7/8 isn't that odd at all. Just take away an 8th note from 4/4... simple as that. Especialy compared to Dream Theater and LTE using 5/16 and 7/16 and such.

if you're referring to the two high drums next to the hi-hat, they aren't toms, they are Latin Percussion (LP) timbalitos. they are very high pitched because they are made of metal and don't have bottom heads on them.
