Not billions, "only" about a hundred million. And this looks nothing at all like a meteor strike. And it's not at all surprising that nobody was injured - NASA has a long and distinguished history of making very expensive explosions, they have a pretty good set of safety perimeters. There's a reason the launch site is on the coast, and all the rockets orbit in the direction of the ocean.
With the amount of prep and time and money that goes in these, you think they would have noticed 17 foot crack in one of the boosters or would have atleast noticed weak points. Alot of money was wasted and could have easily killed some. Good thing no one was in the parking lot.
