. The man crossed over to all genres way before it was cool to do so. He loved music and appreciated all types. He took this song, put his spin on it and now it will be linked to him forever. That in no way diminishes any other artist from doing the same. His version of Cheryl Crow's Redemption Day is also a very good rendition from the master.
@JoshGourlay Its like if they wanna hear the Johnny Cash version, then go LISTEN to it. This clearly says it is not the Johnny Cash version, so they don't need to hate on it so much. Personally, I love this one, and the Johnny Cash one, so yeah. Critics need to handle themselves. -_-
Since discovering them in 2005, I have become a fast fan of Crooked Still. Johnny Cash's version not withstanding, this is an outstanding version. Dr. Gregory Liszt is nothing short of magical with his picking style on banjo. You don't have to be a folk or bluegrass aficionado to appreciate the technical expertise of this group.
@718LIGHTUP er yeah no thumbs up for you. Why are you being so aggressive? This is good music (if you'd give it the time of day, or opened your mind you might enjoy it too)
I'm all for another artists take on a good song, but in this case I have to agree with some other posters, this just sounds...wrong. I'll stick with the man in black for this one.
If all you guys are just gonna bash the song, then why are you even listening to this version? You know for sure you like the Johnny Cash version, this version sucks, it's a mockery, blah blah blah. Y'all are stupid for listening to this version if you already knew you liked the Johnny Cash version. Go listen and comment on that one and use your brain. Thanks. XD
Johnny Cash meant for this song to be a dark and full of emotion, NOT a Pop / Bluegrass MIX that sounds as if Sheryl Crow is doing lead vocals! In comparison, it would be like Metallica doing a cover of a Spice Girls song! It's just WRONG!
not in a bad way, but just because you might prefer johnny's version--that doesn't make it better. i for one feel the same way about johnny as i do bob dylan, brilliant writers but their voices make me want to physically hurt myself. hence, intelligent covers of their songs by pretty much anyone else = greatness....
I think that that Johnny Cash's version is better. To be honest, when a band does a cover, it needs to be almost identical to the song they are covering.
this song was NOT originally written/performed by johnny cash. it's probably 100 years old. this is a cover just like johnny cash's was a cover... except this is better and less boring.
This is actually a fantastic cover, with all the same haunting tone as Cash's original. If you think this is upbeat, you're not actually listening. I think it's an amazing tribute.
John was a tired old man reminding himself-and us-that for Christians it really ain't over when it's all over.
Crooked Still --youngsters still in the prime of life and full of energy. I want this version playin' non-stop in the funeral chapel if I don't manage to get myself permanently lost in the woods when my time comes!
Such an awesome song...and I'm not even religious. That doesn't affect how beautiful this song is. And for all you people hatin' on this version and the girl singing, you just wish you could sing like this. Quit hating, bastards.
Johnny would have loved this version, especially the banjo solo/part. Great tone with the acoustic. Don't really care the singer, rather hear Brandie Carlisle or Miranda Lambert sing it.
this is actually how i remember it better in church more upbeat, I sang this song when I was five years old, those raised in pentecostal holiness churches should know this song!!!
I like Cash's version and I like this version mainly because it is SO different from his - always nice to hear different interpretations of the same song. Cash's is very mournful where as this is quite an up-beat sounding version. Nice job IMO
I don't think this version is horrible HOWEVER i do prefer Johnny Cash's version better. There's no need to degrade these artist. Any interpretation or different version of a song takes skill to create. Bravo Crooked Still!
Pretty good, but it comes across a lot differently without Johnny's voice. I think it sounds really good, but it doesn't stir emotion the same way the original does.
I notice so many people complaining about this song not being like Johnny Cash's version. Hate to break it to you, but Johnny Cash didn't write this. This song is about 80 years old. It's an old traditional gospel song, and the original version is actually faster and MORE upbeat than this version. Yes, Cash's version was great, but this version was a lot closer to the spirit of the original.
Agreed. her vocal totally lets it down though, it has no power or soul whatsoever.
Still good though. I think this song would be hard to perform badly. It's been being consistently recorded since the early/mid 50's and I'm pretty certain it pre-dates that in terms of being played. That's a lot of history for one song!
A very good discovery ! I appreciate a lot this beautiful song !
Excellent quality of upload ! Thank you very much for sharing
CONGRATULATIONS

Crooked Still --youngsters still in the prime of life and full of energy. I want this version playin' non-stop in the funeral chapel if I don't manage to get myself permanently lost in the woods when my time comes!

I mean john's version is clearly better but this song gives me a quiver in my little belly :)
petebrady12 9 months ago
Such an awesome song...and I'm not even religious. That doesn't affect how beautiful this song is. And for all you people hatin' on this version and the girl singing, you just wish you could sing like this. Quit hating, bastards.

The music is great, but the vocals ruin it...

The man in Black approves.

The undertakers version is way more badass but still good

I like Cash's version and I like this version mainly because it is SO different from his - always nice to hear different interpretations of the same song. Cash's is very mournful where as this is quite an up-beat sounding version. Nice job IMO

I like it so much ^^ Very good sound, especially the guitar.

I don't think this version is horrible HOWEVER i do prefer Johnny Cash's version better. There's no need to degrade these artist. Any interpretation or different version of a song takes skill to create. Bravo Crooked Still!
DINOLOVER6717 10 months ago
@DINOLOVER6717 Completely agree. I like Johny's style for this a bit better, but this is very good.

Johnny Cash version - AMAZING
this version - nothing but disgrace and shame....
tuddor69 10 months ago
Who is singing this version?
maggieumbra 10 months ago
This is a good song.....but she's taken a song that stirs deep emotion and empathy and turned into a fast paced pop song.....Doesn't do it for me.
BIGBILL999d 10 months ago
where is the picture?
IcEWoLF15 10 months ago
Pretty good, but it comes across a lot differently without Johnny's voice. I think it sounds really good, but it doesn't stir emotion the same way the original does.

I notice so many people complaining about this song not being like Johnny Cash's version. Hate to break it to you, but Johnny Cash didn't write this. This song is about 80 years old. It's an old traditional gospel song, and the original version is actually faster and MORE upbeat than this version. Yes, Cash's version was great, but this version was a lot closer to the spirit of the original.

Whether by biblical choirs, Johnny Cash, TrueBlood (not my to my tastes), or...The Undertaker, this song is awesome, plain and simple.

Has none of the power of Cash's
Great singer, awesome banjo and bass sounds.
The tempo ruins it a bit for me.
But a great version nonetheless
DrStrangefate 10 months ago
@DrStrangefate
Agreed. her vocal totally lets it down though, it has no power or soul whatsoever.
Still good though. I think this song would be hard to perform badly. It's been being consistently recorded since the early/mid 50's and I'm pretty certain it pre-dates that in terms of being played. That's a lot of history for one song!

@JayFlatline
Yeah very true
It's one of those classic pieces such as Ghost Riders in the Sky and Oh, Death.

personally I find this version a little too....upbeat, for the content of the song. which is why I prefer Cash's version.
