good job! I have had 4.. well 5 if you count one in a chopper. Certified and with a VW.. the vw was a float... that can stick in a certified engine just as easy. What were you flying? Yes it's always a matter of luck and skill but these people sure are super pilots with the comments it's easy to talk isn't it? anyway as it says in stick and rudder people forget about the power of the intentional ground loop in an emergency to stop. You have lots of stopping power in the rudder or wing
just curious,,,,,did you ever get the the pleats out of the seat of this flying machine? LOL,,,,great job,,,I've logged about 12 serious deadsticks in my 24 years of ultralights/experimentals. Biggest problem, carbs, jets are tiny, and the smallest particles get to the jets and you become a glider!
Cool the way you break out into the German Techno. Should have included the German women doing dirty things with horses. Oh..the flying.....10 out of 10 on the Gay-O-Meter. Shouldn't be farting around with ultra light shit like this. You fly that low and you play with fire.
Let me venture a wild guess: you have no formal flight training, right? Seems to be the case. You got really lucky considering you did a very poor job of managing the flight and you failed at always having a good option in case of engine out.
Please do not confuse the good outcome with anything you did right. Evidently you've invested in some good karma and you just cashed a bunch of it in.
i was listening to bankstown air radio and i heard an ultralight lose its engine, things got pretty serious but it made it down safely, 3 hrs later it was on the news :D
For your information, most FAA cronies I know over 20 years are Republicans, not Democrats. Many Hard Working Pilots I know are Obama Democrats, not Bush Bums like FAA above and you, Lazy Racist Recessionist Redneck.
Yes, any airplane can be slipped, even a 747. I have slipped many multis to land on short fields.
Great video, thanks! Well over the lines and not the smoothest quarry, but you're here to tell the tale. I have killed myself many times in 'simulated' engine outs - quick rational thinking and a bit of luck is all it takes. To those who say 500" over golf courses - you're missing out on a lot of great scenery
This is the main reason I always fly 5000 ft AGL as soon as possible after take off...the altitude is your friend...you get more landing options in case something bad happens.
Gravity is your enemy, altitude is your friend...remember that, pilots!
Good luck with that. I owned several certified airplanes. Three times I was asked if I wanted to sell the engine number plate because it was low time. If you feel the need to spend money to feel good a hooker may be a better investment.
Good narration, but too bad you play music all through the video like many others do. We want to hear the engine and explanation and etc, not some bang bang music. We can buy that kind of cheap music CDs for a dime a dozen any place. Have a good day!
After you crashed dont you have nightmares about hitting those high tension Wires ??, I had seen a lot of videos about motor failure why?Look to me these motor should be very reliable engine as the one of a motorcycle use
(4) Not for you, but is for all the wannabe utube pilots! FAR 103.... does NOT go into detail of "congested area's" that like EVERYTHING written, It can, and ALWAYS will be "interpreted" differantly. that wasnt congested at all- (5) If you fly the area that much... as you say in the video... MAN UPGRADE THAT BABY!! amphibian, some floats and you just made landing ANYWHERE in that area a life saving breeze! Thanks for the video, and I really loved the narration and quality. practice outs!! U MUST
(1) I commend you for immediate pitch control to avoid stalling (2) Everyones differant; I personally would have chosen to line up with and follow that road directly in front of you when engine stopped, Powerlines? River? Trees? Road? Cars? tick, tick, tick! (3) when all fails~ FLY THE PLANE! Great Job!
That didn't even look like a runway. It looked like just a grass field and next to a highway. Is it legal to just take off from say a dirt road or a grass field?
If my engine quits right NOW I always have a place to land.Easy for me to say,I fly in the wide open spaces. If there is no place to land, I don't fly there.
That was intense! really bad terrain for that to happens as well, with all the trees and that.
your lucky that land fill was there cause going by that video, there was nothing else except the water...which is where i would have gone, and therefore totally lost the airframe lol.
excellent control. Way to fly it all the way to the ground. For going into shock you sure did an awesome job! Dont let these FAA volunteer agents get you down you did an excellent job!!
Good job flying after the engine quit, but very poor judgement putting yourself into the situation in the first place. It's not "if", but "WHEN" the engine's gonna quit. If the engine had quit a bit sooner it could have been very ugly.
I fly Ultralights too and I had an engine out, you never know when its going to happen, Boy this video brought back some memories, You did an excellent job, when everything else fails FLY THE PLANE I have that sticker on my instrument panel, hope you didn't get Hurt. Good job Good video and Beautiful scenery.
In my case a spark plug wire separated from the plug and caused the engine out, it was normally very tight, and I never thought it would come loose, I did think of safety wiring it before this happened, but I was afraid it would short out thru the wire, I now have it zip tied so it will never happen again.
No you screwd up. I have 1500 hrs in Blackhack Helicopters. So I know my shit. Regardless. Look to your right about 40 sec before crossing the powerlines.
Man you always have to have an escape route. What do you think you were doing? Im sorry but you are a lucky SOB. Tell Rob Joe says Hi. Hes with that whole free state movement folk. Remember, always have a ditch spot. Like a motorcycle. Keep it real, glad you walked. Bro dont do that again.
Nicely handled engine out!! I'm not sure I'd fly there with so few landing spots, although you always could have dumped it in the water. What motor was it?
I just bought a Sabre with a 340 engine. Are engine failures a common occurrence. Should I really watch where I fly till I get some experience under my belt.
i know someone who actually landed on the high tension wires. the shear power of the voltage caused static to wrap off of his helmet and then the wheel stuck and he spun around the wires. He hung suspended for 2 hours then fell 90 feet.
Im afraid to even say how high we fly army helicopters here in the states. you would probably ground the entire fleet. is 50 feet agl low enough? copilot: no! get lower... haha "NOE IS FOR ME!"
Not for Ultralight. FAR's Part 103=Hazardous ops,Daylight ops, right of way, congested areas, certain airspace, prohibited or restricted areas,NOTAM areas,VFR,Visibility and cloud clearance requirments. No minimum altitude over "regular landscape". Flying over crowds of people and gatherings,I would consider a congested area. No flight at any altitude over a congested area in a part 103 ultralight in the USA.
FAA part 103.15 says No person may operate an ultralight vehical over any congested area of a city, town,or settlement,or over any open air assembly of persons. The definition of congested is Packed with traffic or people, making movement slow and difficult. It dosnt say you cant fly over a city, town or settlement. It says you cant fly over ANY CONGESTED AREA of a city, town or settlement.
No person may operate an ultralight vehicle over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons. From 3:07 to 3:30 in this vid that was violated. FAA says congested is OCCUPIED and has cited based on that in the past. Is this town DESERETED ? I doubt it. If you doubt there is a violation, lets send a link to the NH FAA guy and see what he says ! I know from experience what he will do, been there done that since 1990 with UL's.
usatracy: He was not hurting, endangering or bothering anyone. No FAR's were violated that I could see. Congested does not mean "occupied" look it up. Ive been flying for 18 years commercial, instrument and ultralight. You are wrong. Do you really think its a violation to fly over "any area that is occupied" by people? That just dosnt make sense. I live in a settlement / town(as most of us do) and I fly over it all the time as I take off and land from my property. Are you going to tell on me? lol
You are by no means an expert, the YELLOW on a sectional is LIGHTED AREAS not CONGESTED areas. FAA says congested is ANYWHERE there are people below you. Which FARS ? about half of 103 was violated in this flight, he recklessly endangered the people and property below him as he flew OVER a congested area at an altitude TOO LOW to allow recovery. The fact the his engine DID go out probes had it gone out SOONER he may have killed someone, and he barely clears the PUBLICs tension lines.
videos like this provide ammo to those that would have far 103 reviewed and restricted or eliminated. On behalf of the rest of the UL community we thank you for representing us as devil may care hope I dont land on you flyers.
Wow, lucky all of your violations of FAR 103 did not get you or others on the ground injured or killed. Don't know how smart it is to show off your great flying skills and your total disregard for FAA regs on youtube and sign it with your name too.
I am a private pilot and I'd hope to be as cool and collected as you were during this emergency.
